- Not So Smart (Right Now) | Terminal Gearbox Failure For My Smart ForTwo 450? | Plus ... What's That Noise?
Legends! Remember that time when my Smart ForTwo 450 went bang? I do ... thankfully Dad was on hand to rebuild the entire engine. But we didn't touch the gearbox.
The series is on the Channel ... But if you fancy more smart car woes ... here it is.
This video is an afternoon's worth of diagnostics on the car following a series of issues. Is it a terminal gearbox failure ... or something less fatal?

Love how the Smart Car has the ignition in the middle like a Saab. 😄
It's something I expect in most cars nowadays when I get in them 😂
Didn't realize you commuted so far in it... when I had my 03 Brabus ForTwo (around 2007-8) I was doing Donington Park area to Hatfield and back some days (210 miles) and Rugby and back the other days. Loved the car, the heated seats were great.
Yes it really gets a workout 😁
Brilliant ,Jon, I just love a Smart Car , but yep, they can be troublesome, especially trying to find faults, and intermittent well they can give you a headache 😵💫... all I can say is good luck with it .. I love seeing it on the channel takecare, guys 🙏
Thanks for watching. Genuinely means a lot to us!
Not a big fan of the Roller Skate, sorry Jon. But it's done well covering that mileage for what was designed as a city car. Great video, your dad should be renamed the "Professor"
That's ok ☺️ it's an acquired taste for many. Thanks for watching though :) - that's a good name for the professor
Could be the SAM unit under the passenger footwell dash. Common fault on smart cars, very expensive to replace but the issue tends to be “dry solder” problems. Did watch a video on CZcams where a guy disassembled his and resoldered! Seemed to fix it. It does affect the gears.
All appears to be ok as no three lines on the dash but ... Worth another look
Hopefully the gear problem and tach has been sorted🤞 Daisy is such a cutie 🥰
I hope so too! Won't really get to find out until after we have fitted the new control arms and taken it for a good test drive 😃 - still waiting for them to arrive
My Dad loved the Smart cars when they where new. Had to drive past one of they're dealerships twice a day. Glad you can still use it as an economical daily.
We absolutely love our smart car. Easy to park. Economical. And it's becoming a bit of a head turner 😂
Did you get to the bottom of the gear change issue? Often gear change issues are down to the clutch actuator, the grease inside dries out and sometimes they get water in them which does do them any good at all. Sometimes they can be revived by dumping in half a can of spray grease via the rubber sealing boot and then cycling them a good number of times to work the grease in. Also the actuator needs the correct pre-load, very important to give crisp changes. It should be pre-loaded with 50N, the clutch cycled half a dozen times and then the preload should be reduced to 10N being careful not the let the preload drop to nothing as you do it. You just need a suitable spring balance to this.
We believe it was the gear actuator needing some tlc and a grease
Always loved the look of the smart car, it's easy to respect because it's only trying to be tiny and easy to park etc. Give the Inspector a little pat for me.
I do love my Smart car. So practical and as you say easy to park. The Inspector says hi 😀
The rattle in the exhaust sounds like the catalytic converter is breaking up rather than stones, a knackered Cat will cause you running problems and reduced engine performance. 😮
Ah ok! Will absolutely get that addressed then! New exhaust time
A stone seems rather improbable, maybe a loose chamber in the damper (or part of a valve exited the cilinder 😅)
We think it's some leftover stuff from when the engine went boom into the cat 😂
Get the hoover hose onto the exhaust pipe and get the rattley exhaust sorted
Oh that's a good idea! I'll try it
Well its served you well for what it is , As i will give you a laugh Jon i was going to buy another car before i decided to fix my i10 , I test drove a 10 year old Mini Countryman and it seemed dodgy the gears would not shift and it had those flappy paddles etc not my thing , Luckily i did not buy it as 1 week after viewing the gearbox failed and an auto box costs £3500 to replace lol thats more than the cars worth.
Blimey! Dodged it there!
@@JonCoupland Yeah never buy the Mini Coopers with the Auto gearbox as they are very bad
Have you checked the front springs? The front end seems to be sagging and broken springs are common. Just replaced them on mine plus basically everything on the front suspension
Certainly have. Car had new front springs around 6 months ago 😊
@JonCoupland definitely looking low on the front, without you in.
@@J500ANT always has been the same. Will probably end up with new shocks tbh
@@JonCouplandCould be the wrong camber if the front is sitting low.
Interesting car… could be another new exhaust for this Smart too !
You could test the alternator by putting a load on it like the lights and heaters etc…..
@@J500ANT Mine also looks low on the front and had new springs (and dampers) in the last 18 months. I carefully checked them when I was changing the brake pipes a few weeks ago and they are perfect, nothing broken. I wonder if they are just poor quality (Suplex brand) and have sagged.
Jon, don't you have a local motor factor who can get you the parts a bit quicker? I'm sure my trusty local motor factor could get the parts the same day. You've got a few of those jobs knocked out. The exhuast sounds more like a baffle in the silencer working loose rather than a loose stone. I take it the plate is your initials rather than "Jon's Purple Car".
A lot of motor factors sadly don't stock parts for the Smart 450. Euro car parts certainly don't and actually for the sake of a few days it makes sense to us to buy online and save money. The exhaust will be getting replaced soon :) - can stand for both 😊
That footwell looks like the floor of a hamsters cage 🙃
😂😂 it's shameful I can only apologise. Once I've got it running it's going to get a good pamper
i did see a video about some ecu thingy under the windsceen/dash area?
Yes - The SAM unit! Good call! We did have a look previously at the SAM and all seemed ok
