How do you get ready to mix??
Same way. Try to mix in the morning, reference tracks, play the whole song and make a few notes and start with those
I didn’t have a process, but I should probably change that lol thanks for the ideas!
I get my fav glass, 2 ice cubes, a couple oz of whiskey, couple more of cola
Aaaand now i think i misunderstood what you meant by mixes
What about sub mixes like for the drums, and parallel tracks.
I put a sub mix for the drums, duplicate it for my "crushed" drums. I sub the bass tracks, usually 3, one DI, one Amp, and a duplicate of the Di one is low end one is high end.
Do you have any submixes before the master fader? if so, how to you bus to it? What is it called in Pro Tools? I've seen some mix templates using something other than the master fader. Something about delay compensation not being an issue if you route this way, but I have not gone down that rabbit hole yet.
I color code my "Groups", so all drums are red, guitars green, vocals blue, bass brown, etc. IT really helps when I have to revisit a mix I can visually just go right to where I need to go by using the same layout and color scheme. Thanks for the video! Very helpful. Now I'm off to declutter my work space! LOL!
Maybe you could do one video just on bussing for FX, grouping things like all the bass sources, BG vox, etc. for easier control. When you buss to an aux input as opposed to putting a plug in directly in the insert bus. Also, bussing via the main output of each track or bussing via the "sends" section and why you prefer one over the other.
Gain staging. 💯 I turn them all the way to 11...
A video about layering vocals would be amazing!
Will do!
I second this
yasssss
@@ColtCapperrune yesss!! Awesome
I find getting in a good/appropriate mindset really hard with a home studio space. Like you said, so many distractions and things to make me feel guilty for neglecting them. Getting in the chair is definitely the hardest part for me! Great video.
A video on layering pop vocals? Yes please!
Would love a video on how to layer vocals, if I could also suggest some of the things inside the video that I often struggle with.
How many tracks? Do you just double the vocal? Do you make one a little faster (12ms? 44ms?) Do you have the vocalist sing a high or low harmony or do you just pitch the lead up or down? when to do which method and why? how far third, fifth, octave? How do you layer vocals in a verse vs the chorus? Do you send them to the same reverb FX? Do you EQ them differently? Do use a single note background harmony to create space or to fill the space with constant sound? if so do you use middle C of the singers voice and go up or down from there? or do you use the root, third or fifth of the chord progression to find the note you need in the background? How do you pan them? Do you mix in mono at any point?
Currently working on a song and I"m struggling to get the lead vocal to sit right, I think if I can learn how to layer and create that stack it would help me a lot. I hope this helps so maybe you can help me!
All great questions! I’ll work up a video!
I second this ☝🏼
I third this! Thanks for your great question Paul Fidei!
Those are great questions! Will definitely wanna know the answers to these!
For me the least favorite part of a mix is also the longest and most important. It's the set up. Spending the time to organize a session, clean up tracks by removing dead space, checking for phase issues, time alignment problems, routing, setting my gain to -18dbfs on all tracks, all that boring stuff helps zen me out and lets me hear each element of the mix and as I build the session up before I even attempt a balance I have sorted out in my mind a plan of attack and know what I want the outcome to be. It also lets me identify issues with sibilance, frequency masking, build ups, etc. that I will need to work around. I hate it in every session, but in every session after an hour or so of doing all the prep work when I start getting a balance to when I get my first draft is typically about 30 minutes to an hour depending on how big the session is.
At this point I take a couple minutes break. When I get back to it I pull up a reference or two and listen to that before jumping back into the mix. This points out all the things I either forgot to address or fucked up in the first place lol. I then spend probably another 20 minutes to 2 hours doing subtle adjustments and tweaking the mix to get it perfect. This stage is usually when I finalize any reverb, delay, or special fx and do the automation. This organization also helps me keep an eye on my CPU and do the most necessary things first and prioritize in huge sessions to make the most of my computers resources. It usually doesn't matter unless they want a mix in 88.1 or have more than 60 tracks. After this I get on to another mix or whatever else needs to be done and come back to check it the next day with fresh ears. If I like it in the morning and it has no issues I can hear it goes to the client. I take the same approach when I mix my own tracks as well.
„Clean up your stuff“ - This is so, so, so important.
