And ending the subscriptions. I think watching news on a daily basis is important. My father after dinner watched it regularly, and it was my time to be with him as a kid. Yes, we all know it's depressing, but to be current on what's going on in the world is important. Again, I was a kid long before social media came along so news was a very essential thing back then, also tv wasn't a 24 hour thing back then like today. Also no reality show garbage like you see on every channel today.

This may seem weird to most people, but I stopped wearing different styles of pants and shoes. I found one style of washable black pants and one style of black slip-on walking shoes that fit and feel comfortable, are reasonably priced and long-lasting. I buy multiple pairs on sale and wear the same style every day, changing only the style/color of tops and accessories. My entire wardrobe fits in one drawer, everything works together and I save a lot of time and money not coordinating outfits or buying items for specific occasions.

I found grocery shopping more frequently helps cut down my overall food waste. I only purchase what I'll eat within approximately three days. The food doesn't have the chance to spoil or get freezer burn, and knowing I'll have less choices forces me to make wiser initial selections at the store.

    • @ArrowHillCottage
      @ArrowHillCottage  Před 10 měsíci

Interesting! I suppose that is the concept with some countries who shop at fresh food markets only. They buy what they need just for that day and make the shopping part of their everyday routine. With two (almost 3) teen boys in our house - our grocery bill is rising all the time it seems!!! ❤️

We stopped buying into the commercialization of Christmas and no longer spend $1500 out of obligation. Our young kids, older kids, and family are given cash to buy what they want, but that's it and it's wayyy less expensive. I didn't lie to them about Santa, so they already knew any stocking gifts were from us, but we've eliminated that, as well.

Good for you! I’ve said before that we only do gift exchange Christmas every other year. Some people really hate that idea and think we are being mean to our kids. I’ve found that when the expectation of gifts is taken off the table, we actually all enjoy each others company so much more! ❤️

We decided we'd save for a camper instead of buying presents. It's a better investment than toys that break or they don't play with them. We love to camp, so they were willing to pull away from the commercialization, as well, because they're excited about our goal. They thought it was a great idea! And they still got a few things from their grandparents they were able to unwrap.
When you think about it, there's always an excuse, I mean holiday, every month to pour money into, to stimualte an economy that doesn't give a crap about us. No, thank you. Hahahahaha!

For me, I couldn't put them back in school after 'Rona. I had such a shift in my perception of who we are as humans and what the traditional schooling was doing to society. No other species sends their offspring away for 8 hours a day, ya know? I know a lot of people don't have a choice because they work outside the home, which again, no other species does that. Hahaha! thanks for sharing such wisdom. What amazed me was that every idea you mentioned, I have also integrated into our lives over the years. although I'm 40-50 years older than you. we seem to be like-minded. Even the way you fold clothes, and the cards - I stopped buying them and began a hobby of making my own unique cards to share. After I retired from teaching, my husband and I decided to simplify our lives further and sold or donated nearly 50 years worth of possessions. We were both collectors of many things so it was a dramatic change when we moved full-time into a 5th wheel RV. We decided to focus on what is really important and pursue the things we love - birding, sharing the gospel, and volunteer work. We also enjoy travel, reading, writing, vegan cooking, jigsaw puzzles- the simple things of life. This small life suits us fine and allows us to have more time to help others. Blessings to you and your family.

I have to say that I have been doing for many years almost everything you have in your list. I am not a minimalist, but I am definitely frugal. I started to cut my own hair when I was a teen and always cut my children's hair. My husband insisted that I cut his hair as well and I did it for 20 years. My son was in college before he ever went to a barber. I do some seasonal decorating but gave up the tree when the kids left home. Just recently I started to store the shirts, shorts, and slacks vertically and have to say I really like it that way. When I grew up my mother used a wringer washer and hung clothes outside. We had to wear the same clothes 2 or 3 days before they went in the wash. The same towels were used for the full week. Even now the clothes I have worn and are not dirty or sweaty are hung on hooks to wear again. I have 3 levels of clothes, good wear, everyday wear, and gardening wear. Good clothes becomes everyday and everyday is relegated to gardening when they get older. Some things get donated, but most of it ends up in a recycle bag of worn out items. This goes for shoes as well as other clothing. My pantry is well stocked so that I don't have to shop that often. I plan my meals around what is in the freezer, in the pantry, or coming in fresh in the garden. Although I only cook for myself now, I make meals to feed 4-6 and freeze dinners that can be heated in the microwave. I never purchase water, soda, and processed food.

