    • @yamamotomechbattles
      @yamamotomechbattles  Před rokem +22

      Yeah the anime really puts into perspective how epic these TSFs actually are. I think that's why they really work as mecha. Most mecha in anime are treated like the ultimate, probably beam or missile spamming powerhouses. But TSFs are kind of underpowered, as they're cool and effective, just not good enough to win the war. So then comes the F-22, wrecking house and not even being the main character, and you genuinely feel like it earns its place as the fearsome machine it is because it represents the apex of their military tech.

    See the Americans get it, more gun is always the best solution. Even if you have to hold ground, rather than devoting mass to blades and reinforced arms and stuff bring more bigger guns. If they are still getting close bring a friend who has just as many guns, it’s a defensive war, ammunition will only really be an issue if you do something silly like only build one factory.

    • @yamamotomechbattles
      @yamamotomechbattles  Před 7 měsíci

      Yeah I prefer the American style, but the frontline nations use blades primarily because their logistics can't keep pace with the degree of fighting they do. So they plan for inconsistent ammo and fuel resupply via fuel efficient designs and close quarters combat. All of these demands are amplified when doing hive capture operations, which frontline nations plan to do in order to reclaim their lost countries...and it's something the US has mostly written off due to failures in the past. Ironically, the US has the right logistics for a good hive capture operation, and the frontline nations have the better experience and tactics, but neither really want to synergize the two because of the political baggage that comes with doing things the American/Japanese/Russian/etc way.

    So, as a retired Air Force officer, I have a few issues with details about a few of these mechs. First of all, the YF-22 was superior in close-range BFM to the YF-23. The YF-23 was stealthier, and excelled at BVR (long range) combat. Interestingly, the JDF has used the BVR-focused YF-23 as the basis of their own 6th gen fighter currently in development, the Mitsubishi F-X (aka: F-3).
    Further, the idea that the US is focused on long-range combat seems....wrong. If you look at our doctrines vs other nations, we are fucking obsessed with close range combat. Our troops and aircraft excel best when right up on an enemy, such as aerial dogfighting in BFM combat, or getting infantry into close combat and engaging in one of the various battle drills (namely Battle Drill 6). Further, our special forces are strangely obsessed with pulling off edged-weapon kills against enemy combatants. And given that they are working with *Imperial* Japan (as opposed to Democratic Japan), it should be noted that the USMC dominated the IJA in hand-to-hand, with the exception of the rare officer or NCO with a sword who could match the physically much larger, better trained, and better equipped KABAR wielding crayon-munchers. Usually a hand-to-hand fight between US troops and Japanese troops ended in US victory, or massive casualties to the engaged squads/platoons.
    So, the idea that the US eschews close combat is really, really weird, especially given the type of enemy they're fighting. The US would likely have TSFs more focused with extreme damage at close range paired with larger support fighters / attackers / "bombers" that dumped ordinance on the enemy from just behind the front line of battle. The melee weapons of choice would probably so numerous as to be pilot-preference, affording options including various types of swords (lots of options, but mainly sabers), short swords (the US would steal the Wakizashi / shoto concept, or use a gladius-like thing), tomahawks (a special forces and infantry specialty, proven for breaching utility in GWoT), machetes (loved in Vietnam, Pacific, and Latin/South American theaters in many conflicts), KABAR-like knives for Marines (classic), karambits (for those who got really close, like the F-16), M9 bayonets (cheap option for Army reserves, kinda like the CIWS options shown), and extendable batons (for internal security). In many ways, the US has *more* of a capacity for and tradition of melee combat than even the IJA did, and that *grew* during GWoT.
    So, yeah, I really don't get what the creators of Muv Luv Alternative were thinking when they made the US a non-melee focused military....and in making the doctrines of the Army, Navy, and Marines all basically the same. Also, why doesn't the Air Force use TSFs? You'd thing the USAF (and all other air forces) would have adapted to the new paradigm rather than get relegated to non-combat and support roles only when Laser Class BETA weren't around, and would *at least* have their Security Forces and various special operation forces (pararescue, special tactics, weather jumpers, etc) equipped with TSFs, if not various main-line units as well that could provide additional strike capability to US Army and Navy assets, like large bomber-type TSBs in the form of the B-1 Lancer, B-2 Spirit, and B-21 Raider (similar to the use of the XB-70 Valkyrie)....I assume the B-52 would exist as an aircraft similarly to the Tu-95 Bear, and would still be in operation.

