KX500 2 Stroke Supercross with Tyler Bowers - Dirt Bike Magazine

- Tyler Bowers got the itch over the past year to build a Project Kawasaki KX500 2 Stroke to ride and race at Red Bull Straight Rhythm. Unfortunately, Tyler was injured a week before the event and had to sit on the side lines. After he healed up we met at the Pro Circuit test track in Southern California to watch him spin some laps on this very unique build. Enjoy the RAW bliss of a KX500 hitting whoops and the rhythm sections of a Supercross Track. Keep your eyes peeled for the 2nd part to this video featuring an in depth look at what Tyler did to the motorcycle.

So glad there was no music
why wouldn't you want to hear the beautiful sound of the bike instead of the music? nothing better than sound of 2 stroke
I was just about to write that same comment.
@mld what you got ?? A cz 380 ?? What years
I have an '04 in my shed 47 hours from new. I'm 57 and my knees tell me I shouldn't ride it again. Been a few years . My brain tells me I should drag it out and take it for a ride. My wife tells me I should grow up. I've always been told that ....
AMEN
Finallyyyy a current bad ass rider on a 500 !💯💯
Nothing sounds better than a 2 stroke. The man’s bike !!
CR 500 baby
Hearing that 500 through the whoops is magic. Thanks guys for this vid. "Real Men Ride 500s"
You did a great job showcasing the fantastic sound of this bike in the video.
We need a 500 class at Red Bull straight rhythm now.
...and SX. ......and MX!
@Badass Busta Brown I know. Sorry, should have mentioned the AMA Pro circuit.....
@Badass Busta Brown do they have a 500 class at straight rhythm ? I understand he had an itch.
i can imagine it already, red bikes.. red bikes everywhere...
@@NewGamer101 But the green one has more hp :-)
I rode a CR500 everyday for years. Some of the best days of my life!
That was Fricken AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! bring back the 500 two strokes ! Tyler ....that was rad.
nice kx 500. takes me back to glen helen 91 and 92. just like jeff wards kx 500
i still have my 97 honda cr 500. miss the sound of 20 500cc 2strokes leaving the starting line...awesome sound!
Beautifully done Dirtbike Magazine.
Thank you for the positivity !
Ran the same number on my KX500 back in '93. Long live the yellow background #43 open bike!
Awesome vid!
I love the smell of two stroke in the morning it's a shame we don't make 500 anymore.
you gave the people what they wanted. thank you too TB!
Thank you guys for uploading this!! This is the best dirtbike video on youtube. Love what youre all about!
Katoong Katoong....Brrrrr
never a fan of Tyler but I am now love it music to my ears
I walked out to the truck to watch this plugged into the subwoofer and it brought tears to my eyes
i have a 2001 kx500 done 5hrs since brand new, that's styling wow great job to all involved, and to the comment (so glad there was no music) you was listing to the king of pop
The two stroke and a V10 F1 engine are my favorites.
Ahh that 2T smell, hope they were running 927! What a true Kawasaki legend
Awesome video.
We do live in the golden age of 2 strokes right now for more mortal riders though. I have an '18 KTM 300 XC, the counterbalancer is gold - so smooth and the chassis is sharp handling. 2T's still live!
Had a 500 back in the 90s, can't imagine riding it like Bowers does here. On the pipe and hauling ass all the time. What a stud. Also loved no music in the video, all we need is the crisp sound of a perfectly jetted open class monster, running hard.
Seems good to me, I approve 500cc 2stroke goodness...
100%
Thats the best suspended Kx500 ive ever seen
Wow it's so nice to see a modern day pro who actually knows how to kill it on a 2 stroke. They're aren't many today who can.
Brings back memories of Jeff Ward making the big kx500 fly 👏👏👍
Simply AWESOME Dirtbike Magazine and Tyler Bowers! Thank you.
That pro circuit test track looks like one of the most fun tracks to ride a two stroke on.
Love that sound!!! 4-stroke MX bikes, even 450's, at low rpm sound like little trailbikes, or maybe a lawnmower.
Wow that track look like supercross track, how tight corners are. Very impressed and kx500 sounds really good 👍
OMG!!! Hearing it brought back great memories.😀 The good ole days.
