Our adventure this weekend took us to Tellico Plains, TN. Tellico is one of our all time favorite areas to enjoy the majesty that TN has to offer in natural beauty. All of these campsites are dry camping, so don't even think about it unless you can cut that cord. Also know from the very start that the roads are tight and curvy. They are also pretty busy for back roads in the middle of nowhere. You will probably want to try to scout this one out ahead of time, to be sure you are comfortable in this type of situation. It will not be unusual for you to have to pull to the side of the road with no shoulder and a 10 ft drop into the river. You must be very confident in your driving abilities in order to go here. You also have to go slow and take your time. I will say that in comparison with the Citico Creek area, which is also in Tellico, there is a lot more space here on the River/N River areas. There is also a simplified map I made of the area at the end of the post.
Now if you are wanting to explore the area from a spot where you have some nice electrical hookups, there is only one real option in my book. That is Indian Boundary. During the wake of Covid 19 they have apparently changed their reservation policies though. Apparently, you can only book 60 days ahead of time. I have seen a lot of people that didn't like this very much. It is a nice campground and I liked almost everything there, except for the "You can't hang a hammock except in your paved parking pad" rule. However, Rules are rules. This is our video on our visit to Indian Boundary.
Now let's give you an overview of how to get you to the North River Campsites as well as go over what types of sites they offer in the area. In order to get to the North River you must take the Cherohala Skyway for 4.9 miles from town. (These mileages are from my truck which has a different size tire than factory, so it may very slightly.) Once you pass the Oosterneck Overlook you will see a sign stating to turn right to go to Bald River Falls. This is River Road (Also known as NF road 210) and will take you to multiple points of interest in the National Forest. The first left in 1/3 mile is ranger station road, the ranger station is closed for Covid, but they do have some information and maps out on the porch to assist you if need be. In 3.7 miles the road will look like it splits, this is Turkey Creek Rd that goes off to the left. You want to go right here. When in doubt in this area, always follow the river. In 5.8 miles you will get to Bald River Falls. If you've never been here before, you will definitely want to spend some time here and take some pictures. There is no parking for large rigs here, so if you have a trailer, you'll have to come back after setting up but it's definitely worth it. There is regular parking spaces just past the bridge.
You will then continue past the falls and the next thing that you will pass is the Baby Falls day use area. This will be 6.2 miles into your journey. Then in 7.4 miles you will pass Walnut Grove Picnic area on the right. I'm telling you everything you will pass, so that you will have reassurance you are on the right path, because it is a long ways and it is easy to second guess yourself. Then according to my truck in 9.1 miles (10 miles according to recreation.gov) you will get to North River Road on the left.
We are going to start our mileage over from the turnoff at N River Road. One important note about N River Road, is that if you go past the 6th dispersed campsite, there is nowhere to turn around. The road gets very narrow and continues up the mountain. The road does degrade a little here, and it is gravel mostly and not black topped like River Road. Overall, the road conditions usually aren't bad though. You may be more likely to have low hanging branches on N River road as well.
From here if you keep going your with find North River Campground and a total of 6 dispersed camping areas.

Man! You sure worked really hard on this video. I have never seen a video with such detailed instructions with each campsite. You did a terrific job. Thank you so much. I'm thinking of heading down into somewhere this week either to Tellico or Citico. I no longer have my little fiberglass travel trailer but I have a really nice Kodiak tent and I travel in a little Chevy Spark. The spark is low to the ground but hopefully if I'm careful I can maneuver the potholes. Again, thank you for your Superb video I really enjoyed it and have several people I'll share with. Keep up the good work I hope to run into you out there in the woods somewhere.

Thanks... I’m glad that the video helps. My wife took her Kia Optima to both of these areas without a problem. Overall the roads aren’t that bad. Thanks for the kind words.
