It is an interesting conversion. Can’t wait to see it all put to the test. The filmed detail of this conversion has been brilliant. At first it had my curiosity, then it had my attention.

If you want to clean off oxidization on alloy castings get some cheap domestic oven cleaner from the supermarket. Look for one with warnings about not using on aluminum. That is the one you actually do want. Spray it on but do 'NOT' leave for more than 2 minutes. Hose it off and repeat if necessary. Then if particularly fussy you can use some fine wet and drive sand paper and polish etc. Otherwise just coat the deoxidized allow with WD40. Test on something unimportant/junk first.

I hope my missus doesn’t get involved in a prang, just did a port n polish on the head and matched all the bolt on manifolds. You’re surprised how mis-matched the two piece inlet manifold is from factory, 5mm. Kid you not

Would the barra be a good full size truck engine to replace my ford 5.4 3v triton engine? I’d be using it to tow my race vehicle on weekends occasionally also.
Bought a car once it had the flywheel bolts welded on, hated that cnt.

Well, that's a first for me, never seen anyone weld flexplate bolts before. I'd be concerned you've just created a heat fracture point myself but what would I know.
Have seen a 4JJ1 swap where those bolts came loose and gearbox had to removed again to torque them up to spec, so yes do understand the issue but never seen it done.
Would I do it? Nah!
Lots of work, engine swaps are.
Gotta be keen to follow through with them.
Myself, wouldn't bother, if ZD30 ever goes bang I'll get same for same myself.

Agreed, never in my life have I seen anyone weld bolts to flex plate. It was a bit more than a tac too.
That aside, they've done this conversion well.
@@deancranley2241 the locking plate option is the best. I just used arp bolts and lock tight, been good for the last 5 years.
Yeah its pretty common on these Barra's, people weld the flex plate bolts on
They are notorious for coming in done for some reason. On my XC Barra turbo, we doweled the flex plate into the crank and used a special non slip washers kit from atomic performance). There are a couple of different ways to skin a cat in this space

03:10 is that penetrative welding on the chassis? If so, that piece will need to be engineered.

We are in the VHC at the moment but when we return next week we will be straight into continuing the build.
Mackielec flex plate retainer kit and ARP flywheel bolts are a much better deal than welding. Also, add a yellaterra flex plate for reliability. Why did you fit a ba rocker cover when an fg na cover works better with the coils and looks better? Cheers
Burto might have to answer but something to do with the wiring/electrics matching the ECU from the terrority we are using, being less headaches/wiring dramas down the track

Mate nicely done and a common conversation from what I understand. But can I ask why you didn't choose to go with a Toyota 1HD-FTE.
Wanted the ZF6 speed auto that comes with the barra and FTE conversion is more expensive
The real question is, why is the 1HDFTE such a low performer ? My FG XR6T Barra makes 1100nm at the wheels on only 15psi on u98 at 3000rpm.
Worlds apart as far as perfomance is concened. And, stump pulling 1500rpm diesel torque will break everything in the old 80 series drive line, so petrol is better - ie torque spread out over more of the rpm range to preserve the drive line.

So you could just use locktite im feeling you affected the balance of that flywheel?
They are a common issue. We have used Loctite, a dowel kit into the crank and special non slip washers. But our application is North of 700rwkhp.
Honestly a good mod. Doing this on the side of a track would not be fun. Bush proofing it.

Do you really need to turbo it? Drive it first you will be surprised how well it will go without a turbo.

Because you'll see the rocker cover, will barely see the block under the intake and exhaust manifold, turbo and everything else
Yea good point. But in general Toyota engines are so detuned. A bit of time on a reputation tuner who knows what they are doing and it can be a different engine.