      For the YF-22 vs YF-23, yeah it's kind of known in the fandom that the capabilities were backwards. In the Total Eclipse spin off, it's evident that the Japanese creator absolutely loved the YF-23 and probably wanted its characteristics to be more melee-centered and heroic to line up with its purpose in that story.
      I don't disagree that Americans love their melee combat. Lord knows there's always the tomahawk guy in every infantry unit. Although any time I trained in CQB, the go to move was not to engage in combatives or pull a knife, but to gain distance and use your rifle. Here though, I think the Muv Luv US doctrine is based on two real world observations.
      The first is that the US military is incredibly risk-averse, and in lore, their civilian government heavily prioritizes making sure Americans don't get killed in combat. They suffered heavy losses during the moon campaign and the decades in Europe, so the leadership -- just like in real life -- have a bad day when US losses occur even if a mission succeeds. That is their number one priority, and so funding will always go to projects that fall in line with it. A personally cynical take of mine on these politicians is that it's not really about the lives and how their soldiers see it, it's about avoiding the bad day.
      The second is that their long-range preference is a historical reference to the F-4 Phantom and how the US military was so confident that dogfights were irrelevant, they never bothered to give it a gun until they learned that dogfights were, in fact, not irrelevant. So while I wish to see more Americans who enjoy melee combat, I also appreciate the writer's historical allusion.
      As for the Air Force, it really is odd how they fit in. Surface Pilots trace their heritage back to Air Force fighter pilots, but over time, they found that infantry training and tactics were far more beneficial to TSFs. So both Air Force and Army practices were combined, and I guess the Army was chosen as the better fit to integrate them. The Air Force still flies the B-1B and the B-52, and these are called in for carpet bombing when skies are cleared. And yeah, they mostly fly transports so air mobility is their focus. They tried to get funding for a project against the F-35 at one point, I forgot what specifically, but I think it had to do with their belief that the TSF would be irrelevant in human conflicts (which is a in-lore belief by many).
      I think, with how the XB-70 was incorporated as the XG-70 and saw success in this setting, it'd be cool to see America decide to revisit the concept and design the B-2 as a stealth version, the next gen hive busting super weapon or something.

    • @gunraptor
      @gunraptor Před rokem +4

      @@yamamotomechbattles Okay, so real question here....what can a TSF do that an AH-64 or AH-1 can't do?
      They fly at similar speeds and altitudes. TSFs can land and make themselves *more* vulnerable, and generally have to leave their cockpits to do anything on the ground (as opposed to, say, what a 40k Dreadnought could do with its own hands), attack helos have longer loiter time, and heavier weapons.
      Like, I love this concept, but I don't think they justified the mech-ification of Air Force planes very well.
      If the TSFs were a fair bit smaller, could fight both within and from within buildings meant for normal people, could themselves burrow or fight underwater, or held any other number of improved capabilities, I could see them strongly justified, but they're the size of two fighter jets with 1/10th the capability. If they're meant to fill a role between fighter jet, attack helo, armor, IFV, and infantry, then it needs the small size and adaptability of infantry, the speed of a fighter, the loiter time of a helo, the protection and firepower of a light tank, and the infantry fire support capability of an IFV. Really, they're just too large for what they do.
      Also, wouldn't the advent of stealth technology, as used in the F-22. F-15SE, and YF-23 basically cause the threat from Laser-class to be reduced enough to employ traditional aircraft against the BETA? The rules of "you can't shoot what you can't see" apply to light-speed weapons as much as traditional ADA.