That's wonderful! I've been cutting my own hair too for years. I did try to dye it when I was eighteen. I seriously regretted it! I let my hair and scalp heal. Had it professionally done. In the past three years, I've begun caning at home. And making my own salad dressing. Best decision ever! Since I've had 5 glass bottles for a project, I used it all. I def recommend you try caning foods too. It will save you money and time in the long run. If you are not a prepping type of person, it's okay. There are other ways to go frugal. 👍

@@hameley12 Canning is very easy to do. I have been canning food for close to 60 years for myself and helped my mother do it when I was a child. For many years we would go to pick our own peaches, apples, and strawberries when there were local orchards. Making applesauce and apple butter is very easy as is making jam. When I had an abundance of cucumbers last year I tried freezing them. They are perfect for using in smoothies. I dry my own dill, basil, oregano, parsley, mint, and thyme. The basil can be used to make pesto and put in ice cube trays to freeze in small quantities. This year I am allowing the cilantro to go to seed, so that I get coriander. The one thing that I have never done is dye my hair. I am 78 and only now getting salt and pepper gray on top. I don't know if that is from genes, eating right, or not using chemicals on my hair.

Great tips!! You shared some things I haven’t thought of before.
Simplifying medicines, toiletries, makeup, and cleaning products has been huge for me!
    I keep:
Vinegar for mopping, cleaning mirrors and windows, my glasses.
Baking soda for toilet, laundry, and dishwasher.
One bar of soap for everything else including body, face, a little in the mop water, hand cleaning, countertops, etc.
I use regular toothpaste. I started buying the $1 makeup instead of the $50 makeup. I have one lipstick, one eyebrow pencil, one SPF foundation, one bronzer, and that’s it. For hair, hands, body, face moisturizer I use jojoba oil.
For meds I have Tylenol and cough syrup. I got rid of bandaids.
I simplified some clothing (socks) to be more Steve Jobs like, but still have some fun stuff too. I got rid of the clothes and shoes I don’t wear or wore even though I didn’t like wearing. I didn’t buy new so laundry is easier now because there’s less of it.
For dishes I simplified to only Pyrex for storage and only 4 bowl/plates… a bowl that is wider and more plate like. I don’t have bowls and plates I have just one dish that is both… kinda like a spork. I have one pan. I got rid of can openers and only buy cans with peel off lids. It’s one less thing to wash and replace and they always break on me.
I’m in the process of going through pictures and getting rid of pictures where I no longer remember someone’s name.

I don't like receiving cards. I don't like the accumulation of them, but feel guilty about getting rid of them. So it's an ever growing stack of cards that usually just have someone's signature on them, nothing super meaningful. That's why I don't give out cards anymore. William Clark. I gave up on sodas and other sugary drinks years ago, too. A long with meat and any animal-based meals. I started caning foods, making my own iced tea, making my salad dressings, cooking at home, and having only one streaming service subscription. My bf and I have made our own rules. One of them has improved our communication and lessened our stress by 110%. The main rule in the bedroom is no mobile phone or tablets. Respect each other's personal spaces or if we need to hang out with friends. He has guys nights and I have girl's night out. Along with other small rules. Buying secondhand is something I wish I had done more of when younger with a young family.
One thing you might like to add to your list is to not put your kids into too many paid after school activities; they are expensive, kids are tired after school and they can do without it.
Not accepting too many requests on your time or pocket is a good one; I rarely go to anything anymore as I find I go/do to please the other person but I don’t please myself- not doing that anymore.
I don’t accept wedding invitations anymore (except my children) as they are a 10hour bore-a-thon, nor do I go to funerals except very close family.

