Stam Fine looks at Steven Spielberg’s 1981 classic Raiders of the Lost Ark, starring Harrison Ford as the archeologist adventurer Indiana Jones. Indy is on a quest to find the Lost Ark of the Covenant, and along the way hooks up with an old girlfriend in a globetrotting adventure spanning several continents.
An Ode to theatrical action-adventure series, Raiders, and its sequels pits its almost indestructible hero against Nazis, cut throats, and Indy's own search for knowledge/glory.

Hands down the best film of my childhood. I had a VHS copy, taped of tv, that I watched to death. I literally watched the tape so many times I wore it out.
I remember seeing this movie as a 'sneak preview', about a week before it officially opened up nationwide. It followed a forgotten movie-'The Sea Wolves'-and I was lucky enough to see Raiders twice that evening as the theater management decided to show it again a second time! It was, and always will be, a 'nearly perfect movie' to me.

My favorite movie. I was born in 1967 and count myself lucky that I grew up during one of Hollywood's greatest periods. Movies being made by people who grew up loving movies. It played all summer at a theater within walking distance from my house. I saw it 5 times during its original release. It has great characters, dialogue, action, etc. There's something to a hero who fails that much, but doesn't give up. Even as a kid, I loved Marion. She was tough and smart, but like Indy, wasn't perfect of invulnerable. Toht is one of the creepiest villains ever and it's really satisfying to see him go out screaming like a bitch as his face melts off.
I can't remember how the analysis went or how it worked but it's online and well documented with facts but Indiana Jones in Raiders is one of those rare films were the hero doesn't change or alter anything and everything that happened in the film would have happened weather he was there or not

Marion was not a "child" - at least not in the chronological sense!
Though "Indy 3 / 1989" is my personal fave, this is arguably the best entry.
Captain America, although 'loosely' based on the comics, also debuted in Republic Pictures serials in 1944. Done in black and white, as most were, it was a first tie-in deal done by Marvel, then known as Timely Comics. It is the first appearance of a Marvel character onscreen. And it would the last live action appearance until Spider-Man tuned up on the PBS children's educational program The Electric Company segments in 1974.
The rest is phenomenal film and media history.
Thank God you've done a video on Raiders, its one of my favourite films too. Loved the 'Rumours' joke. I would have you might have got some comic mileage out of the submarine controversy, though. Still, cannot complain. Excellent video, very funny.

It's worth remembering that Jones isn't exactly a hero. He's a fairly cold man who only sees his 'prize' and gradually has to learn to value people more than archeological treasure. In each of the first three films, that's his character arc. He's a throwback to a Bogart type of leading man. Whether Selleck would have fit that coldness, I don't know.
Interesting comment. I suppose it depends on how you define a, “hero,” really? We get so many words like this in English from the Greek, washed through Latin. The protagonist of a story with whom we’re meant to sympathise does not have to be one with whom we empathise, though. Most, “heroes,” in most stories are people with a flaw (usually resolved by the story ark by the end of the tale) with whom we can only partially identify. Indeed, they have many characteristics we find abhorrent or distasteful, but we back them anyway, because they’re not the villains and because the focus is on them. But, when we look at the original heroes of Greek myth, it’s a bit of a challenge to find anyone with whom you can empathise, or with whom their original audiences could empathise, despite us all being able to sympathise with their subsequent plight. Look at Oedipus Rex? Odysseus? Or later, Latin creations like Aeneas? These are not clubable types, but meant to be embodiments of a way of thinking, feeling and most importantly, “believing.”
I say all that, but I agree completely with you. Jones is far less likeable than we are (I think) meant to accept at face value. And much harder to identify with than even most superheroes of the current zeitgeist. Obsessive and rather selfish, murderous in that obsession and ruthless to all around him, he does soften toward the end of the first movie, apparently finding love and seeking forgiveness for dumping his (probably under age?) girlfriend. But, as subsequent movies show, that didn’t last long either . . .
But, as an, “archetype,” he works very effectively. Unusual for modern audiences to take to an archetype, unless they would wish they could be like them, like James Bond, Tony Stark, etc. That’s his appeal, I think. What teenager wouldn’t want to have his kind of adventures? Travel the world, see exotic things, be the smartest guy in the room (or temple?) and kill a bunch of Nazis with impunity. And do it all in time to get home for a good shag with the leading lady! What’s not to love?
Indy's mercenary streak is very obvious in The Temple of Doom...Fortune and Glory, Kid...Fortune and Glory.
@@ashroskell Great comment. Jones does fit the 1960's Bond 'hero' more than the traditional Hollywood hero. I still think that final scene in 'Raiders' with Marion (a last minute addition after Marcia Lucas pointed out at an early rough cut screening that Marion simply disappeared from the story - that's not Denholm Elliot at the top of the stairs) shows Jones still not exactly focused on her and more caught up in the fate of the Ark.
Selleck played a character not unlike Indy in 'High Road To China' (1983). He doesn't quite have the slightly nasty edge that peak Ford had, though, so his Indy would certainly have been different...

