    I'm kind of sorry you didn't get to experience The Shadow of the Wind properly, it's one of my favourite books. I read it in Portuguese and the translation is very well done from the Spanish. I love that book, the writing is beautiful and the story itself is super gripping (the book on its own is like a love story to books, so there's that too!). • @keatsiannightingale
      @keatsiannightingale Před 3 lety

      @@travisminger9529 Well, it could be a good way to get the author's writing in the original form, without any translation interference (when the translation is poor, it does interfere with the reading, unfortunately - I'm a translator myself, so I'm not just cursing out of nothing xD), but I would suggest maybe starting with a shorter book? Zafon's Marina is also a very good book, and much shorter, and it could be a good way to practise the language and see if it's manageable to read a bigger, more "complex" book for pleasure.

    Maybe some of your subscribers might want to read your copies with the annotations? I haven't seen if you've done a review on those, and they aren't really my type of book, but there might be someone out there who would *enjoy* reading a copy with annotations by a critical eye. I like that you donate books to the library - I don't think my local library takes donations, but I've given some of my academic books to my college library in the past, which they seemed to be rather happy to get. I figure most people don't know that some libraries accept donations, and as libraries in a lot of countries have had their budgets cut, it's doing a good turn that will benefit a lot of people.
    (Donating books to charity shops is also a good thing to do with books you don't want any more)

    I recently read (by that I mean fall 2019) Everybody Sees the Ants and yeah the issues are very glaring reading it now. An issue I have with A.S. King's books (despite loving her books) is that they are always products of their time and even if that time is 2012 it's a bit jarring. If you want to read her newer stuff, Still Life with Tornado is one I would think you would like but tw for abuse and a student teacher relationship (it's condemned and in the background but still). Her middlegrade also stands out. The Year We Fell From Space is particularly heavy for a middlegrade.
    It's centered around mental health and increasing awareness due to a personal tragedy she suffered.
    My personal favorite is Dig but that book is genuinely surrealist so your mileage may vary

    I read Shadow of the Wind in English in November last year and I listened to the audiobook in German alternately and the difference in the richness of the two translations was even there blatantly obvious (even though the German is also a translation). The German one was poetic and some lines were so beautiful and quotable but when I looked them up in my English copy, they were always a bit of a disappointment...What a pity! Overall I liked the story but I had big issues with the telenovela-like turn in the plot, which ruined my enjoyment.

    Dragonflight was a little slow. It basically sets up the world of Pern, paving the way for the superior sequel, Dragonquest.

    I'm kind of afraid to reread the Grisha trilogy because I really enjoyed it the first time I read it, but if I reread it I'll probably notice more things that annoyed me about the plot and characters that I overlooked before (because of my FTR excitement and curiosity of how it'll turn out). I don't want to ruin the positive first impression. I totally get why Merphy unhauled it, don't wanna ruin the nostalgia

    The English translation of Shadow of the Wind is just fine. I don't know who you're talking to but I take high offense at that statement. I will say I did see a comment from someone who said they liked the book until the big reveal, which I also find ridiculous, but the reveal is going to be in the original as well and you didn't get that far so that definitely wasnt' what you had a problem with.

    I don’t know if others feel the same way, but I love buying used books especially when I discover they were annotated. It’s like having a book pen pal. If you are comfortable with it, maybe you’d consider adding those books to a giveaway for your subscribers. Marginalia always warm my heart!

    I think that because of the hype that the invisible life of addie Le Rue gets, I went into it with super high expectations and I read The book thief right before which I really enjoyed so it wasnt as good as I expected it to be.