    • @yamamotomechbattles
      @yamamotomechbattles  Před rokem +6

      @@gunraptor The key behind their design is that they work best against the Laser and Heavy Laser class of BETA. Helicopters don't have the mobility to go to ground fast enough to evade laser fire, and even if they did, they wouldn't have the means to dodge, shoot, or generally fight off the swarms that would immediately close in around them. The lasers are as precise as looking at something and then blinking, but strangely these strains are known to prioritize their targets. They go for manned airborne vehicles first, followed closely by anything they can see with high tech in it, and then standard airborne objects such as rockets or artillery shells. Oddly, they will never fire if they might harm another BETA, so they rarely aim low because usually the area around them is covered in other, larger BETA.
      Lore-wise, the TSF was heavily criticized and suffered extreme losses when first used, because it was used in more static, defensive roles and the above lessons had not been discovered. But the doctrine that solidified its role was laser suppression -- namely, a squadron would rush into a BETA herd at NOE flight to get to the slower laser class at the back, wipe them out, and then take to the skies while air and arty rotate in. It's obviously very dangerous, and other tactics are used to help them do this, such as shooting artillery and missiles in the air to draw laser fire, or designing said munitions to detonate into "heavy metal clouds" (chemical reaction, mercury based, of some sort, iirc) when intercepted so as to better dissipate laser fire. Plus getting in close with the BETA but still having a fighting chance at that range would also keep the Lasers from firing due to your proximity to other strains.
      It's the versatility and speed at which they do this that makes them viable. They can switch to whatever role they need to, rather than being heavily confined. That being said, that creates drawbacks as well -- in The Day After storyline, a battalion or so of TSFs struggled to fight four TSAs acting as SAM sites. On top of that, MBTs and even self propelled anti-air guns can do a number on a pack of advancing BETA (they just can't run away and reestablish a good position if overtaken). Attack helicopters are relied on just as much, but can only be there once the skies are cleared. Mechanized infantry (in lore term, using powered exoskeletons) exist in large numbers but are sadly, rarely shown in battle so far. TSFs are essentially the jack of all trades, master of none...but the only ones capable of switching roles as needed when in the middle of a BETA swarm.
      As for stealth, it only deceives radar and electronic systems used by humans. The BETA still have an uncanny ability to detect technology and will converge toward it to eat or destroy, so the Raptor will always be just another giant robot completely visible in their eyes.
      EDIT: Just adding that TSFs carry 2000 36mm rounds in each assault cannon, with each carrying 6 120mm rounds in an attached launcher as well. They can carry up to four assault cannons, along with extra magazines, so they have much more firepower to burn through than an attack helo as well

      they actually do employ those but not in the way you might think, TSF Divers actually make use of a special reentry pod, that reentry pod is made out of heavy metals, with the express purpose to do 3 things, Protect the TSF on reentry, Get shot at by the Beta which in turn evaporates the reentry pod which then results in the creation of a heavy metal dust cloud that dampens the Laser class' effect and lastly if they arent shot down, they literally act as the Rod's of God, which is their 3rd and final roll in order to clear the immediate landing zone of beta, as well as expose tunnels that would lead into the hive cluster effectively shortening time in order to infiltrate the hive. The alternative thing that they do is actually rain down sub-projectiles from HSSTs (space shuttles that either carry munitions for surface bombardment or TSF bays that contain the TSF and reentry pod), these sub munitions either contain fragmentaiton/cluster etc, or Anti laser munitions which are essentially containers that are filled with heavy metal dusts, and are meant to be shot at by the Laser class in order to dampen their lasers in prelude to an orbital drop, as well as to help get other munitions through to hit the bombardment area. This was showcased both on Muv-Luv Alternative's VN and Anime adaptation, i recommend you go watch the anime, but for more detail go dive into the VN which has the full details that the anime purposefully skips out on.

