No matter who you are, it is probably a horrible idea to get your wife a bathroom scale. Cooking scales are fine but bathroom, no.
Unless your wife is a fitness nut, then it's probably not too bad. Better be a freakin' fancy bathroom scale, though. =)
The ONLY reason you should ever buy your wife a bathroom scale is so she can give it to her enemy. That is assuming of coarse that she asked you to buy it.
