Sonic Prime was super Mid though, Knuckles was a lot shorter and actually had endings to episodes instead of just ending abrup.....

If it means anything, not only i love your review, your critics are far better structured than most you can see out there, which is why alot of the discourse surrounding this show, kind of fell apart.
And also, do not worry about how others react to your opinions on Sonic media, the discourse surrounding Sonic media as a whole is never consistent to the point where for better and worse, you can say whatever and it might fit somewhere in the division.
For instance there are people who legit hate Sonic Prime, don't like Ian Flynn despite being the one person people were asking to take role in the games' writing and now they mock him as a Family Guy reference, and so on. Point is, don't worry, just accept the division LOL

So the TL;DR is it's the Sonic GX/Michael Bay Transformers problem: The story focuses on the human sidekicks instead of the ones in the title.

Side note: I'm surprised Yu-Gi-Oh hasn't gotten a live action adaptation given that 90% of the show would be actors standing still while shouting at each other on a green screen set. Cheapest adaptation ever.

As a hardcore Sonic fan, I thought the Knuckles series was...okay. I went in expecting little and got relatively little out of it. If you turn your brain off, it's a fun watch.
That being said, I agree with all your critiques. To add one more: there was *way* too much licensed music. They missed a big opportunity to use the Knuckles' theme from Adventure or any of the other iconic tracks.
My biggest issue is figuring out how this all ties into Sonic 3. I thought it was funny but it feels kind of pointless. Yes, it deals with the aftermath of the first two film but I want to see how it connects to the third Sonic Movie in December.
Small issue with using Knuckles other tracks. It opens up the "Hunnid P" can of worms.
Man can u imagine if they brought in songs like Pumpkin hill and knuckles theme from sonic adventure 2. I will be so sad if Sonic 3 doesn’t have “Live and Learn.”

The fact that this show gave
1. The canon year for when Maria died being 1974 said in a throwaway line near the end of the last episode.
2. IBLIS FROM SONIC 06 being referenced in a rock opera about Knuckles that has everything but Knuckles himself in it for why he's got flame fists
This show had just enough budget to do stupid stuff but not enough to do cool stuff. That's saddening.
In Sonic Adventure 2, Maria dies 50 years before Eggman releases Shadow from Prison Island, so yeah that fits with the movie being released in 2024
I wonder if the pitch for this show was supposed to be for Wade's own original show, but it wouldn't get greenlit until the producers made it a Knuckles show.

Like, if budget was the main concern why not give us some high quality 2D instead of cutting Knuckles out of half of his own show.
My biggest issue with the Sonic movies is that they happen on Earth with a lot of humans. Then Robotnik got sent to the Mushroom zone(Don't remember what it's called in Sonic and Knuckles) and I had hope that Sonic 2 would happen in the Sonic universe, but we all know that went out the window. Disappointing to hear that the Knuckles show is just more of the same.
Finished watching the show last night. Everything after episode 2 felt like a fever dream

I do like Knuckles wields the “Flames of disaster” those flame fists are pretty cool. Also it was nice to see Iblis get referenced.
I never expected the cinematic Sonic universe to use a Sonic 2006 plot element better than the source material. So I can definitely give it props for the fact that when I finally stopped laughing at the dream sequence puppet Iblis, I genuinely found myself loving it.

The Wade show (ft. Knuckles)
When this series was announced, my expectation was that it would be an Indiana Jones style treasure hunt race against Rouge. Upon seeing this show, I realize that while the love and desire to do something like that was probably there, the budget 100% wasn't. Poor bastards could barely afford to prominently feature one Sonic character, 2 was never in the cards

I actually enjoyed it a lot. I love how Wade's character Arc is. He had to come to terms with the fact that his father is a douche. Plus he doesn't need his approval in life. Knuckles needed a home. By helping wade he finds a home and a family to truly defend. Plus a kick ass jam. I really enjoyed it. Yes it's true. He did take a backseat to Wade's character Arc, but maybe next season if there isn't that season will be knuckles focused more.
This comment comes from a guy whose loved the game series his entire life, this show was harmless, but I think a lot of us wished it could be better. I was even fine when I was told this series wouldn’t have any game characters besides Knuckles and Sonic & Tails at the beginning, because I thought we would get an series ABOUT KNUCKLES! A series about Knuckles having character development and learning to accept his life on Earth and let go of some of his toxic Echidna Tribe ideologies. Pachacamac’s ghost was there, he could have been a devil on Knuckles shoulder convincing him to do bad things for the good of his tribe, and knuckles needing to realize that he’s found a family on Earth and he doesn’t need to listen to this stubborn old man who doomed his clan in his thirst for power. He could still be funny, but his character should be interesting and have an actual arc. I had fun, but I probably would never come back to this series.