Sick Sx Vid! Kawasaki KX500 1990 is iconic & one best 2-stroke machines ever made. AWESOME :)
Thanks for the great video Dirtbike and Tyler there's nothing like the sound of a big bore 2 stroke
This makes me happy
This bike will never die. Very awesome video and track love this 🤘🇨🇦👍🎅🏻
Way to ride a KX 500, awesome sound and great riding👍
OH YEA, OH YEA
Big Green Giant so Cool especially in the whoopties 🏁🏁🏁🏁
F' yeah! All 2 stoke sound and video. Me loves some big bore 2 stroke. Loved my KX500, it was a blast to ride when it wasn't riding me. Great video!
Great! Something that we don't see too often... :)
Awesome! You guys need a bigger track to handle that beast. 2 strokes make motocross great again!
I mean it is glen Helen they have plenty of track
Great bike, thx for the Video
👍👌😀
Great video and riding of the best MX production bike ever made 💚💚🔝🔝
Awesome riding, nice sounding bike, powerful.
Had one of this in the early 90's... Yes! You CAN buy happiness!
Now that's what i call "Man and Machine" awesome, and I like the boots too, it fits
A few surprising things.....the bike went through the whoops so easy!!! Yes, I know this is an attribute to the rider, but then he never hit the gas and cleared that triple!!! Maybe it was because the video sound was synced wrong, but it sure did not seem like it. I grew up in the era when the most important title in our sport was to be 500 cc World Champ!!! That is why you have to give Brad Lackey his props...he was the only American to do it!!!
What an awesome video. So happy to ride a 2 stroke in 2019 Happy New Year!
What kinda 2 stroke do u have
@@tysonthewolfe93 Husqvarna TE 300. Animal...
01 kx 250 splitfire pro circuit replica, happy new year everybody!!!
Awesome video! Thanks
Thats a cute little track for that bike. I use to watch 500s fly across the sky at Little Sahara on the big dune, and climb sand dunes like walking up a flight of stairs, some guys didn't care about the paddle tires they had so much power. No worries on the injury anyone who has owned one understands.
1990 KX 500, the Mother of all Motocross Bikes!
Awesome totally awesome! Cant Imagine how hard it must of been to hold on to that 500 on a supercross track..... I can barely ride my 2004 KX 500 into the garage without my hands vibrating off lol.
I just loved the music in this video!
That bike is insane. Wish I could ride one
Amazing . Beautiful
Awesome video, I felt like I was in the track good camera angles.
Who the hell, after seeing the picture and reading the title clicked on this and gave it a thumbs down??? Bike is awesome...
Some lazy assed 4T rider that thinks he's awesome because the BIKE thrown him 10 feet further than his weak abilities allow. You gotta EARN every foot with a 2T. Braaaap.
Most likely a lib, after all they are the reason for no two strokes.
That's not true at all don't know where you learned that from but ktm,Yamaha, husqvarna,Kawasaki all have 2019 model 2 strokes I'm sure there's more in missing but look then all up if you don't believe me
@@kristianrutman5208 KTM, Yamaha, Husqvarna have twostroke in 2019 yes, but Kawasaki? Did I miss somthing? 🤔
He probably did the whole track in 2nd gear.
threefiddyone you can clearly see he was in neutral the whole time
Mad vid. Sounds absolutely amazing what a weapon. Needs a 450 to race..
A modern Day 500 smoker class in supercross with modern development would be insane this dinosaur is putting around this super track... imagine 40 guys on the pipe clearing ridiculous rhythm sections
He looks huge on that bike!!
Great video !!!!
Awesome video riding that big bore 500 like it's a 250!
In club level racing not many kx 500 about no one had big anuff bulls ride them king of 2 strokes great vid you know how to ride that
*This is the best way to celebrate NY's*
Two stroke, gotta love them still
That's music! Giving the old 500 a clout, skill on the video brilliant absolutely class!!!
I still have my 86 KX 500 last year of the 40 mm carb. IT'S A MONSTER!!!!!
Is it a round slide Mikuni? I've got an '87 which I measured at a mere 38. So rare that even Mikuni can't provide info on it. Think they only made it for the '87 KX500 and sure has some odd/unusual features. An interesting post, and if it's the same carb just 2 mm bigger it would be good to look out for one if I ever port the thing. Wasn't aware they did a 40 mm. Ta v much Kevin Baker.
@@jonniebyford7747 yes
Thanks for the reply. Just to confirm they're the same except for size, one unusual feature is the plate that holds the cable in place inside the slide. Does yours have two tiny brass, bloody fiddly screws? If they're one and the same I'll do like I said and keep an eye out for a second hand one in good condition.
