This film resonated with me being 66 yrs old and knowing a lot of families whose sons were being drafted at the age of 19 to go fight in Vietnam if they were not enrolled in college. The privileged young men of the school had no worries (except for Angus who's threatened with military school), but even after attending this prestigious prep school, Curtis was drafted. Very sad, but true- a lot of those young men were black & Latino. BTW, I'm pretty sure that Mary said it was Curtis who liked Artie Shaw music she kept playing at the party. She said something about a kid liking that kind of music. Thanks for the review, guys.
I saw this with my 66yr-old dad and it resonated with him dodging the draft by a year
I have Trimethylaminuria disorder. It makes sense why he’d be an angry person because everyone always wants to stay away from you since they think you’re dirty and you know you make everyone uncomfortable. Eventually you get used to be alone and prefer it that way. This disorder does make you an angry person even if you weren’t at first since you also are forced to hear people say things about you constantly. This is the second time EVER where I’ve seen a character have this disorder in a film
They cried together at the end, because when you bond with someone, even if it was just for two weeks, especially during the holidays. That person becomes a special part of your life. I’ve had to miss Christmas and the people I bonded with that depressing eve and day I’ll never forget. Absolutely loved this film.
Knowing Joseph has a prolific bad memory and then watching him reminisce on 'the spread brought to my car' was absolutely hilarious to me 🤣🤣
Sideways was the movie about two bachelors who drive around California wine country going to numerous wine tastings and courting women. Giamatti character loves pinot noir and hates merlot and the movie apparently negatively affected merlot sales. Does that ring a bell at all, joseph?
The reason angus lied about going to see his father is because he didn’t want to tell Paul that he was in a psych ward. Paul thought he was dead
This is my kind of movie! I've loved Paul Giamatti for years! I've only recently discovered Da'vine Joy, and I lover her so much too!
I can't wait to hang out with this group for awhile!
In regards to the final scene of Paul at a T intersection deciding what direction to go, it remains me of the end of The Graduate. A decision has been made, a future uncertain. It should definitely score an Oscar nod for cinematography for just the wonderful 1970 look of the film.

@@scoutwithoutclout Yes, I was thinking that very thing. The character played by Tom hanks was at a literal crossroads in his life. I found the ending in both the Holdovers and Cast Away to be so hopeful.
Alexander Payne is from my hometown of Omaha Nebraska where most of his movies are shot. Great review as always.
This was a great movie! And remind me of a teacher I had in the past his name was Howard how was the 19-year-old kid coming from California not know how to read he taught me how to read protected me from being suspended and expelled so gratitudes to my teacher so put tears to my eyes. So that's really hit home for me it was a great film

You are some tough critics. Tough but fair. I also felt the firecracker scene would have been a perfect ending. Payne is tremendously solid.
You guys are very observant. Hyper-critical, yes, but very observant. 😉 I disagree that Mary is left in the dust. By visiting her sister, she was showing that she was trying to move on from being frozen in her grief.
Even though you gave us the ending at the beginning of the video ; I really enjoy how you all ( again) lol interact. Usually with other reviews once I know whats gonna happen, i stop watching lol but I truly enjoy watching you all. 🥰, thank you for your humor .Also, I’m about to watch, this movie; and as a dinosaur nurse, i didn’t know “Librium” was for anything other than sedation or alcohol withdrawals;so can’t wait for that part,where they are both on it to come up ☺️🙃. This is a movie that has stayed with me since I saw it. I really can't shake it. I didn't think it was more than a good film I enjoyed enough. But the more I think about it, the more I realize how much it affected me. While it may not be a great film like I think Sideways is. However, the emotional truth and transparency and the level of emotional ambiguity for the characters is quite profound. I really can't shake it, and I honestly think I loved this film in some ways.
I thought this movie was fantastic…. It hit on every note… it has real interesting characters and a great story arc…
Just got home from my showing. I really enjoyed it, it had a nice blend of humor, heart, drama, kinda what I've come to expect from Payne. Fantastic performances by the leading trio. It definitely didn't come close to The Descendants, which is definitely my favorite from the director (and one of my personal top 10), but I'd put it about on par with Sideways in his filmography.
Thank you for your work. This director does like this actor, Paul, although this director does tend to focus on a particular race, and gender character experience overwhelmingly. I love the observation about just enjoying the characters, and wanting to hang out with them. Might give this movie a look. Thank you.
Da' Vine Joy Randolph and Rachel Sennott were the stars in last summer's dumpster effigy The Idol. I discovered them both and look forward to their future products. This movie sounds amazing. I will definitely see it soon. Thank you as always much love.
I totally saw it last week and it was amazing in its throwback approach to the rating symbol at the beginning and the format of the credits as well. It was well executed and bittersweet in the fact that most movies used to have this kind of interaction with the audiences.
Paul Giamatti was great in this film. I loved him in "American Splendor."
Sideways is a masterpiece.

Appreciate your comments on the positive nuggets here. If I saw it end, the way it did...I would be clearly saddened by, the plot's "unfairness!" But, now I know, I could overlook that. An aging Teacher's self worth, and the strong Manager is poignant, has difficult, yet heartwarming resolution, for one character.

