    The lady saying not to take bites personally- that's the BEST advice for bird owners. I'm so used to dogs and their unconditional love and cuddles that when I owned birds I took bites so personally. I felt like I was doing something wrong or that they hated me. The truth is, they are wild animals. They are not dogs. They're wired differently. Your bird can love you so much and want cuddles all the time, but that won't stop them when they are hormonal, scared, or just in a bad mood, from biting the fire out of you lol

    • @josiesullivan6204
      @josiesullivan6204 Před 2 lety +6

      Also, dogs are the same lol. Wanted to note that, as well. Every dog has the potential to bite and growl when they're having an off day or feeling bad. Animals do not comprehend emotions the same way we do. They have instincts that drive them more than their emotions. So important to know with ANY pet.

      I appreciate how you compared their nature to dogs. I always try to tell myself dogs have been with us for at least over 30,000 freaking years. Parrots have been with us for a mere few generations which is insane compared to how long dogs have graced us with their company. What I’ve learned is we humans have so much more to learn about parrot behavior and how to interact and provide for them in a healthy way. It’s gonna take generations at least. But it’s people like you who care that make all the difference.

    I’m a horse trainer and I find this so interesting. Horses are very much the same in the concept of training them not to fear things. I had a client who told me her horse was afraid of the color purple because of a purple saddle of that scared the horse. So she would show up with purple things, one thing specifically was a purple umbrella. And she sat there and opened it up next to the horse. But the timing was all off. She ended up scaring the horse more. When I got the horse in training, I desensitized her to the purple pad and umbrella. But the problem wasnt that the items were purple. It was the technique or lack of technique that was implied when using the items. And the technique that was continued to be used everytime the items were brought near the horse. Often people tip toe around horses with items that the horse is scared of but what you’re really doing when you tip toe around is showing them a reason to be scared of the item with your body language and energy.

Took a year and a half to get her used to us and know that she was not going to be mistreated. KiKi turned out to be the sweetest cockatiel ever. I trained her and then taught my husband. Or was it relating to how close the bird is to face level? & why is a high perch a problem? Many thanks for an exellent channel! I tell everyone about it. I have a wish for a video if that is OK? In these times where everyone is told to prepare for hard times, natural disasters , fires, lack of food etc. I believe we all need a parrots prepardness video. I mean a really loong video where you intervieuv veterinarians about how to protect your parrot from smoke ( I heard there are companies making breathing masks for babies) , how to feed your parrot veggies during emercency like can they eat canned food? Ryggsacks for carrying your parrot with you if you have to leave your home, foldable cages, living in a car with a parrot or several, what heath sources are ok to use during emergency and how to train our parrots for fire drills, evacuations. We have two grey, a goffin and a duck. We keep our travelcages next to their big walk in cage in case of fire. Is it ok to cover a large walk in cage with thick plastic in case of wildfire to protect from smoke? What medications are good to have on hand? When prepardness videos or preppers talk about prepping for animals its always about dogs or cats. I believe it is really needed for parrots to and no one can do it better than you. Please show products that are a good purchase in such a video in different price categorys because I really feel that we are many who really want to prepare in case of power outages or other events. Maybe you could also contact parrot food suppliers and ask how long their food is really safe to use? How to prolong their use? I know this is much to ask but you are the best parrot channel. 😊

      did you see that bird tricks now sells a freeze dried veggie mix? That would be the easiest option for an evacuation pack/prepping, but a couple of packets of that, use one to get your parrot used to the food, then keep the other one sealed & in your evacuation pack, that way fresh veggies/no diet change & no difficulty carrying the food (the freeze dried stuff lasts 20 years when sealed)

      @@judithweymark8643 thanks :) my lorikeets have a down period in the early afternoon each day, then perk right up again (actually they're time shifted to match my routine, but what would otherwise be early afternoon without that). I have quite a few issues with a neighbour & noise, was wondering if he'd been doing something to disturb their sleep & they weren't getting enough, but also thinking it seemed like it might be a midday sleep thing, so thanks for confirming this is normal for Aussie birds, that is really helpful to me!
      Can I ask though, do they actually sleep in the wild? I've heard that wild birds do NOT sleep during the day, as they need to be awake & alert for predators. Mine tend to not actually sleep, just look like they're going to fall off their perch from overtireness & trying to sleep, but won't actually sleep, as they get more relaxed with me, they're starting to slightly doze, not sure if to expect that will continue & they will end up actually sleeping, or if they will always just have a wind down/do nothing rest period at that time of day to recharge. I doubt they slept in their old home when it was light, wasn't the best home for them
      Also, anytime I get up to go to the toilet during the night nowadays & have to go through the room my birds are in, I get bell ringing tantrums, so I'm thinking of getting them a white noise machine with rain sounds or similar, not sure if that would help them relax or keep them stimulated though, do you have any idea?

    • @judithweymark8643
      @judithweymark8643 Před 2 lety +1

      @@mehere8038 I don't know if a white noise machine will help. Being prey animals, parrots are always vigilant. Maybe try a white noise you tube clip before investing money??
      Re daytime sleeps. I read somewhere that parrots can sleep with one hemisphere of their brain at a time and so can keep on the lookout for predators even while napping. The wild lorikeets in my yard aren't close enough for me to see if they are fully asleep or just chilling, but they definitely get very quiet in the middle of the day and you seldom see them flying then.
      I have a little green cheek who always goes to sleep in my hand at night in front of the TV. And I mean flat on her belly, wings drooping both eyes shut fast asleep. I think it must be so nice for her to be completely relaxed and feel safe. I get so much joy from that.

    Hey Womacks!
    So, my son & I love watching your channel.
    Unfortunately, it made more sense for our first pet to be a cat, so we got a kitten in September shortly after becoming first time home owners. Lately, she has become a handful with her clawing us in these formative months. And, no, we will absolutely NOT get her declawed. I will be trying all your bird training techniques to hopefully squash some of her overly feisty idiosyncrasies, in the meantime, though, do you have any professional peers that specialize in felines? Like maybe with a CZcams channel we could subscribe to? We have her on Blue Buffalo kitten pâté & kitten kibble, but she definitely earned the nickname Lady Deathstrike after her first flea bath, lol, because I also refuse to give her regular ingestable pharmaceuticals & those toxic flea collars that they can get in their mouths.

      From my experience owning cats all my life--a scratch or a bite means stop. Stop petting. Stop giving attention. Even if she's just playing, when she scratches, say "ow!" (not yelling, but firm voice), and remove your body from the situation. If it's a playing situation, immediately grab a toy after the "ow!" and start playing with that.
      Claws are for toys, not for people.
      If she bites or claws you when you're petting her, that's her telling you that she's had enough. Listen to that. Respect her space.
