Plenty of Sub-Saharan Africa is low in crime btw, -only some parts are dangerous. Claiming otherwise only shows your extreme ignorance. Oakland is however a very badly run and now once again declining and indeed crime ridden city with leadership and a voting public in denial.

I think that we have to understand realties, to not continue to throw good money after bad - as these restaurant owners came to realize. Cities such as Oakland have embedded problems - like stage 5 cancer. It is what is it. The shift to preserving what is left provides us with opportunities. You can still eat at a nice restaurant, but you should choose a location in outlying areas that are safe. Support businesses in your region. There are many places where you can enjoy good food, good people, and a clean pleasant atmosphere - even live music. As to shopping for goods, try to purchase at least 80 percent of what you buy at local or regional small businesses. Limit your online purchases. You'll be helping your neighbors and your community.

Forget about "fine dining" restaurant closures, crime in Oakland is shutting down businesses across the board. Sandwich shops, dry cleaners, theatres, convenience stores - you name it. But maybe the fact that upscale restaurants are closing will get rich/influential people to start making a stink about the truly crappy way the city of Oakland is being run. The mayor is in way over her head and is changing police chiefs as often as most people change their socks. The chief she just fired was honest about what it would take to restore law & order but she didn't wanna hear it or make the tough decisions she would have to make so she canned him despite his having the rank and file officer's support, bad move. She owns this now.

It's awful. It's a horrible setback for restauranteurs and the people who work at the restaurants. Successful restaurants, like Le Cheval, will find another location. There are places, like convenience stores and the few corner groceries left in the city, that feed locals, though, that will leave a significant vacuum. The same people who throw around the term food "deserts" are the same idiots who ushered in this era of crime and small business exodus in Oakland. Go to Alameda. Plenty of restaurants on Park Street and a police department that will nab the criminals before they head back to the bridge or tunnel.

Oakland has always had a lot of wealth in it's hills and still does but that is a distinct minority of the city and having lost much of it's middle class/well of working class during the "white flight" era of late 20th century, Oakland tried to "succeed" and did partly revitalize by catoring to a "elite" (and now increasingly "woke") but always hypocritical class of affluent college degreed professionals and then to hypsters, but the hypsters/former hipsters mostly left (most are broadly middle class but not elite enough) and partial gentrification just led to an increasingly polarized unsustainable city.
Now the formerly recovering patient has been pushed out of rehab and, still sick and only partially recovered from an earlier and very different era, is now dying in the street as it faces attack (literally, in the form of robbery, vandalism etc.)
San Francisco lost much of it's chericter in recent years to wealthy tech workers but significant poverty and homelessness always remained as they middle got pushed away. San Jose has always been mostly nice and still is but the city is very sprawling and it's downtown was always a bit sketchy and patchy yet also vibrant. Only in recent years has S.J.'s core begun to see so much decay...
Certian cities have played a certain role within the region and it is now more and more a tragic one.
