I’m pretty sure u can wash AirPods in distilled water. It’s the minerals in water than mess up the metal and everything in the AirPod. So, just don’t use tap water or purified water

I once didn't clean my bluetooth headphones for over a year and they got nastier than those airpods and the sound randomly got super quiet at one point, I cleaned them and it is much better than before.
