Thanks, I like the use of card and paper. Just had a try now and it worked well.
I actually like the tarnished look. You can see that the whistle has been played a lot when it has finger marks. However, I just used a flute cloth, which I believe is the same a silver cloth (for jewellery). It is covered in chemicals that remove tarnishing. So never wash a silver cloth.
Nickel and copper create an environment that is toxic for germs. That's why door handles are made of those materials. So no need to over do it.
I use my recorder cleaning, plastic rod with a very thin cloth to remove visible bits and I run my fipple under the tap, or soak in warm soapy water frequently. Plastic can harbour bacteria.
I keep my cleaning cloths on the rods, in a jar, like white flags of truce, near the window for max sunlight and air. I clean these cloths weekly in diluted disinfectant.

I sometimes use a silicone impregnated cloth to wipe down my brass whistles. It keeps them from getting oxidized.

You can buy a rifle cleaning rod the same size with the slit in the end that unscrews in order to be compact

This method should be all right, but I cannot say for certain, as there are many different types of metals. I don't use chemicals or anything like that, it's just a basic tutorial to keep it clean.

It depends on how much you play it, really. But I'd say as soon as you hear slight changes in the sound.

I have a flute brush that I use to clean the tube every time I play. I also wipe the outside of the tube with a soft cloth.