Raiders of the Lost Ark is the Bestest, Bestest movie ever made. It's got everything. Some Biffo & Kissy Kissy and of course face melting. What more could you ask for in a movie.
I wish they would make movie's like this now. Where the adventure and entertaining come first not political messages. Also practical effects are so much better than cgi.

I still remember sitting in the theater in the summer of 1981 with my parents and sister when Indy blows away that sword wielding thug. The audience roared with laughter!
I've loved all 3 of the Indiana Jones movies since I first saw them as a kid. I probably put quite a bit of wear on those VHS tapes, but mostly on my favorite of the trilogy, The Last Crusade.

The Nazi sub base was a Real WW2 sub base! The Sub was from Wolfgang's Das Boot! And the blow-up the Ark scene was Tattooine!! Masterpiece movie.

Han and Indy parallel each other. Han's claim, "I've flown from one end of this galaxy to the other and seen a lot of strange stuff but nothing to make me believe there's an all-powerful "force" controlling everything." I beg to differ. Ark of the Covenant. Voodoo magic....holy grail......crystal skulls and dials of destiny. If that ain't "strange stuff" I don't know what is.
I still want a series of Indy's granddaughter breaking into museums or the collections of eccentric billionaires to return all the shit Indy stole to the rightful heirs. (It was someone else's idea, I just like it.)

Harrison Ford demonstrates his characters can straight out murder people and get away with it just by charm. Not only get away with murder, but audiences actually laughing as he does it. I almost want to see every Harrison Ford murder put to a laugh track. Oh my, what have I become???

My favourite quote about the film is that it is completely pointless. If Jones hadn't gone on the mission the Nazis would have still found and opened the ark with the same result.
Interesting that you skipped over how much of this film is taken from other sources (as were later ones). I'm not talking about homages to stunt scenes in Republic serials, though there are several (the flying wing fight is an homage to one in Spy Smasher, the truck chase is an homage to Zorro's Fighting Legion and Stagecoach{same stunt and stuntman, Yakima Canutt}), but outright swipes. The rolling stone deathtrap was taken from the Uncle Scrooge comic book adventure, "The Seven Cities of Cibola," from Uncle Scrooge #7. Much of the plot, of a search for lost treasure is taken from multiple pulp novels and adventure stories, with Indy's iconic look taken from Treasure of the Sierra Madre, to many shots, especially the map room sequence, copied rather blatantly from the Charlton Heston film, Secret of the Incas.
they've never really made any secret about how much they were inspired by specific serials.

It would have been more believable if Belloq had just handed the Ark over to Indy, without a fight, like the French are famous for.
The greatest action adventure movie of all time. Followed by lesser sequels. Much lesser. MOONRAKER , OCTOPUSSY, and Lazenby’s STONER is better than any Jones sequel. But, wow, that RAIDERS is one of a kind.

I don't like the title "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark". He's one of the Raiders, it's the whole point. If it was a matter of retitling the movie so it would fit the rest of the franchise they could have done: Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark. People would still just call it Raiders of the Lost Ark but at least there would be no hint of any revisionism that looms so large in both Lucas' and Spielberg's filmography.

They just couldn't get a young and upcoming actor to take over the role. They just kept getting chewed up by the Hollywood lifestyle. Hope it goes Bond like in future casting. Anyone can play the role and you don't mind.