      Not 100% sure if this is correct, but just what I've gathered. The BETA are consistently bringing out new strains over time to counter Humanity. First the Laser, then the Heavy Laser which can target suborbital enemies, and then the Fort Laser which I'm not sure of it's capabilities.
      One thing made very clear, especially in Total Eclipse is humanity is extremely reliant on low orbit, cheap recon satellites. Without them, the BETA would practically be able to do what they want.
      I can't remember if this was an actual conversation or not in TE, but this is what I got from it. There is a concern that should anyone start dropping ordinance on the BETA from orbit, the BETA will start working towards targeting orbital platforms. Meaning you may kill a hive or two if you're lucky, but you've also lost all satellites, orbital divers, hyper-sonic transports, and anything else. They do make a point to talk about since no satellite has ever attacked the BETA, the BETA have never considered them a threat. Hence why they still use recon sats.

Edwards AFB is still Edwards AFB, JB Lewis-McChord is still Fort Lewis (as it was when the work it appeared in was written). JB Elmendorf-Richardson is called Anchorage Base.
      As for the 66th, the wiki states they are from the "US Army's Langley Base" and the codex simply says "Langley, Virginia". I never knew the two bases were so far apart, but we do know that the CIA has a huge influence over the 66th, and they were easily able to plant an agent into their ranks and presumably give pre-mission post-hypnotic cues to another pilot to make them act on the CIA's behalf. @@yamamotomechbattles Well, there is no military base in Langley, VA. It just has the CIA headquarters. The closer base would be Andrews AFB south of DC (iirc).
      But Camp Peary (aka: "the Farm") is quite close to Langley AFB (I'm just calling it that, as that's what it was most of my life), so it's not like the CIA would have to so much as buy a plane ticket to visit Langley AFB. Not to mention that the various three-letters have facilities everywhere, and are quite friendly with the military (both socially and administratively), so in the MLA universe let's just say that Langley and Eustis forming JB Langley Eustis caused lead to an ever growing mega-base as Navy, AF, Army, Marine, Coast Guard, Space Force, and even contractor facilities all started getting added into the massive complex up until the point that it reached Langley, VA, and the CIA headquarters was eventually added into this massive, monolithic defense complex stretching all up and down the US Easter Seaboard. Plot hole filled, and comically juxtaposed to reality.
      On that note, I kinda hate the disrespect this series gives to the CIA. I've barely seen any of it, and they paint the CIA as unambiguously evil, rather than, you know, providing the geopol and capabilities analysis required to beat the BETA and prevent global collapse following the successful containment of the BETA. Like, against that kind of enemy, and with Eurasia in ruins, their funding would likely be cut hugely in favor of the military, and pilots would probably fuck up anyone who attempted shady MKULTRA shit on them...with a modest chance of out-spooking the spooks who were trying to use them. But, the writers of this series don't really seem to understand the US...or their own....military very well beyond Wikipedia and a few books they got ahold of....they probably understand better than many Americans, admittedly, but it's still a bit on the level of "why didn't you hire military consultants to help you with your world building?"

      @@gunraptor That's a good way to reason it, and I agree that the CIA could definitely be explored with a bit more nuance. There was another agency in Total Eclipse that I can't recall, but based on their perspective, it seemed like they all had their own minor squabbles and disagreements among each agency. Since the story involves a Cold War that has persisted into the 2000s, I don't mind that the CIA has its own degree of shadiness to match what the Soviets do to their people. The writer loved his spy thriller conspiracies, and since I love stories like the Jason Bourne series, I'm content to see the CIA being bad guys.
      But as for the military aspect, I appreciate the writer doing their research and getting far closer to the bullseye than the vast majority of sci-fi or fantasy writers I've read. That being said, the most egregious sin is how everyone salutes all the freaking time in the VN. I was once at Tyndall meeting a friend who was an ABM, and learned that among all the Captains, Majors, and Lieutenants running around, nobody salutes because there are just way too damn many of them walking around.

