Its sad to see CITV closing down. I was born in 2002 and loved watching it in the 00's. I feel like my age group was the last group to grow up before streaming was the norm. Some of my favourite shows to watch were My Parents are Aliens, Horrid Henry, Jungle Run, Art Attack. I will always remember channels like CITV and CBBC. They were my favourite channels as a kid and could watch them for hours.

As somebody who was an avid CBBC and CITV viewer during the Late 90s through most of the 00s, this saddens me. I feel bad for the kids now, who, because there isn't a dedicated CITV Channel, they won't be able to go to school the next day and have shared experiences, talking about what happened in this or that show, because people can access anything they want whenever. I think this is a huge shame, and CBBC will eventually go the same way. British Children's Programming is effectively being slowly killed off, and it hurts that we're all powerless to do anything about it.

I used to tune into CITV with my Grandpa after school. We'd watch Emu, Bernard's watch and Horrid Henry (amongst other things) - He died in 2013 and now the channel we had so much fun watching is dying too!
It really feels like any remaining childhood memories we had/have are being ripped away in order for the digital age to take over.

A compromise might be to rename the channel ITVX Kids, but keep the linear channel going for all the latest stuff and have live elements, interspersed with all the latest cartoons that ITV is allowed to show, but also have a catch-up/on demand area, in case circumstances prevent you from watching it as it goes out - as a boy growing up in the late 60s/early 70s - almost throughout the 70s and into the early 80s - the only option was to tune in as it went out or not see it at all - often missed the repeat as well later in the year or early next year - no catch-up, no on-demand - it took us until around 1983 to get a video recorder - dad thought it would knacker (his word) the telly - finally got one about two years following his death!

With TV going obsolete it could ruin the media industry and could put jobs at risk.

I always thought that it was actually 43 years. CITV originally launched as Watch It! on December 29, 1980, but after the first three years, ITV thought that kids brand title was too lame and was worried that that title would be some ripoff of a Mark Mothersbaugh DEVO song. During the 80s and 90s before we got satellite TV me and my brother were firmly CITV watchers for the most part. I'm surprised ITV are moving this quickly with closing a linear channel but I guess they have added commercial pressures that the BBC avoids.
I got my first taste of the ITVX service at my mum's house last Christmas. Hopefully they keep much of the kids content on the free side of the paywall. And I suppose they could always pad out the content with stuff from the vaults although I doubt it would have much appeal to the modern kids audience.

I've been planning my own rant video on this situation but I have a cold right now so I'm not up for a livestream right now and scripting the rant is proving to be difficult but for now I want to say: the streaming market is proving to be a wild west, what with Disney and Paramount putting much of their libraries behind a monthly pay wall and Netflix shooting themselves in the foot repeatedly, not to mention it's not certain that your favorite show will still be available on streaming this time next year! If both Citv AND CBBC close, this'll leave Pop as the ONLY school age kid's channel on Freeview, only other on Freesat alongside Pop MAX! I've been suspicious of ITV not caring about their kid's offering due to Citv being their ONLY channel STILL not available in HD! It saddens me that many parents raise their little ones on mass-produced shit like Peppa Pig and Cocomelon, no disrespect intended but even my own niece relies heavily on those two! Kids deserve better quality entertainment! I've been wanting Channel 4 to re-enter the kid's TV space for YEARS and I feel that if they launch a new kid's channel, it'd fill the void left by CBBC and Citv! Not to mention, such a channel could not only air new shows for today's kids, it could be a place where us adults can re-enjoy favorites from when we were kids, such as Fourways Farm, Tintin, Madeline, Biker Mice From Mars, Earthworm Jim and Johnny Bravo! I'd ESPECIALLY like Channel 4 to BUY OUT Thomas & Friends from Mattel, especially as I've heard NOTHING about whether or not today's kids actually give a shit about All Engines Go, I feel this'd be a BIG opportunity to put the original pre-Gullane Thomas seasons back on TV and pave the way for a reboot that's actually good! The Paddington reboot proves you CAN reboot an existing kid's show and do a good job of it! On the whole, I feel that the streaming wars are getting out of hand, not everyone can subscribe to Netflix, Disney+, Paramount+ and Prime Video all at once, not everyone has good internet access and the recent launch of Sky Kids proves there IS still a place for linear kid's channels on TV!

    • @YujiUedaFan
      @YujiUedaFan Před rokem +2

Additionally, streaming services seem to be in some trouble, such as licencing programs to other services because they're not making enough money keeping them in one place or even out-right removing shows that some think aren't worth it. Streaming services when Disney+ first started were seen as a library of content from specific companies, but now it's all falling apart. I know CITV viewership has dropped by two thirds, but the lack of HD options likely helped. Who knows if streaming services will just be a temporary thing and in 20 years time people may even laugh at the concept of them.
When it comes to streaming, there are several huge issues:
      1. Lack of international rights, leaving some services in some countries with a lot more content than others as well as many shows and movies being unavailable.
      2. Very little globalization of streaming services. HBOMax, Hulu and Peacock for example are unavailable in the UK.
      3. Greedy CEOs and corporate managers drastically shifting content so it reflects what they like over variety (David Zaslav and HBOMax).
      4. Brining back ads, despite the lack of ads originally being a huge factor to use streaming services in the first place.
      5. Whatever Netflix is doing with their anti-account sharing nonsense.

I enoyed shows such as Horrid Henry, My Parents are Aliens and Jungle Run, but that era is long gone. Still weirdly sad to see it go though, I always thought it would last forever as a kid.
    ALSO
Suggestion for the ident review: The 2013-15 C things competitions where they'd get drawings by kids and animated as idents.
I was actually one of the winners, so ended up making an official CITV ident of my own :)

Sad news. I recall the early days when Children's ITV replaced the Watch It strand back in 1983. Matthew Kelly was the first of the celebrity hosts. Nothing lasts forever. Then again with CBBC eventually going online it's just a sign of the times for linear TV.

As someone who grew up with CITV as a kid, and probably watched it more than CBBC (at least, I remember it more than CBBC, at least prior April 2006 before I got satellite myself), I will miss CiTV, including back when it was a block. I think it was part of GMTV aswell, but I'm not sure as I only remember GMTV as my Mam watched it often when I grew it up.
Also...the kid channel section for Freeview will diminish, I'm pretty sure the only ones that will exist are Pop, Tiny Pop & Pop Max...and if they disappear (which I'm expecting), none will exist. Although, I'm not sure if CBBC will not be staying as their own channels.
Also, nice to see Craig of the Creek on the CiTV Kids site, great modern CN show.

CBBC is ending, it's mentioned in the video, they announced it last year but it doesn't close until next year.
Kids shows on GMTV were not called CITV. They used the name GMTV2 for the secondary block on ITV2 (which moved to CITV when the channel launched, and was using the sub-brand Action Stations by then), and several sub-brands for the kids shows on GMTV itself (Diggin It and Up On The Roof, and then they merged into Toonattik).

My biggest concern about these channels closing down is for the children with parents who don't supervise the content their children watch enough. For those who do not pay for screaming services and use freeview TV, often times the main content their children will watch will be CZcams, and without childrens channels, they'll watch CZcams even more. As the stuff on there isn't monitored like TV is, I can see kids seeing all sorts of content they shouldn't if their parents aren't watchful enough.