I have just started studying Audio Engineering at uni here in Sydney. Its a bit of a career change for me at 42. Thanks for your videos, they are easy to watch and very infomative. I'm glad I found your channel.
That’s crazy I lay out my mixes in a similar way without ever being taught or learnt from any where, good to know I’m on the right track!
GREAT advice about a "clean" work area. At one time I owned a recording studio, so always interested. In Retirement I am pro photographer and an life long woodworker. The clean organized work space is GREAT Advice. Totally enjoy your "voice" and content.
Yes - a video about layering pop vocals would be awesome
Thanks Colt, really great protocol for preparation!
Good brother! I stumbled upon your videos of you building your studio months ago during quarantine and I must say I thoroughly appreciate your content. You have so much wisdom, passion, knowledge, character and integrity for your art form. Thank you for sharing with us!
YES, PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON LAYERING VOCALS!
Dude that before and after was great. Thanks for that. Great mix. Sounded awesome on headphones. Your channel has great production value and the advice is great too.
It’s all about setting the mood prior - in terms of both visual and audio! 👌
Keeping internet to a minimum is a must!
100%!
YES for the video on layering vocals!!!
Cleaning is crucial! I always clean my studio before writing a new arrangement or doing the mixing, anything. You're 100% correct about "clutter effect"
Yes. A video on layering pop vocals please.
Another great video Colt! - "The Magic is in the Midrange!"
Yes to the pop vocal layers!!!!
Yeah man, that was quite helpful, indeed. Thank you. Also, yes, I'd love to see a vid on layered pop vocals. Bring it!

Great video Colt!! Thanks for showing us your workflow! I was hoping you would do a video on this!! I’d love to see a video on how you layer pop vocals!! Thanks again for the awesome content! I’m a big fan!
You're my new favorite channel
Yes, I would love to see a video of how to layer pop videos. I really enjoy your videos and your organic, this-is-how-you-do-it presentation.
You wake your daughter up for daycare? That sounds like heaven. My daughter always wakes up so early so I haven't used an alarm in the morning since she was born!
Colt I think I speak for a lot of your subscribers when I say please do a video on layering vocals that's so important and I really struggle with it. Thanks for the unreal content man you're awesome!!
And yes to the stacked vocal lesson
Now that’s the cutest doggo there
Your rough mix sounds 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I hope your dog gets well soon :)
Thanks for your videos.. They are really helpful!
I’ve been organizing tracks either the night before or while I’m listening to the reference tracks. Love the incites here. Thanks
Good stuff! Thanks for watching!
Great vid Colt!
Layering pop vocals! would love to see a video on that. :) Thanks Colt, your videos are great.
YES! VIDEO ON LAYERING POP VOCALS!
Funny to see you without a hat! Look at that fresh trim 🔥🔥🔥
Dude!! I clean my studio before every new project too! And also usually buy a new candle as well.. Part of my process!
Yes, I'd like to see a video on vocal layering
Layer pop vocals!!!
Yes, vocal layerings, please!!
Colt, have you thought about doing a paid masterclass walking through one of your mixes? Including your hybrid setup with outboard gear. Because I would totally pay for that. In a heartbeat. David over at MixbusTV just did a new rock course which is SO GOOD, and he also uses a hybrid setup like you. It's hard to find peeps that show that workflow because everyone thinks you have to stay with plugs and in the box. But there's a lot of us who buy outboard gear and are constantly trying to learn. Thanks for all your content homie.
yo colt thank you for your great content, would love to see the video on layering pop vocals!
This is awesome! Hope you will talk more about reference tracks and what tracks you use as a reference, and why. Your videos are informative and straight to the point, I like that.
Love the dog btw 👍🏻
Yessss Please make a video on layering vocals! :D
Would love a video on pop vocal layering!!!
If you could check out vocal layering on:
The 1975- “If you’re too shy let me know” (not the live video version on CZcams)
it sounds so good and if you have any insight I would love you for it! Thanks dude.
Definitely would love to see pop vocal layering tips!
Thank you for this video 🔥🔥
Layering pop vocals, yay!
Subscribed for the doggo!!! But also nice mixing tips ♡
A vocal layering video would be GREAT 👍🏼👍🏼
Great video!
