    Love it! Always learning something new with your videos, thank you! One thing I've seen with towels is people using them to keep drill bits and ties organized and secure. With drill bits, I take the towel folded as is with the flap down and staple down the line every 1-2 cm or so to create individual pockets for my diamond and cutting cutting burs in ENT cases. This way I can keep 4-8 different types of drill bits organized and secured (not rolling around anywhere). I do the same thing with ties. I've seen people keep them tucked in the sides of their Mayo's under the tray or under the towels they put down on their Mayo's. I like totake the ties out of the package, stretch them out in a towel, fold it in half then tuck that under my mayo roll towel or a heavy retractor so it doesn't budge when I grab a tie and pull it out. Hope that made sense! Thanks for your videos!

    Very useful for beginners. Wish I had these video tips during my CST program. Awesome way to contribute to our line of work brother! Keep up the great work. I've been scrubbing for a little over 4 years now but still enjoying all the videos 👍. What's your point of view on the best method for CST's to receive CE's and applying them towards our profession?
    One of my co-workers does the towel trash bag you speak of in the video 🙂 He's been scrubbing for 20+ years💪 In big cases I actually use a sterile x-ray cassette drape on the bag of my mayo. I apply it to the mayo drape prior to the reinforcement towel. Since it comes with an adhesive side it's well secured from dropping. Helps out a lot when the trash bin is across the O.R. 😁

      +dahwaterboy1 I'm all about that cassette drape garbage bag man! Love it on big cases. As far as CEU's, I just buckled down and did a study grind on my last year before renewal doing all of the tests on the AST site.

    Explain “throwing off the field.” What does that entail? I’m not a CST but carefully considering that career path.

  • @wholeNwon
    @wholeNwon Před 6 lety +1

    Once pierced with penetrating towel clips, they should not be repositioned; non-penetrating may be moved. The iodine impregnated incise barrier is sterile; the skin is NOT, therefore its primary purpose. Cutting it into strips to hold towels in place is just silly and the material is difficult to remove from cloth towels making unnecessary work for others. A trivial point is that the towels' edge should ideally be placed first against the skin so that air currents so produced do not direct air up into the field.

    What would qualify as a "small case?" Does it depend on the number of instruments used in the case? Or the amount of time? Or what is done during the surgery? Would a VSG be considered a small surgery? I don't remember much from my operation but it seemed like there was a lot of stuff on the back table/mayo stand.

    • @SurgicalTechTips
      @SurgicalTechTips  Před 6 lety +2

      What constitutes a "small" case would be a direct relation to the complexity of the surgery. Time of the surgery kind of goes in hand with the complexity as well.

    Ok, so I am not in the CST field, or medical field, I’m in the chronic patient field (ha ha). My question may therefore seem ignorant. Why disposable towels? It just seems to me like such a waste. I could perhaps understand for ones being used on the patient themselves as they may become irredeemably soiled. But a towel that just holds instruments can not be cleaned in a way to make them sterile again? Or, if you could not get them to the level of sterilization for surgery, but could get them safely clean, couldn’t their be other uses for them after their lives in the OR? Are the disposable towels at least recycled in some manner or are they incinerated? Also please note that I’m assuming these disposable towels are made from cloth. Thank you!

    • @nw24153ns
      @nw24153ns Před 6 lety

      Diane Luke At my hospital the towels & drapes used on the patient are disposable and all other towels are washed/sterilized and reused (as are our gowns.) The down side to this is that all the fluids on the field end up on us or the floor and it's not safe; either contamination of staff or it makes the floor slippery.

    • @becspinks
      @becspinks Před 6 lety

      My hospital has a program where used towels are washed and sold for charity. We mostly use them to dry our hands after scrubbing and sometimes to wipe the excess prep of a patientpost procedure but hardly use any of these techniques

    • @SurgicalTechTips
      @SurgicalTechTips  Před 6 lety +1

      +Diane Luke we have reusable towels that are packed with our metal basin sets and some instrument trays. Disposable towels are always in our sterile packs though, it's kind of sad to see how much waste there is in the OR.