Absolutely---Five Nights was the last movie I saw, and this one helped clear that memory.
The teacher with teh nice house implied she lived with her mom. Also, she could've been from a wealthy family in town, but didn't have money herself, hence the waitress job. Honestly, it made sense to me.
I'm 67, class of '74, and grew up in a rancher/tract house like that. South Chicago suburbs. We all had those brick houses and none of us were well-heeled. Accurate down to the finished basement where you had to duck to go downstairs with the bar in the back and the kitchen--whoa-- the layout, flooring, brown refrigerator, and copper tiles were exact copies of many of my friends' and relatives' houses. We were solidly middle class, Mom didn't work, (and really, married women didn't need to back then). However, I also do get the impression that Lydia's Mom lived there too (maybe widowed). Back in those days, women couldn't even have their own credit cards (yeah, really).
You knew the guy in the bar was a Vietnam vet just from the jacket he wore even before you saw his hook (no fancy prosthetics back then). The Vietnam war was never very far from peoples' minds in those days, so the the fear of not having a college deferment was real. We had the draft back then and if a guy was unlucky enough to have a low draft number, well, you went to 'Nam. College is how the rich kids avoided it and the poorer boys ended up over there (a disproportionate number being black). Most of us had older brothers or uncles who went to 'Nam. We watched the fighting, the medics, and the helicopters every night on the news at dinnertime.
One thing I never see mentioned in these reviews is the subtle class thing--ie, the rich white kids and teachers were always addressed as Mr, or Miss, but black adults like Mary and Danny were always addressed by their first names. Subtle, but accurate. A lot of details that maybe people of the younger generations wouldn't pick up on. (Peacoats and those toggle-closure coats anyone?) Everyone smoked everywhere, had long sideburns, and most boys wore their hair long. My HS boyfriend was always getting threatened by his dad that he would cut his hair in his sleep, so even that was familiar.
I absolutely loved this movie--not just for the nostalgia, but the character development, dialog, plot, and the cinematic way it was shot. I didn't feel any of the plot points were extraneous and that they all served a purpose. The handshake at the end was perfect. A hug would not have been real, but that handshake conveyed so much. They both knew they'd changed because of the other. Angus knew the significance of the sacrifice that was made for him and you can tell that he was not going to waste that. Paul was freed from his suffocating cocoon and though this was frightening, he was committing to it and it was because of what he had done for this boy. He knew each of their lives were going to be better. He knew that he had made a real difference in the life of this student and that his guidance and sacrifice wouldn't be wasted. How many teachers get to really see how they can make such a huge difference in a student's life whom they may never see again? So much was conveyed in that handshake and their demeanor in that scene. I give this movie a solid 5 and I've already watched it more than once. Step aside, "It's a Wonderful Life", this one is THE Christmas movie I'll be watching every year. And BTW, that thing was an M-80, duh.
Working a second job is kind of a necessity for some folks, and teachers aren’t exactly well off, then or now. Her nice house could have been her parents’ home that she inherited or she just wanted the extra money.

Sideways is a masterpiece. Hilarious and heartbreaking, but not manipulative or hopeless.

The Mary character is the Hattie McDaniel mammy image which is imagery definitely better left in the past. Apparently the industry really likes this image as they keep awarding it. If anyone should have got the Oscar it should have been Dominic Sessa but I suppose there's a greater agenda at work which is probably why so many people lost respect for the academy decades ago. Also, the troubled "kid" is humanized, met with sympathy, and is supported and encourage by mostly all the adults. Lets make that a thing for ALL troubled kids.
The actress who plays Lydia was also the quirky lawyer Ilsbeth in The Good Fight.

I love this movie, and so far your review is spot on, but I do have to disagree with you guys on the scene with Joy Randolph's character in her sister's apartment because throughout the whole film, she has this box that she won't let anyone touch and she holds close to her. I figured it was her son's ashes, but in that scene in her sister's apartment, we find out that it's her son's clothes, and then she puts them in the drawer for her sister's baby. So it implies that she's moving on or trying to move on and the scene of her with her sister in the bed Joking is the first step of her moving on from the grief of losing her son. Anyway, that is what that scene meant to me. Maybe it's just because I am a parent myself, and that's how I understood that. But anyway, great review.

WONDERFUL film! Best I've seen in a long time. Nostalgic retro 70's feel (the story is set in 1970). One of Alexander Payne's very best..hope it becomes a new Christmas classic. The three lead actors excel. Paul Giamatti is brilliant and funny as curmudgeonly Barton prep school teacher Paul. Da'Vine Joy Randolph is smart and soulful as grieving mother Mary who lost her boy in Vietnam. Talented newcomer Dominic Sessa is perfect in every way as prep student Angus, abandoned by his mother over Christmas.
Thanks for your Fish Jelly review, with all the detailed story plot points - always enjoyable to hear you describe the story. I strongly feel the ending WAS important to the story though - Giamatti's Paul becomes a hero at the end, by heroically saving Angus from getting kicked out of Barton, and having to go to military school...which inevitably would lead Angus to Vietnam, and possibly cannon fodder. So in effect, Paul's unselfish action of protecting Angus, which cost Paul his job, changed the course of Angus' life, saving him from a tragic fate. Paul gave Angus a chance at a more positive, hopeful future. That was Paul's "hero's journey", so to speak.

in its favor it avoided the cliches of (1) the son stands up to his parents in big end scene and (2) Paul Giamatti discovers love ..

Update: They brought it back and I thought it was a good movie well acted but not particularly funny or great.

Sideways lite. The beginning was strong. It sagged afterward at the start of the holdover. The other kids dragged the movie down, straight out of movie of the week stock. The movie picked up after the departure of the other students. The movie meandered with the three leads but not as successfully as Sideways.

3:30 The actual premise of the movie is a fail. No mom would be so cold as to honeymoon with a new husband and leave her only son alone at Christmas. If that were true, a better premise would be a movie about the mom, as a villainess.
