Presumably because they are in a country that actually rehabilitates the majority of its criminal offenders and this sort of thing basically never happened since WW2. We can also presume they probably didn't know they had anyone so high up in what seems like a Mexican style cartel that will brazenly pull stuff like this in broad daylight or they'd have had him in an armored car with a full motorcade and a swat helicopter, etc, etc. Frankly I envy them.
Ffs, I remember this ex con was working in the same grocery store as me about twenty years ago. Never heard of anyone having any issues with him then one day after the fire alarm cleared the building (grease fires were not rare) instead of the Fire Dpt there was about twenty cop cars and FBI outside then a cluster of heavily armed ATF took him directly out of the building covered with flack jackets and put him in an armored car. I heard they drove him about a mile to the helipad of the nearest hospital and I'd assume on to witness protection or something. Apparently the haggling portion of a lot of very large meth/guns deals if not the exchanges were happening behind the counter by the salad bar for some time. Who knew 🤷‍♂️

There were only 2 armed police escorting the prisoners. Notice how many attackers were there and all of them had automatic sub guns or pistols despite France having strict gun control. The car behind the escorting police van had attackers that came from the rear. They basically mobbed the police with numbers and firepower. The two police officers went down before they realized there were guys shooting them from behind.

An average American can own an RPG...I'm confused on your comment, I've seen youtubers who post vids on weapon etc and they even show them with RPG. This is in the US as well.

      Attorney client privilege.
Edit: guys like this have attorneys on a retainer. Attorneys that are on retainer know what their clients do, even though they will never admit it.

*The car full of men in black hoods drove straight at them and rammed their van blocking it in. Since their van wasnt bulletproofed, why weren't they out with weapons drawn and aimed, ready for something? If you put most people in a uniform they would know to do that even with ZERO training as an officer.*

All THAT for a middle level drug trafficker? I don't think so. Either he was connected to something much larger or to some states intelligence service needed him not to ve in custody, mid level druggies don't do stuff like this and succeed. Well trained agents of state actors do, or posdibly ex special forces who are offered a LOT of money like los Zetas in Mexico.
I wonder if he will be spirited out of France to retirement or put in a shallow grave full of quicklime?