Dog is too cute man.
Yup. Layered vocals... definitely interesting
I really like the idea of starting the day with the reference, I usually wait until I’m stuck but I’m going to try that today. I also like to see you don’t use templates. I don’t either for a similar reason but I was starting to doubt that workflow
thumbs up for the pop vocal layers video
Yeah! please make a vid about whole pop vocal production
Definitely want to see how to layer pop vocals!!
good tips about clean up and clutter!
Would love to see a video on layering pop vocals!
Great tips! Pretty sure if master is to hot loud things get crushed. I try to keep it no more than -7 RMS, even -8 is good so it can breath a little..
Great video! Some great tips there. Out of interest are your computer screen on custom made wooden stands?
Yes do the pop vocal vid 🤘🏼🤘🏼
I think a video about layering vocals in general would be really cool! Maybe do a series where you talk about different ways of mixing vocals in different genres
Would DEFINITELY love a video on how to stack pop vocals, PLEASE!
Layering would be amazing!
great channel
Good stuff as always buddy... maybe one on a simple session and how you place each track in space (pan and depth) and EQ's to let everything breathe. Easier said than done I know! (actually doing it and to video it!)
I would love to see a video/mix of yours run through your analog gear and the same song in the box only--using comparable plugins only if possible. Really enjoying your channel BTW!
For me mindset equals progress which is what i think you convey as an underlying message regardless of plugins and equipment! As such i find myself watching more and more of your videos!? Lol
yes-yes-yes! POP VOCALS!
Pop vocals YES!!
Hey man! I’m about to build a desk and I love what you’ve done here to keep your monitors out of the way of the speakers but still have two. What size screens do you have? And did you build some wood brackets or something to hold them? I think that’s what I can see anyway. Thanks for the vids!
Got them old dogs, vitamins and coffee that help me out too brother. Happy mixing!
Lol i have to clean too b4 i mix, thought I was the only one 🤷🏽♂️
Bring on the vocal layers!
Cool vid; thnx for sharing!
What headphones would you advise for mixing (of course next to the monitors)? And why would you advise open or closed backs? Cheers!
Id love a video about layering pop vocals!
Hey man I have been watching a lot of your videos lately and i was wondering what camera do you use. Thanks. Keep up the good work
Damn we gonna need a mix video from you now lol
1) name all tracks relevant names
2) color code them according to what group they'll be in (drums, vocals, guitars)
3) put all tracks with matchings colors in groups
Hey Colt, Thanks again. How are you routing your Hardware into your DAW
Thank you
Hi colt
I would like to know how you go from your productions rough mix session in to your mix session in terms of :
Are you exporting the production multitrack into a fresh session or continuing working on the same session of the production while diving deeper into mix ?
If you do export to a fresh session ... what plugins are you leaving out ? Are you bypassing the compressors and eqs you used in the production rough mix and start completely fresh ? Also what about reverbs ?
Anyway I really appreciate the video just that I was hoping to see how you from production into mixing intermediate of your descions
Thanks a lot
I love your videos, they're super helpful. SUGGESTION: Use OBS or a screen recording program so we know what you're talking about on your screen, it would take these videos to the next level. Thank you so much in advance!
Make that layering video!!!! 🙌❤️
Yes to layered pop vocals
Layering for sure
5:50 Anything with layering heck yeah. Cheers stay safe.
I will glad see a pop vocal layering vid if you'll do one
We need the vid about layering vocals!!
Yea would like to see layering vocals
I’d like to see a video about committing to sounds before you record, how you approach it, what you feel should be printed, etc etc. Not necessarily what to do, but how you do it and some things to watch out for
How much do you think your computer monitors are affecting the sound? I have my speakers pretty much in line with my computer monitors and seniors back that far makes me reconsider my positioning. Your mixes sound great so obviously you’re used to whatever the affect is.
Yes! How do you layer Pop vocalssss?
Cool video, you said you send the mix through a hardware preamp. Is that a channel strip preamp with eq or compression? Or, if it’s just a preamp what does that do to the sound? Thanks man.
+1 on layering vox 💪
Thanks! Will do!
Colt can you do a video on live horns, how you record them, layer them etc, looking forward to it.