It was very bizarre. At one point it became Kingpin 2, and then there's that whole thing with the bounty hunter friend.
It feels weird seeing a Nintendo Switch in a Sonic show and I don't 100% know why.

A better ending than Sonic Prime would be nice.
Based on the leaked toonboom storyboards that surfaced in January this year (which turned out to be very real, as they showcase the entire final battle before the first trailer had even dropped), there seems to be quite a bit of cut content from this series. Including, but likely not limited to a much more violent version of the final battle with Knuckles vs The Buyer. And judging by the name of the sequence, the black market arms dealing organisation The Buyer runs was originally going to be called "The Black Arms" (The same name as the aliens who invade in Shadow The Hedgehog 2005, who are VERY closely tied to Shadow's origins in the games).

I just want to say from the bottom of my heart THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! It feels SO VALIDATING to hear someone else share my thoughts and feelings for this series with the same or at least similar thoughts and criticisms about the show because I went in with high hopes and good faith and ended up so sorely disappointed by what we got in the end. Just knowing that I am now alone in this makes me VERY happy!

It's a good thing Howard Moon's actor didn't do the worst aspect of Mighty Boosh in this series.
honestly i think episode 4 was the best episode in this series for the rock opera alone, also it was the only one where i actually laughed at the jokes being told

I think the first 4 episodes are really solid, but even then, there are still some flaws. Wanda is insufferable and while I love the whole rock opera sequence in episode 4, it contradicting how Knuckles father and the rest of the echidnas died irks me (we still don't fully know the details of what happened to them and how Longclaw all my herself killed them all).
Now I grew to really like Wade because of this show and I adore his friendship with Knuckles. So it's all the more weird and infuriating that Knuckles wasn't at Wade's bowling match in person. Then there's the Buyer, who is a really nothing character that didn't get as much focus as he should have. I like how he represents just how far GUN will go to cover their tracks (which is nice foreshadowing to Sonic 3 given how it's adapting SA2) but he needed more screen time.
While this show definitely could have been better, I honestly had more fun with Knuckles then I did with Prime. Prime has cool elements like Shadow, Nine and fantastic animation, but the story was a mess and wasted the concept of the multiverse.
Considering the Buyer was after the Flames of Disaster, I was convinced he was meant to be an unnamed homage to the King of Soleanna in the same way the "Devil" was just Iblis without being named Iblis.

i liked it but i can see why others didnt. i think Knuckles being a mentor is more entertaining than if he was the lead.
not every show/movie needs to be for everyone (which you seem to understand) and thinking they should is what gives us most of the modern dul but watchable stuff
I haven't even seen any of the Sonic movies or this show. I just wanted to hear Scott's voice while he talks about something kinda interesting

I agree. As a longtime Sonic fan who tolerated the Nickelodeon writing of the live action movies, I was so utterly disappointed to see Paramount learn all the wrong lessons here.😔
Now I’m more worried for Sonic 3’s Adventure 2 adaptation than I was before.

Feel like it was made for the parents who are bored shitless by sonic stuff but were mildly entertained by the human characters.
As someone who was never a big sonic fan I'm meh.
This show is like if Sonic and Kingpin had a baby
The Knuckles series falls in that category of enjoyable but 1-time thing. I don't feel like i wasted my time beyond basic "Consume entertainment" and the way they are actually structuring the sonic lore into the live action universe is actually intriguing. But i don't see myself rewatching it unless is with friends or reaction videos.
The idea that Knuckles actually has Iblis' powers in this series is interesting to me and helped me see this universe more as its own thing. And for what is worth, i DID enjoy Knuckles' ancestor (not bothering with the name), i think his character is way better than the game's counterpart.
I feel the reason why the discourse got overblown is because as usual, SonicTubers had to go out of their way to pull the worst tantrum possible, calling it "The worst piece of Sonic media ever", when any Sonic fan can point out to MUCH worse cases. Making everyone just feel like "That's the fanbase being dramatic again", killing off all sense of criticism for this series.
So here's the real question for Sonic fans?
Which is better?
- The Knuckles show as is.
- The Knuckles show but written by Ken Penders.
Given Ken Penders is... well, Ken Penders... I'll take the show as it is.

Yeah this definitely feels like they kinda over stepped on the budget cuz that is big movie quality knuxs played by alba and that can't be cheap for 8 hour-ish of screen time. I mean i still enjoyed it enough like the puppet rock opra was fun and there is heart in the acting.
Fist of Flames moment felt unearned, also why didn't Wade ever call Maddie and Sonic?