Also they were fighting a defensive battle as the had to cover the retreat of the Japanese emperor. Stealth can only do so much when you can't pick your fight and the enemy is expecting you. There may also be an element of CIA sabotage but his video mostly covers how the battles went so not sure. As for out of universe reasons, well you can't have the Japanese getting their butts kicked to hard by the Americans since it is an anime. Specifically in that instance, it was kind of plot contrivance, but the enemy pilot was also an ace in his own regard. Plus, they were outnumbered and defending a VIP and rookie pilots. But the main thing was that one of the F-22 pilots was a CIA agent who overrode the commander, used a post-hypnotic cue (think Starship Troopers novel style) to take over another Raptor pilot, and started wreaking havoc during peace talks. Once the commander figured it out, he didn't realized his weapons had been locked. The agent was shot down before he could be made to confess the truth, and then Major Walken was attacked by Sagiri while covering the MC's escape...not knowing his weapons didn't work until it was too late. It depends. MS have larger caliber weapons and better defense. TSFs are about as durable as modern day aircraft, so they can't take much fire. But TSFs are much faster, even if their weapons are weaker than a Zaku or Jinn. It comes down to the pilot -- the MS pilot only needs to hit the TSF once, the TSF pilot needs to avoid getting hit and must deliver a 120mm or longblade attack into the MS' cockpit (where armor is likely weakest). Raptor would do well in this regard, but I can't imagine showering a Zaku in 36mm would do much, so it needs to close in.

    One thing that's never made much sense to me is the weapon caliber. What do you mean 36mm? That doesn't even exist! At least use 37mm or 40mm if you want to make parallels with real world weapons. Plus i never bought the fact it's just a 36mm autocanon, if you look at a bradley's autocanon it's very thin and a TSF is like 18 meter tall, the math just doesn't add up the canon on every artwork is waaaaay oversized it looks closer to 75mm or 88mm or even 100mm than it does 36. On the topic of jank caliber the sniper rifle in unlimited is supposedly *1500mm* that makes NO SENSE whatsoever, are you telling me this gun is almost twice as big as the largest caliber on the planet the 80 *CM* schwerer gustav?????? This is literally insane.
    Finally i must say 36mm as the standard ammo is just kind of underwhelming? You've all seen that bradley firing on a T90 in ukraine, the rounds were bouncing off the crew of the T90 retreated because it's part that were sensible that had been targeted but otherwise the tank was fine. Betas like the grappler being shotdown by a dozen 36mm round just seem underwhelming idk you expect 15 meter tall murder machine to resist pea shooters. Similarly only having 6 120mm seems pathetic firepower-wise for an advanced sci fi mecha that's 18 meter tall, at least make it 155mm so that you have a mobile artillery gun if you only want 6 rounds. As it stands tanks carry so much more firepower pound for pound than a TSF and the 120mm is basically useless due to how low the ammo count is, let the tank handle the 120 and go full on with the 36 on your mechas the 120 is just needlessly overcomplicating the gun design and what is it gonna be used for? Lasers and grapplers get mowed down easy by 36, 120 is useless against destroyers and fort are 66 meters what do you expect to do with 6 freaking rounds? Your entire team is gonna use its entire 120 stash to kill like 2 (maybe) and then you're out of juice.
    Idk i think tsf weapons need to be upscaled quite dramatically to make them credible against ennemies like the beta, i just want you to picture 6 tanks shooting at godzilla (who varies in size from 50 to 100 meters between versions) and then tell me with a straight face it's enough to kill it... It's ridiculous right? Something like 57/155 mm is a bit more credible for the threat posed by the beta and if you want to get degenerate 75/203 sounds like a great stop before you go in big naval gun territory. (Although 100/254mm or 120/305mm would be very based and rule of cool pilled)
    One of my complaints with the muv luv setting is the over representation of tsf, their main appeal is MOBILITY, let the firepower be handled by other elements. there is a distinct lack of combined arms warfare in muv luv because tsf end up doing most of the action, while i can understand for infantry (only somewhat though ATGMs would be quite good and a standard issue anti material/sniper rifle/grenade launcher for tank, soldier and warrior class which are only a little over 2 meter in height would do a good job) tanks and light vehicles should be more represented instead of being considered meat shield. I mean they literally have the same firepower a TSF has. i feel like the writers deliberatly wrote other arms off which is a little sad, instead of being a jack of all master of all, it would've been more interesting to see TSF as another niche against the betas instead of the all in one they are, maybe they are vanguard that thin out a horde of their smaller and less armored strains and when the beta reach the main line they encounter an unholy amount of steel and gunpowder. Because realistically it's much easier to upscale ammo and ammo storage on a wheeled or tracked plateform than a legged one. Although if i go this far we start questionning the efficacy of mechas and we arrive to the conclusion that mecha suck and tanks are objectively superior in every way so let's not go there.
    What makes modern warfare so interesting is that if you don't cover ALL your bases you're basically screwed, there is no wunderwaffe to win a war. I would like tanks/TSF/IFV combined arms, it just makes sense and is more interesting from a military nerding perspective than mechs beat all imo.

