I feel like that summarizes most of the problem with gen z and it makes me sad. I was so happy to see that emotional abuse was finally a thing people were addressing (as I was diagnosed with PTSD because of it and refused to get help for years because I just didn’t believe that emotional abuse existed and was raised to believe that “anything goes” in how others treat you as long as it’s not physically visible.) It was great to have mental health issues and other issues suddenly talked about. But then it went way too far- to the point where people were arm chair diagnosing narcissistic personality disorder and throwing around the word “gaslight” at every possible situation. Gen Z has done this with so much- ADHD and Autism used to have such a stigma attached to them but now are so over diagnosed and over used that people who actually need help are struggling to receive it. It’s similar for being trans- there are genuinely trans people in this world, but a lot of people who experienced trauma associated with their bodies or who simply don’t align with their gender roles are over identifying as trans, to the point where actual trans people have to face more gatekeeping. Social justice was “uncool” for a while and as a result there was an abundance of casual racism and sexism, but the guilt ridden “check your privilege” cancel culture that has emerged alongside greater awareness about these issues is simply counter productive. I reassure myself by realizing that culture tends to work in massive swings- we’re likely overcompensating in one direction only to take another step back, and so the pattern continues.