The Director of the Sonic Movies did Ep 1 but the rest of the episodes was did by someone else who never worked on Sonic at all.

For me this a great series. Love that knuckles is trying to find his way into the world by going on a side quest, no need for sonic nor tails to be involved, helping a human to find his way into the world, but they do it in a fun way.
Knuckles loves conquest, adventure, etc and he doesn't understand what really happens when humans interact with humans. Like what do they think of bowlers but a pathetic sport, a waste of time, so knuckles understands it as a fighting challenge, to conquer, while understanding other simple things that could potentially seem like to him a waste of time, but it's not.
I like how cheesey and corny this show is. Theme song by scandal is great. Do we just expect to see knuckles, just worry about chaos emeralds, or creatures being enslaved by robotnic? No. The sonic sat. And adventure did that. I've over thought about the series myself and said, screw it, I like this show. If there are more seasons to come, I'm sure they can add in more things like the ghost of knuckles ancestor, or other things as well. It's a great start.

This show was...something. I'm not sorry that I watched it, and I think I get what they were trying to do with some of it, but it was dumb, and your complaint about Knuckles being a non-character is on point.
As for me, I enjoyed most of the show, but thought the finale was weak. Knuckles talking through Wade to his father genuinely made me laugh hysterically. I also took the rock opera sequence to be a possible hint at things to come. The inclusion of Iblis and the Flames Of Disaster might lead to Mephiles and Solaris being used as major villains in the series. That could be really good if done right, especially since Mephiles is arguably one of the best villains in the Sonic franchise. Wade's sister was annoying and forgettable, and it pisses me off that this is what passes for an FBI agent in this world. I'd like to see the police and military display some competence and professionalism, and I think the buyer could be a good villain if he survives and they develop him more. He seems like what I would normally expect Eggman to be like if they didn't use Jim Carey. I also appreciated the concerns of the GUN agent woman, regarding the fact that Sonic and friends have potentially dangerous powers that could be used for great destruction if used recklessly and left unchecked. I also appreciated Wade coming up with plans to stop the villains, even if his first one to rescue Knuckles fell flat on its face. I just wish that characters like him would learn to improvise and adapt in situations like that. Like the fireworks going off could have been a perfect distraction to charge straight in and rescue Knuckles while the GUN agents came to check on what was happening.
The Jewish dinner scene was fucking torture that took SOOOO LONG
This is one of those things where animation would had been the superior alternative.
Weirdly enough, I felt that episode 1 and kinda 2 was/were the weak links. Like, Ice Cap lodge had a genuinely good gag with the imagined rescue scene and the follow-up with the fight using the Power Gloves™, but I feel like that's kinda it. Granted, i just finished binging the show so my memory isnt the greatest, but still. There's some genuinely good bits and scenes in those other 6 episodes. The self proclaimed "low-budget" rock opera was undoubtedly a favorite, but the rest of that episode isnt terrible.
Though given the fact that ive got a high tolerance for trash in my media diet combined with the fact I enjoyed the Team Rocket-alikes, I'm aware im probably in the minority.
I've just a couple of episodes left. I'll complete it, but agree it's a little bit of a slog at times. Fortunately they are short episodes.
As me and my sister said; it's an explanation of how Knuckles gets his hat in this version, and everything else if just some padding.
6/10 - watchable, and hoping for enough success to justify future sonic content.
Like with the movies; I'd have much rathered a more mobius-universe sonic story and skip all the real world human parts.
My only hope is these films/series acts as more of an entry point to get more people interested in the mainline sonic stories rather than becoming the new primary direction for future sonic projects.

Fair assessment I'd say. I don't mind the real world stuff or the humans if it's interesting. I don't need Ice Cap Zone, snowboarding in Siberia was interesting enough.
The modern obsession with "lore" has gotten kind of annoying in recent years. I don't think a series like this needs to constantly pull from the games and delve into the origins of the characters. I just think the story they tell should be fun and interesting.
And I understand that a tv show has a much smaller budget than a movie, but if they're really struggling to insert a CG character into the real world enough for him not to feel like a side character... Maybe dial it back a few episodes, or just make it animated or something.
After wathing the movies and the show, I'm happily gonna watch Sonic 3... At home when it gets out of theater😅