    • @yamamotomechbattles
      @yamamotomechbattles  Před 6 měsíci

      Yeah the cannons on the guns always seemed a bit big to me as well. It would be cool and make sense for them to be scaled up. I think perhaps for the time it was made, the creator saw those numbers as being adequate and not too overpowered.
      As for combined arms, those are a regular part of the battles on multiple occasions, so I can't exactly say that Muv Luv doesn't focus on it or that mecha are depicted as the only useful thing. Tanks, IFVs, and even SPAAGs are used to contain the enemy, and in lore they are noted as having more firepower than TSFs in this regard. Their problem is that they can't reposition to another battle line once they are in danger of being overrun.
      As a result, arty and CAS are used to thin out advancing herds to prevent that. These are negated by lasers, which sit at the back like AA weapons and can't easily be shot. It's possible to counter battery, but their numbers and interception rate is good enough to make it more wasteful than effective.
      So Lasers must then be neutralized by the TSFs, who are mobile; they can fly but also stand on the ground and have decent firepower for the job. Like aircraft, they don't actually have a ton of ordnance to expend (though they do have more than a fighter jet would). They're really only meant to get in and blow up all the lasers; then once the air is clear for flight, they go up and back to resupply while arty and air cover their retreat. If they aren't doing this, then they are supplementing the battle lines. It's rarely that clean, but that's all standard doctrine for Muv Luv. Even the resupply factor means that they heavily rely on logistic units doing their part.
      The whole process is combined arms. In the side novels for Schwarzesmarken, following Jurgen Bernhard, (Bernhard im Schatten) it goes over how he discovered these tactics early in the war and refined them to become standard doctrine worldwide.

      @@yamamotomechbattles i actually haven't read much on muv luv beside the stuff inside the main trilogy and a few wiki trivias so it is entirely possible that i was blowing the lack of combined arms warfare out of proportion. I just remember that while tank exist, the only time they're really mentionned in alternative is to show they stand no chances, iirc the first ever hive infiltration by the ussr used early tsf and tanks and takeru notes that having your main force composed of tanks is a death sentence so i extrapolated that tanks had become useless through tidbits like this. Honestly stoked to know the authors thought about that and aknowledged that tanks had superior firepower.
      It does make sense that we don't really get to see this in alternative since takeru knows jack about this world.
      It's pretty incredible the amount of military nerding that went into creating this world, i wish gate was 1/10th as good as muv luv instead of being your typical isekai harem but with a propaganda premium to make the usual formula even more unpalatable.
      Edit: it's true the creators might have believed the caliber to be adequate in the context of the early 2000, i mean MBT irl are moving toward 130/140mm instead of the current 120 standard, who knows one day in the 41st millenium we may get a MBT with a pion 203mm for main armamement lol
