Very fun(ny) fact: in the early 2000s a British rock station did a poll open to the public in order to determine who the greatest drummer, greatest guitarist, greatest bassist, and greatest singer was/is. Every single member of Led Zeppelin was voted #1 lmao.

This song is about a legalize pot rally that was held in Hyde Park, London. The title is a reference to the Misty Mountains in Tolkien's work. The musical construction happened while they were jamming and Jimmy found he had the opening to what would become this song; Jonesy helped work up the chords and chorus and they were off!

      @Cosmo-Kramer Před rokem +2

      Just remembered it!
On a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre
      Contemplating a crime
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolor in the rain
      Don't bother asking for explanations
She'll just tell you that she came
In the year of the cat
She doesn't give you time for questions
As she locks up your arm in hers
And you follow 'till your sense of which direction
      Completely disappears
By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls
There's a hidden door she leads you to
These days, she says, I feel my life
Just like a river running through
      The year of the cat
While she looks at you so cooly
And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea
*She comes in incense and patchouli*
So you take her, to find what's waiting inside
      The year of the cat
Well morning comes and you're still with her
And the bus and the tourists are gone
And you've thrown away your choice you've lost your ticket
So you have to stay on
But the drum-beat strains of the night remain
In the rhythm of the newborn day
You know sometime you're bound to leave her
But for now you're going to stay
In the year of the cat
      Year of the cat

Plant's magic voice, Jimmy's amazing guitar work, JPJ on the bass and keys (not this song I know) and he did a lot of the arrangements. Last but not least Bonzo's bombastic drumming, crunching us over the head with his devastating power. Best band ever!

Usually when I produce music it’s just a standard 8 bar hook, 16 bar verse and it just keeps repeating with that format. After doing these reactions I’m learning I do not have to follow that structure on every track I produce. I can just let the music lead me in the right direction and make music with no boundaries. They admired and listened to Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson and other artists. I love their music since the 1970’s . My favorite Led Zepp songs are, Since I’ve been loving you , When the Levy Breaks and Rain Song! I love them for life! The entire group are magnificent musicians and genius song writers!

  • @turnsufficient4971

Robert would say before the song was played live and in interviews: [It's a song about walking through the park in the days of flower power, smoking some weed (hey boy, do you wanna score ? It's about scoring on some weed), then the cops line em all up and bop em on their heads].
It's about the perils of just trying to be yourself with long hair (back in the day), hanging with friends publicly and having a good time - and the cops hassling you.
The Misty Mountains are in The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings books by JRR Tolkein. "So, I'm packing my bags for the Misty Mountains - where the spirits soar -- over the hills, where the spirits fly..." It ends on an escapism theme.
It's a great song. They played it live on their record breaking 1973 US Tour and then revived it again for both Knebworth shows in 1979, in August. There's live pro shot videos of it from 1973 and 1979.

Here for it…love this one from beat 8…..definitely- let’s go Bono…yes!❤️🎼❤️vocally- Robert is using compression, open air,growling….but- it’s always in the right place. This is why Led Zep stands alone.❤️

I remember buying this album back in high school. They just kept getting better each time.
Watching you guys hear these albums reminds me of my first time hearing them as a teen 50 odd years ago.

Bonham's groove, though simple, cannot be replicated by anyone else but him.

Literally true. His left hand on the snare has an American "behind the beat" feel while the rest of his body is playing a more British "on the beat" style. Utterly unique and real bitch to replicate.

Legend has it, Bonzo had huge drumsticks. Cut down from Louisville sluggers, perhaps. Possibly Jackie Robinson 32" s (my favorite bat when I played in high school)

Following you guys all the way through the catalogue - and lovin' it. On the fade out of this song, did you hear that final drum roll from Bonham? Crazy how much great music there is going on as the volume is fading - and I'm talking every fade out track on every album.
It sounds like they just kept on playing for a while - any chance those recordings get unearthed sometime?

I played this as my last song in the morning before coming downstairs to leave for high school. Got me moving for the day. Dad had already left and wasn't there to yell "turn that down". 🙂
