    Britt, the song is about temptation, not infidelity. The protagonist is tempted to stray but in the end stays true to his wife by being reminded by his ring. We all have temptations in life. It's how we deal with them that shows our character. He stayed true in the end.

    • @crystalsmith4919
      @crystalsmith4919 Před rokem +17

      Well depending on what you would call infidelity, because in the song it says he was in her arms, kissing her lips, and wanting to be her "loving man"... So at least emotional cheating and if you consider any physical contact with another person cheating then the holding and kissing would count as cheating as well!

We only had about 1,500 acres back then and it was usually wheat, some milo. I enjoyed my time on the tractor, it was peaceful. Anyway, my father died when I was 24 and that kind of ended my farming. My uncle inherited everything and his son took over and they bought so much land and have all the newest and biggest equipment. Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz wrote this song and it always bugged me because the narrator did cheat on his wife in the second verse. However, if you listen to Paul Overstreet’s version the second verse goes “When you placed your hand on mine, I could feel desire. And when I looked into your eyes, I found myself. And I know with just one kiss, we could start a fire. But that fire would just start burning someone else.” I much prefer that and I’m not sure why Randy Travis and his producer changed it. Either way, great reaction, Britt!!

    Woderful! :)
    Randy's first Numer-One-Single, back in '86. :)
    He recorded a great duet with George Jones, called "A few old Country Boys", you should check that one out.
    And if you like Randy Travis, you'll like Keith Whitley... "I'm no stranger to the rain" or "Don't close your eyes". Great stuff! (y)

    The one thing I think is important to remember is that he was tempted, but he is reminded that he has a bigger, commitment and more important commitment to himself into his wife. He’s human so he’s tempted but thank goodness he reminds himself. He has a bigger commitment to himself and his wife.

    “Promises” is a great romantic Randy Travis song. “Too Gone Too Long” is a Randy song that is more upbeat, kind of a Texas two step beat.

    I wish people still felt this way when you fall in love with someone This is what true love is all about Not just the here and now It’s about giving your heart to one person and growing a family I have a very close family and it means so much to me When you give your heart to someone If you don’t love this person like you love your immediate family Your Mother,Father and brother and sister Then it will not last It feels like people have lost the true meaning of love

    Sometimes it seems like he's singing the bass and tenor parts at the same time. So tragic he is no longer able to sing following his stroke. He's unique and gifted.

    The Smothers Brothers show was VERY controversial in the late sixties. They were vocally anti-Vietnam war, and had popular bands and artists who sang anti-war songs like Pete Seeger, who the censors originally wouldn't let play on the show, but they got him back months later to sing Waist Deep in the Big Muddy, with obvious anti-war and anti-President Nixon lyrics. People like Rob Reiner and Steve Martin were writers for the Smothers Brothers, and the show also had a recurring skit called "Share a Little Tea with Goldie", about a cute hippy girl who drinks marijuana-laced tea who always greeted her viewers the same way..."High!" The brothers were fired and their show was cancelled because they bucked the censors and insisted a skit with a mock sermon by comic David Steinberg be included in the show, and when the censors wouldn't allow it, they delivered a show that was several minutes too short. The main joke they didn't allow would pass the censors easily a few years later, and now. E! showed reruns of the CBS show in the 80's.
