- This week, my buddy Chris Macaluso and I set out to determine which species of bait would catch more fish in the South Louisiana marsh -- crawfish or shrimp.
Although the day went very different than we expected, we caught a bunch of tasty fish, and had a blast doing it.
Check out the video for all the details!

Salt Strong (bit.ly/40PercentOffPrawns) - Sport
We recently did a blind taste test with trout, red, sheep's and blue cat. All fried the same. Hands down the blue cat was the favorite then the sheep head.
Yeah, I believe it. These fish are hard to beat.
Nothing better then the old yella cats
Compare it to white perch. I'm sure you'll notice the difference. Blue cats are good eating but it's second to white perch in my opinion.
C Mac is the man!
I fish with bait about once every 3 or 4 years, just to remind myself why I don't fish bait. This video saved me the trouble. I've caught a couple slot reds on bait in the heat of the day at slack tide, but it still isn't worth all the headaches with stingrays and other trash fish. We have a lot of hardhead catfish where I fish, and they love shrimp.
Mutt and Jeff 😆😆😁😁 you two make content that don’t suck. ✌🏼✌🏼Cmac da man.
We fish catfish with the same setup but we use big slip corks and suspend the baits off the bottom and sometimes we start catching them two at a time. It’s a lot of fun when you can go catch 100 to 300 catfish
I was surprised when you threw that nice croaker back.
Yeah, in hindsight, that was kinda stupid.
I bet having the sonar on the front has definitely helped you be more aware of water depth changes huh? I wish I could mount a MFD on my bow. Hesitant because it’s a fiberglass boat
lol I actually use my kids as a remote depth finder. If they quit fishing I put them in the captains seat and tell them “ what the depth?” Then they tell me the number, and everytime it changes haha
I don’t know which one will catch more fish, but I know which one I would eat the most of😂😂😂
Early bird gets the fish! 😂
This video is exactly why I stopped fishing except in the fall. You should try some squid next time you’re using cut bait.
I'm curious about your feeling regarding keeping larger freshwater catfish. I don't keep them often since I'm kayak fishing and save cooler space for saltwater species (sheepshead, my favorite). If it looks like it's all I might catch I will keep them. I've kept them close to 15 pounds and probably get 5+ pounds of meat from one. Big ones taste fine to me, while I would never keep a black drum over 23-24". After the last spillway opening Shell Beach was loaded with massive catfish by the Lake Borgne pilings. I didn't keep those massive ones as the reds were biting also.
My buddy Jeff Bruhl had us keep a 50-pounder once. We cut the excess fat off, and the fish was delicious. I was definitely surprised.
im also a saltwater kayak fisherman...freshwater channel cats and blue cats are the best eating catfish I don't take any saltwater catfish ever... but if I'm having a tough day and get on a good freshwater cat bite, they are coming home.
Why didn't you try live bait to live bait? I mean,, I still think the shrimp would have outperformed the crawfish in the marsh,, but I would have thought you would have used both live!
And what reel were you using on that Okuma rod?
I went to High School with a Chris Macaluso, what high school did Chris Attend ?
Back when i had my crab traps out, I would stay full up with mud cats. By far the best eating cats in th water. I haven't put the traps out in a while and I'm just getting back to fishing around Hopedale and Biloxi marshes. Never really see freshwater cats in these marshes. Are these to salty or are there freshwater cats in some of these canals?
That area may be too salty.

Ya know, I used to think I could sing......!