I love the idea of decorating for the season and not specific holidays (with Christmas being the only one for holiday decor). I quit taking the sample/travel sizes too. I grocery shop every 10-14 days and hope to extend it to 3 weeks soon. I gave my iron and ironing board away years ago. I got rid of all my mismatch dishes and bought a simple white set for 4. On the rare occasions that I have company, I will use paper or plastic wares. I meal plan for two weeks and then only buy what I need for that time period. One thing I do that really helps me is to keep a list of standard household staples - non-people food items only. Everything from kitchen items, vitamins, household cleaners, cat food or litter, shampoo & conditioner, soap, etc.. As I get paid once a month, I check my inventory monthly (or when I realize I am almost out of an item). I can then add those items to my grocery list for my next shopping trip. The list is kept in the Notes section of my phone for easy reference. One other thing I do (because I dislike shopping) is to arrange my shopping list according to the layout of the store. I start with non-food items, then food with frozen stuff last and work my way through the store from the back to the front. It has helped me to get in & out fast. I also go as soon as the store opens in the morning and less people are there.

I used to be addicted to those little hotel bottles and whatnots. Separate meals for family members...realllyyy? Who does that? This is dinner. Eat it or go to your room. People don't call me too often about frivolous things because they already know...Laundry everyday? Doesn't everyone's kids do their own laundry? I hate ironing 6:22 more than any chore. They sell blank cards in bulk and you can personalize them. Subscriptions. Waste of money if you don't use them. It's hard for me to get rid of dupes and stuff I've had since the 80s. Everyone eats off the same dishes here. I always forget to bring my reusable bags into the store. I love old fashioned calendars. I love writing. I got rid of all of my heavy leather bags for lightweight canvas totes. I do whatever I feel like in the morning. Sometimes that's staying in the bed. I do the seadonal decorating too. Never been a fashion, designer, brand label fan. I have 70 pillows on my couch. My husband just doesn't get it. Lists are my salvation. It strange to clean your house and it stays that way. Debt adds stress so we stay out of debt, no house payment, no car payment, etc. We do use our credit card and charge everything, then pay it off at the end of the month to avoid interest but usually get several hundred dollars a year back for using it. Every now and then we go through our household inventory to donate or throw away things we haven't used in a while.

We don't go out to eat at all, only if we go on vacation ( once a year). I buy healthy food, but when it's on sale ( most of it). I singed up for neighborhood Facebook groups, where people get rid of all items ( clothes, food, furniture, toys etc.). I don't buy any seasonal decorations anymore and use any that I have. I almost don't use make up, and have only some beauty items ( mascara, lipstick, blush). For hair rinsing after shampoo, I use apple cider vinegar diluted in water instead of hair conditioner. But this year I’m taking it a step further, and I just use my favorite items (mostly antiques I have collected) and just put a little touch of holiday/season bits on a pretty glass shelf in the bathroom - ‘cause everyone will see them there! I've been cutting my own hair and my husband's for several years, have clothes that do not require ironing (but i keep the iron for formal wears), weekly laundry, have an "eat leftover day" once a week to make sure no leftovers are piling up in the fridge, noting staples/groceries in need of restocking for grocery day reference, takes freebie soaps so i wont have to buy handsoaps 😅 limits eating out, and reuses gift bags when giving gifts.

