    Glad to help out. I will make a video of the lift cylinder soon. Yep I had to remove all three gear clusters as all had broken teeth. It was very easy once I got the nerve to remove the first one. LOL. My best advice is to have two parts cans. Keep one on each side to remember where bolts go. Great trick. Please forgive me if I call something by another name. I just do the best I can. Please feel free to ask any questions as I will be glad to help out.

    I just repaired the 2nd gear in a 8n. And I guess I should have got a book on it first. It is a simple thing to replace the gears but I DID NOT KNOW how much gear oil there was it one.. There is about 8.5 gallons! And when you have a 5 gallon pan to drain it in you make a hell of a mess while you are trying to get the plug back in LOL.

    You're right; very little on YT for this sort of thing. I have a 1963 Ford 4000 Select-O-Speed that I am restoring, and I cannot find much on YT for it. I am winging it, using YT, Ford Shop Manuals, and good ol' hillbilly farmboy know-how (spent 40 years in heavy industrial maintenance, so common sense is the best tool in the box). At this time, I need to replace the transmission input shaft before I can continue. Thanks for the video and taking time to make it.

I recently purchased A 8n and am planning on an exstensive restoration so I can use the tractor for gardening and general use. Thank you very much for sharing your interest with us 8n amatures so we can have A better understanding of the systems on this tractor. Sincerly, Shawn Daniel

    Yes you can. Just a piston under the plate. Order the rings for it at Allstateagparts. I think they are about $10. Remove the rings buff the inside with some 000 steel wool. Replace. Also Order a new gasket for the plate. Clean that very good. All Hydro pressure runs through that. Good luck.

    This is the only video I’ve found with a complete breakdown on an 8n. I appreciate you uploading this video for everyone. I have fluid leaking from the front cotter key and need to replace the seal. Do you think the front input shaft seal is all I need to replace or is there another seal inside the transmission that should be replaced as well? Idk where that seal is or how it’s done but am going to split the tractor soon and all information I can get would help a lot.

  • @swhesq
    @swhesq  Před 11 lety

    No problem. remove the round side plate where your PTO lever is. Look in at your pump. On the very back at the bottom its a pressure relief valve looks like a sparkplug. Order one from Allstateagparts. $20 I think. That should do it. Very easy. Good luck

    great video. it's nice to have a reference for those of us about to tackle the same. For a great resource on how-tos and manuals/photos/etc, see ntractorclub too. There's a great repair manual in there for the hydraulic lift.
    Looking forward to your lift video.
    Thanks.

  • @swhesq
    @swhesq  Před 11 lety

    Michale. Do not use 90 Wieght. Your tractor used standard Hydroilc fluid in all three chambers. Transmission ,Gearbox andHydrolic lift. Should be one common filler cap. You can pick up a 5gal container at Trcator Supply , Atwoods or and Farm and garden. Just make sure its non foaming. Good luck my friend.

  • @swhesq
    @swhesq  Před 11 lety

    Sounds very simple . If you take the top plate off where the shifter is just raise it up off the tractor. Look at the shifting fork that it attaches to. I bet its just bent a little, Just bend it back stright you should be fine. Your just over meshing the gears. Nothing bad wrong at all I dont think. Good luuck

  • @allen6634

    as i watched your vidio i noticed that you said that the tractor used gear oil and it will lube the whole tractor .i would like to say that the tractor has 3 points to drain , witch this tells me that there is 3 differant oils and ofcorse please don't ever us ear oil on lift hyd. if you have any doubt about my advice. try replacing the power steering fluid with gear oil in your truck

    Hey there, great video. My 1952 8n is leaking hydraulic fluid where the transmission and engine come together. I assume that means the seal where the spline comes out of the transmission is bad. In order to replace that seal do I have to disassemble the transmission or simply split the tractor and replace the seal from the front?

    Hi their, very good video, I have a 1951 ford 8n tractor gasoline 4 cylinder flat head. I bought the tractor from my neighbor, runs and drives good. My concern is that when I raise the hydraulic up along with my box scrapper it goes up, but then when I drive the tractor it goes back down, it does not stay up. Is that the hydraulic cylinder piston under neath the seat that's bad? also if it is can I also replace the control valves by taking the lift plate off only? thank you.

    Has your 8N ever started knocking? About a month ago mine started to knock as the rear tire makes a full turn. So it sounds more like transmission rather than engine knock. I just don't have enough understanding of what might cause the knock as the axle or rear end makes the full revolution. Oh. I was using the right and left tire break hard when this knock began.

    I ust to (40 yrs ago) use a broom handle to line up clutches on cars by whitling around the front of handle so it centers into the little hole in flywheel and so the handle fits snugly through the clutch plate straight out then tightening down the pressure plate with it lined up. Been so long. a little fuzzy on detail, but I never had a problem with inserting transmission front shaft through the clutch. If someone don't have an alignment tool they may try this method. Maybe check with Swhesq first. Now I was thinking of buying an 8n that has a second gear issue. How hard and expensive would it be to replace the second gear if I did it myself?

    My husband has a 1948 8N Ford Tractor. Gears are jammed and clutch won't disengage and therefore won't start. Is there any way to get this problem fixed without splitting tractor in two? Tractor was running fine til he put it into first gear, then reverse and that killed the tractor. He is frustrated, and I am not any help!! So hopefully, you might have an answer for us! Thanks so much! God Bless!

Last week it started a slight grind only in a forward gear. Could it be a pin that holds the shifter in place has wiggled out and fell into the bottom effecting only forward movement? Please help. Thank You

      Donald.Take you shifter cover off. About 8 bolts. Lift it stright up. Nothing is going to fly off or out. You have a set screw that has come loose. Tighten or replace. Put you plate back on then your in business. Hope this helps. Good luck my friend.

I tightened it up, removed all travel, the gave it another 1/4 turn to make sure it was fully engaging, still nothing. I tried pulling the tractor around, I tried using the tractor to pull my truck around. I tried driving it in circles, I tried attaching the plow and pulling it through as deep as it would go so the tractor would "chug". Still, I get nothing. I'd prefer not to split the tractor, as I have no shop to work in.

  • @swhesq
    @swhesq  Před 11 lety

    Sure. First remove the round side plate that your PTO lever is on. No worries the lever is attached to the plate. You will need to have a drain pan under that. LOT OF FLUID. Get a light look in there you will see an actuator rod . Unhook that. Go topside. Remove every bolt that holds your top plat on. That the seats bolted to. Lift off, Flip over . 4 Bolts hold on your Lift cylinder. Order new rings and gasket, Good luck my friend. Its that simple