@@jonniebyford7747 been a while since I've had it apart also first year of back disk brake
@@kevinbaker8102 Visually they look similar with silver frames (apart from the plastics and "KX500" printed in block letters on the seat on mine), is that the '87 came with a separate subframe. The suspension set up is obviously completely different. I found the following written about your '86: Second generation (1985-1986).
In 1985, Kawasaki released their first liquid cooled iteration of the KX500. The bike, with its highly praised multi link suspension and newly designed power plant, is considered the first truly competitive 500cc Kawasaki, yet failed to win a National championship.
In 1986 Kawasaki added the KIPS power valve system to the KX500 becoming the first power-valved production 500cc motocross bike. This feature along with improved performance in nearly all areas over the 1985 model allowed the 86 to win the Motocross Action Magazine 500 shootout. This was against the cartridge forked, liquid cooled, more powerful but harder to ride Honda CR500.
We've both got great bikes mate, but sourcing parts for mine is very difficult. My main problem is that I'm living in Mexico, and nobody is prepared (understandably) to send parts here. Think I'm gonna have to wait until I get back to the UK to sort it out properly.....
Beautiful
Awesome!, 2 stoke beast
Pure skill
5 stars Dirt Bike Mag.....5 stars! The engine is the ONLY music we need.....
awesome sound work, with no music ;)
So beautiful
Nice work kid
Very cool video. It would be nice if they could have put more R&D into these things and found a way to make the power even more smooth and more usable.
the kx500 has the smoothest powerband of any 2 stroke i've ever tried
@@allthehandlesweretaken yes it does, but still not anything like a modern 450.
@@mxgryan a modern 450 is only half as fun to ride though, and only faster if you cant ride the 500 properly
Nice representation of first gear
Wicked man
Dope ✊🏾
That was cool. 😎
I think a CR500 might be a slightly better setup for SX, but cant argue with the results the got from Big Green. I have a '96 CR500, '97 KX500 and '83 IT490 converted to YZ spec.
Man I wish Kawi would bring this bike back with modern ergonomics. Except for the obtrusive gas tank I absolutely loved my '97 and miss that power.
watching this just reminds me how tracks used to be so nice to ride, no ruts nice and smooth. Then 4 strokes came about now there are braking bumps everywhere and ruts in dumb places etc.
Riding tracks has never been the same.
Most of the track 1st and 2nd gear😎💪💪
i was gonna say that i liked that there was no music in the video. but then he started the bike!
This is awesome!
I didn't realise until I watched this, but there is not many places for the 500 to stretch its legs on a SX track. (Well this track atleast anyway)
Cooper Web and the rest of the supercross guys own Tyler Bowers.
Finally they get it
Yz WiLL lol! Right on brother!
Thats a badass bike right there, that bike has a body count higher than the baddest serial killer.
Sweet bike!!
Lovely to see , thanks , great motor they had , has he got one in a rmz frame?
Rob Trubiano , ok thanks , my story is I had a 98 kx and 2000 cr , kx faster out of a cnr, but cr was faster into a cnr , my kx taught me to lean a bike though a cnr with both feet on the pegs, wish I had the suspension upgraded back then, the ass end kicked me of a few times , most insane bike I had when I put a paddle tyre on it, high speed was stable , cr wasn’t
I miss my KX500. My back does not miss it.
Bad ass!!!
Incredible bike... When a YZ490 / WR500 project ?
I'd love to see a video of Tyler Bowers on the KX and Tyler Wozney on the CR500 going at it?
500 2 temps quel bruit magnifique !
Gorgeous looking kx500. I wonder who made the graphics for it.
All I know is it's a 1991 KX500. The Best line up of KXs Ever!
@@perryanderson5642 88 to 04 were pretty much the same bike.
damn that thing is sweet!
holy f this guy rips the 500 kx like nobody,s business ,omfg this is paradise
No on /offs t abletops for the big bruiser(s) lol, sweet video.
Raced a modified KX500 up pikes peak in 99....Only seasoned riders can take one for a ride and not come back shivering and weak in the knees....
cool video...can I buy the soundtrack?
If the tracks were this buttery back in the 80s and early 90’s, we would have witnessed epic 500cc 2 stroke supercross. Too bad it was chopped up, sand trap mayhem