Thanks for the info, I was thinking about watching it but it sounds like I can give it a skip for better things. But between this and Paramount cancelling most of their Star Trek shows I'm starting to think they shouldn't be trusted with nice things.
Personally I compare this show to Muppets Mayhem since both carry the same issue where when the shows focus on the characters we WANT to follow, its great! But when they focus the human characters who are the lead for most casual audiences, that's where it struggles. I personally enjoyed Knuckles, but Muppets Mayhem had WAY better jokes, but I still do get your gripe as I'm a lifelong sonic fan myself. Like the movies, this show caters more to general audiences who don't know or care about the Sonic lore and such (budget aside) and is another example of the divide of whether or not to make this content appealing to fans only, or basic people who are not familiar with the games.
I’m gonna be honest. I liked it, (not as much as sonic movies 1 and 2 obviously) liked some of the human characters, knuckles is a lot of fun and I enjoy what he set out to do, sonics maturing… love it so much. Not that I don’t disagree with the problems it has, because man… like the obvious spending too much on wades family drama and not well… knuckles. Episodes 1,2,3 and 6 are really enjoyable to me, episodes 4 and 5 while I don’t hate them, there are problems. That being said there are issues I have with 2,3 and 6 they could be better but they aren’t as bad to me. Like with marvel we definitely don’t want the same issue as discussed here. Also yeah idk what the budget of this seems was but if it wasn’t too high that would explain some stuff that and also each episode was directed by a different person. This definitely could have been a lot more, I had a fun time for the most part, here’s hoping like before they will listen and they can do better. ❤

The Knuckles series should have been like a special or a 4 ep mini series at best. there are some entertaining stuff in there, but is filled with some much exhausting no-substance fluff to circumvent around the difficulties of bringing Knuckles to the smaller screen. If they want to keep doing these sonic movie spin-offs, make it so see what can you do with the ACTUAL FOCUS OF THE SERIES and do not try to extend it past what its needed and what is affordable.
So it's been a hot minute since the Bulma outfits ranking video. And i just eanna say, i would love to see y'all do one on the other Dragon Ball characters. Now, sure, Bulma might be the one with the most and the others might not have enough for separate videos. To that i say, make a video for every character combined or do them one at a time in separate lists and do it all in one video.

I guess has a Sonic fan I took the series in a more casual sense. When they told us the premise of the series, i fully understood what it was going to be. I know not everyone sees it like this, but the reason i didn't mind seeing these guys instead of the sonic characters is because well... they ARE Sonic characters now. So because of my love for the series, I can give these guys a chance too, just like I did all the other characters. (I'm gonna say something wild) the entire reason everyone hates these guys, but loves maria, is because instead of them being baked into the character's backstory, were seeing all that stull unfold in real time, and everyone sees it as more boring than what were used to. With shadow, were told, how much they cared for each other, and were shown small moments of them with each other, while were watching Sonic's relationship with Tom and Maddie (or i guess in this case Knuckles and Wade) being built in front of us. So i can understand it, i just personally find it perfectly okay. I still find these guys more likable than characters like Elise or Zavok (except for Wade's sister).
When I heard the “Holding out for A Hero” song coming out of Wade’s ridiculous plan, I straight up rolled my eyes in annoyance, since “Holding out for a Hero” is way too cliche’d in Video Game Movies these days.

Its kind of a damned if you do, damned if you dont moment, if they had gone after rhe more interesting backstory then they would have had very little room for adjustments or mistakes before it turned into "you tried to do the interestinf backstory but you messed it up, why couldnt youbleave the backstory we all know alone and give us somwthing new?"
At the very least it's better than Sonic Underground.
I like this show, but if there had to be a worse Live-Action Sonic show, this has to be it.

It was okay, my 8 year old and I watched it and it was entertaining enough. His sister is literally the worst character in anything ever, which is my biggest complaint personally.
Really glad to hear you reinforce my decision after watching the 1st episode. I saw it and felt that the humor and plot of the show weren't gonna be for me (I was already getting that grating feeling by the end of it) and feel satisfied knowing that I won't feel like I'm missing anything for when the 3rd movie comes out.
So neither Sonic, Jim Carrey nor James Marsden made a cameo in this? That's probably a big part of the reason why it sucks.

honestly, its not the worst, but atter seeing it, I can't help but think this whole show was just a "Balls of Fury" sequel reject that got spliced into a sonic project.
I watched episode 1 and lost 80% of interest to otp going with 10% that's left being my love for sonic and the other 10 from my marvel conditioning for keeping up with a cinematic universe.

Facts
Personally, I loved the series, and my main complaint is there could have been just a tiny bit more Knuckles kicking ass (and maybe giving him his hat in a more meaningful way). The rock opera was oozing with Tenacious D energy which is further supported by at least one reference to the greatest band on earth.
