I looked up bands that used a lot of Mellotron and these guys came up. I became a massive fan from the first listen. Memories was actually the first song I listened to. This masterpiece was shortly after. I love Earth and Fire!

A great Dutch band which I liked very much in my teenage years.
Their songs are often quite bombastic combined with the beautiful voice of Jersey Kaagman. And of course we all had a crush on her.
    Maybe tomorrow, maybe tonight
    Wild and exiting
    Thanks for the love
The Dutch band Exeption also did interesting things.

It was a hit in 1971. Jerney Kaagman's magnificent voice is utterly beguiling. And she had the looks to match! After this album they made two more 'proggy' discs, Atlantis and To the World of the Future. Gradually they slipped into poppy and danceable fare - not bad at all, but not in the same league. Six months after this they had a number one hit with 'Memories'.

These lyrics describe a PERFECT picture of a Dutch hot summer day leading up to a thunderstorm late in the afternoon.
And this band , E&F, was 1 of the very best bands to ever come from the Netherlands. They have made many more very good songs very much worth listening to. Jerney did not only have a gorgious voice (nudge-nudge, wink-wink)

A buddy of mine on the Trainwreck is a total Earth And Fire fanatic. He sent me all of their music on two data discs. I gave them all a fair play, but in the end I only kept one song, "Twilight Dreamer". I really like that song. The only other song that I found interesting was "Ruby Is The One".
However, I do LOVE her voice. I just wish the music appealed to me more.
It's cool that you liked it so much. Discovering new music that moves you is wonderful.
There was a German prog rock band in the early '70s called Frumpy that you might find interesting. Inga Rumpf, the vocalist, has a powerful, raspy voice, but there have been too many Janis Joplin comparisons.

Hey Justin.😀 I'm very happy and thrilled you got to review this song. I've been the one droning away over here to get anyone to hear it. I stumbled upon this group about a year ago and knew they needed to be heard. So glad you enjoyed it. If you dare to try them again, a couple of songs from 1969 may be of interest. They are "Wild and Exciting" and "Seasons". Not as proggy as this song but both quite good tracks. Jerney's singing certainly gets "under your skin", doesn't it. If you can, they were on Beat Club playing this song so you can see them in action.

Earth and Fire was a great Dutch progband. They changed their sound several times, their debut Earth and Fire (which also was released with a Roger Dean cover) was more akin to the sound of Jefferson Airplane.
The Song of the Matching Children 1971 and Atlantis 1973 was Symphonic prog influenced by Genesis, whilst their later albums would go in a more disco/pop direction.
If you would do more of their songs I would recommend the Song of the Marching Children suite or Atlantis.

Hey, JP, thanks for doing this one. This album is my favourite of this band. Great song and voice. Being Dutch and in my teens at the time I followed them from the start (jersey was hot too!). The Koerts brothers were quite prog-minded. They wrote most of their albums. The first 4 albums are quite good. After that they went more pop and I did not follow them anymore. Another band you might like from the Netherlands is Kayak. Also with this band I prefer their earlier albums. They are a not so much full prog, but a lot of prog lovers like them. Quite some variation in type of songs. Somewhat similar as Queen perhaps (about the variation, all other comparisons fail ;-) ). The Last Encore and Merlin are my favourite albums but they scored hits with songs like Starlight Dancer, Phantom of the Night and Ruthless Queen. Their composer Ton Scherpenzeel used to play with Camel on keyboards in the eighties and nineties.

Jerney has an amazing pair of uhh... lungs on her. Their first three albums are all great. They kinda went a bit MOR/disco (yikes!) later on. I'd recommend a playthrough of either of their first two albums, or give Maybe Tomorrow, Maybe Tonight or Memories a spin. Jerney's voice on Memories is simply amazing!

Saw them twice, first in 1972 and then in 1973 in Germany when I was in the Dutch army.

As a Dutch of course this is close to home due to the band and the description of the summer weather over here. Hot, humid at times at least. Days starting somewhat damp and may be even cool. Fast rising temperature and the atmosphere just cannot contain all that energy and it just explodes in the evening with a lightning and who knows a tornado too...Unknown to in fact many many Dutch tornadoes are pretty common over here.
Midges are much much smaller than mosquitos and can be very irritating. They love humid weather.

Great that this song gets a recommendation from you and that it touches you. But really, you should be reviewing the ENTIRE ALBUM, because it's a concept album. Besides, the music is so damn well put together. Especially the B-side with the song "Song of the Marching Children" is worth a review alone. I would also like to draw your attention to the (concept) album 'Atlantis'. This album also tells a story.

As a Dutchman I know Earth and Fire of course. The city of The Hague was full of good bands, most famous Golden Earring. Their song Vanilla Queen (album Moontan) is not very well know, I just wonder if you ever heard it. Regards from (now) Philippines. Keep the good work going!

Interesting. Didn't think of Annie Haslam at first, untill you said it. Now I can't unhear it. But also, kind of reminds me of THE VIRGIN SUICIDES soundtrack by Air, that French, Pink Floydish sound...

Cool that you talked about this song Justin. Also notice how the mellotron subtle introduce the closing section theme. It's not pop, it's classical music.
I was a huge fan of the band in the seventies until they went into the eighties type of songwriting.
Gerard Koerts (twinbrother of guitarist Chris Koerts) unfortunately died two years ago as did some of their drummers. Gerards' Mellotron was their trademark imho, even in the more commercial successes like Memories, What difference does it make, Love of life (worth a listen, this last one).
Their first hitsingle 'Seasons' was written by George Kooijmans, famous guitarist of Golden Earring (Radar Love).
Van der Kleij is pronounced as van der Clay. :-)
Though Storm and thunder is one of the bands more known and succesful songs, I deeply recommend you to take a listen to the titletrack of the album 'To the world of the future'. Have a nice day!

Oh blimey, if Earth & Fire had been British they would have been huge (yes i know they were big in the Netherlands but they never made a splash in the UK).
As well as the Renaissance comparison, I also hear a bit of Curved Air in there, but not so gimmicky.
When needed they also were capable of Yes-like harmonies...check out their song Invitation...very Chris Squire type singing on that.
Btw another great Hard-Prog early 70s band fronted by a female singer, was Frumpy from Germany, with the great Inga Rumpf. Worth trying anything from their first two lp’s especially 👍
