The mountain area ist located in the middle of the north of Spain not far from the coast. So you could hike the spektakular mountains in the morning and go to the beach in the afternoon. And at PICOS DE EUROPA we discoverd the most turquoise river we have ever seen.
But the north of Spain offers more than that.
In this episode our road trip takes us from Bilbao along the north coast of Spain further west where we then head to Portugal. We explore charming places, secluded beaches and discover the spectacular Picos de Europa mountains.
We visit the lively pilgrimage town of Santiago de Compostela and of course we also enjoy the Spanish way of life...
Our road trip through Spain is just plain fun. There is so much to explore.
The small town of Castro Urdiales is totally relaxed and charming and the very pretty medieval church, towers over the town.
CASTRO URDIALES is a town that is easy just to stroll through and to discover.
At the city beach we meet a nice Spanish family. And they spontaneously invite us home for dinner, just like that.

At the PICOS DE EUROPA mountains we discover a beautiful river. The color is just amazing. We have never seen such a crystal clear turquoise river. Stunningly beautiful.
We hike the RUTA DEL CARES along the river. The mountain scenery is simply spectacular. No wonder the Ruta del Cares is one of the famoust hikes in Spain.
It feels like we are hiking high alpine but technically the route is not difficult. We discover abandoned houses. A lost place in the middle of the mountains....
And the mountain goats are used to hikers to the delight of our son ......
Picos de Europa is an absolute highlight of our Northern Spain trip and a must see for every mountain lover.
We have heard a lot about the pilgrimage city SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA and on the way through France and Spain we have seen many pilgrims walking the Way of St. James from all over Europe to Santiago de Compostela.
The closer we get to the cathedral, the more crowded the streets become...
On the large square in front of the cathedral there is a very special atmosphere, the pilgrims are exhausted but happy!
Our next stop is the Galician border town of VIGO. Very lively and yet totally relaxed. The Spaniards love to enjoy life and the spanish way of life is totally captivating.
Before we continue south we stop at the Supercharger Vigo.
The north of spain is simply beautiful. the south of Spain and other areas are still on our plan.
In the next episode we head to Portugal, discover the beautiful coasts of Portugal and try the famous Pastel de Nata.