I cant cut my own hair…it is a wild mess that needs a professional touch.
    1) I don’t buy soda or juice only seltzer water
    2) I only buy plain yogurt and add fruit, granola to sweeten
    3) I avoid buying take out
    4) I don’t buy cosmetics/skin care just to get the gift with purchase bonus buys
    5) I don’t buy trinket type souvenirs when I travel
    6) I limit junk food and processed foods
    7) I limit my fancy coffee runs
    8) I plan my menu based on what is on sale
    9) I mix and match my clothes and accessorize to create my own trends/chic look
    10) I don’t buy things to keep up or impress others
    11) I don’t eat breakfast since doing Intermittent fasting
    12) I make my own cards or send email greetings with personalized digital content
    13) I don’t give gifts to people over 18. I take them out for a nice meal instead.
    14) I refrain from buying things just because it is on sale or because it looks cute/nice
    15) I refrain from buying too much groceries as I have a tendency to want ingredients handy but end up throwing out a lot because I get too busy to cook them
    16) I gave up cable tv
    17) I don’t buy books any more. I borrow ebooks from the library
    18) I don’t buy plain bottled water. I just use Brita and stainless steel Swell bottles
    19) I wear minimal makeup
    20) I gave up contacts and just wear my glasses

I found this beautiful blue stained desk armoire thing at a thrift store and now I use it for my tv and “chest of drawers.” Lol. (I know. Yes. I have a tv in the bedroom but I also love how I can close the doors on it and not see it when it’s not in use lol). Wasn’t hard since I decluttered and all seasons of folded clothes fit in there along with misc items like winter accessories.

Great tip! I’m a fan of a brain dump each month, no iron, and not keeping up with fashion trends. 😊 I fold my clothes vertical, but even more simple for my kids is letting them keep up with their drawers and I help with a seasonal clean out and organize. Not so pretty to look at, but one less thing to keep up with. I keep wanting to tighten up with meal rotation- definitely top of my to-simplify list!

Our list is very similar. Except I use really nice dishes. It’s something I really enjoy. I know sometimes they get broken. Saving some for using in a mosaic. My granddaughter who is eight stayed with me last night. When I went to feed all my fur babies I didn’t have enough of their dishes so I remarked I needed to go to thrift store to get some new ones. She was puzzled and asked why her mom and I always went to buy things at the thrift store. I had to explain that it was good to use something that was already used because it keeps things from going into the landfill so better for the environment plus it saves money.

I like the part about making birthday and holiday cards at home. Also, you can find nice cards at Dollar Tree for $1. Another thing I like to do for Christmas is keep an assortment of boxed Christmas cards that can be used each year. Sometimes, you will find these on clearance or on sale after Christmas. I rarely have to buy more because I always have some assortment to choose from. There are various ways to manufacture cards at home as well and is a nice personal touch. It may even have more meaning when someone sees that someone took the time to craft a card made just for them. A very nice touch.
I hate subscriptions and cancelled streaming services a long time ago because now they are just getting too expensive.
During Covid I bought clippers and starting cutting my hair on my own. I don’t have to pay money for this anymore and I also save time having to go somewhere to get my hair cut.

I actually do almost all these things already (except the hair cutting - oh my! I know I would never be able to cut my own hair with any level of coordination! But I only go about twice a year - so no issues there). The one thing that I am forced to do, because it's a state law, is no more plastic bags from any store. I actually get the 'contraband' from a friend from out of state when he visits. Although I like using reusable bags for shopping, I use those throw away bags more than I realized...like the day before trash day and there is no room in the kitchen bag for anything else; I'll hang a plastic bag up for the last day's trash rather than use a full sized trash bag. I prefer all trash be gone on trash day! :-). Also, when traveling and want to bring boots along, I prefer to put them in plastic bags rather than purchase a bag just for the few times I may need it, maybe once every few years.

    • @ArrowHillCottage

Not giving up paying for haircuts, I have naturally curly hair and it needs to be cut right or it's a mess.
How do you get enough produce to last? I need to go to the store at least weekly for fresh produce, if nothing else.
I use Corelle dishes that I've had for years. With arthritis in my hands I tend to drop things, so unbreakable is best for me.
I rarely use a purse at all. My phone, credit cards in a holder on the back of the phone and I'm good to go normally.
