Advancing with Watercolor: Masking

  • In watercolor painting one of the considerations that we make is where and how to preserve the white of the paper. Because watercolor stains the paper it is very difficult to return to the brilliance of the white of the paper once covered
In this video I look at one of several basic techniques available to watercolorists - masking.
As we finish our drawing we identify some shapes or lines that we would like to keep white. Over these shapes we can apply a bit of masking tape - cut to size - or draw a few lines with masking fluid.
For me the main benefits is that I can paint more freely with these shapes masked. confident that the white of the paper will return once the painting is dry and I can remove the mask.

Sublime! It is so cool that the beauty of the patterns take charge over the optical logic. If the shapes creates nice melodies than the eye /brain will buy into the visual story. Did you see how the shape of the sails are repeated in the shadow in the roof of the building!

I enjoyed this use of masking. Inspired me to consider application in a subject of my own. Thank you.

The brushwork here takes centre stage. So inspiring and full of such depth. I like how the cobalt turquoise on the café attracts the viewer's eye without detracting from the rest of the painting. Wonderful.

I really enjoy watching you painting process. The repetition of the angle of the boats in the shadows was a great touch. I use masking fluid a bit but don’t like the harsh lines too especially if it is something with flow. Using gum arabic is to me at least more of a pain than it’s worth too but at times I do use masking tape (3m) to block off bigger objects if I would like to create a wash across the paper and that seems to do the trick. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talent.

I love the simplifying of form you achieve with minimum brushstrokes. The way you suggest light and shadow in the trees without getting into detail. It would be great to see your reference photo as I often struggle to refine the photographic image from which I’m working.

thx John - I tend to show the photo at the beginning but then as the painting progresses I give more screen to the painting itself

It's good to see another video from you. I have a couple of questions:
1.what paper is it? Don't you find the paint seeps under the edge of the masking tape?
    2. Compositionally, is the horizontal edge of the pond not too close to the centerline of the paper?
    Best regards
    Andrew

Andrew - 140 arches rough - wet back and front before painting so no masking tape - I think compositional its ok - slightly above center
