Miles Hayford No, relevance is about the now. Who's more iconic? We'll have to wait, but Kanye is in the news and the modern conversation much more than Shakespeare.

    • @Lucky7sDN
      @Lucky7sDN Před 7 lety +14

RADubs: Well its both; Relevance is not only your impact on the now but how long that impact echoes through time. And we have way more time to measure Shakespeare's reach than Kanye. Sure, Yeezy is in the news more but the news is by nature more focused on the ephemeral aspects of our culture. As for the "modern conversation", you have to be more specific. What conversation? Shakespeare has impacted the way conversations happen to begin with. The words/phrases that he conjured and wrote over a millennia ago still get uttered by people today more so than Kanye lyrics. His ideas and themes have been re-immortalized and reused time and time again. The Lion King? The stories he told set a framework that we still use. We still name our children after names he first invoked like Jessica. I like Kanye, but Shakespeare is on another level, admittedly because of the time he lived in but that only makes the question weirder to ask.

    Template for succeeding in Hollywood:
    1. Steal other people’s work such as movies or music and put it together and market it as your own.
    2. Tell people that it’s yours and they’ll believe it. Tap into their mind by talking about confidence, self acceptance of their looks etc. using words of old philosophers and/or writers and re-framing them into your own, in a country full of financially enslaved people looking for inspiration.
    3. Have a fake personality = diva / crazy etc. so people actually believe you’re different and a genius etc. but you’re not. Keep this up when the cameras are around you.
    4. Set up a TV show or any media platform, make everything fake and sell your fake personality, strategically planned with events e.g. birth, work releases etc. Any kind of scandal helps!
    5. Pay paparazzi to take pictures of you and put you on the news papers. This causes a psychological effect of importance in humans. Make sure you’re seen pictured with so called “important people” too.
    6. Make sure your social media followers are really high, so pay bots (50% + need to be fake), with the comments being limited so it’s seems people care about your profile (another psychological effect on humans), as well as fake likes, and slightly photoshopped pictures to achieve unattainable goals.
    7. Make money by selling a product or service (it doesn’t have to work, based on point 6.) and become a billionaire with it in assets, even though it might not be liquid and you only have royalties etc. people will believe it anyway because it’s all psychological. Make sure you say ‘it’s sold out’ so it looks like people are buying it.
    8. Go on the media again, and talk about how successful you’ve been etc. and inspire younger uninformed generations with quotes that have been used for decades. Make sure you’re posted on news registers for rich people. Most of the world’s richest decline to be on them.

Interesting how for example he talks about the swagger of Kanye West. Ironically swagger is a term first recorded in Shakespeare's work. As many others are. To me the fact it actively takes effort to speak for longer than 2 minutes without using something coined or inspired by Shakespeare is the only argument needed to demonstrate his timeless relevance. Kanye isn't even close.
Edit: I was trying to be clever and literally 30 seconds after I unpause he explains that was his point and argument.

This fellow is really interesting. I haven't seen an intellectual debate on these Oxford videos for a while where they stayed on point and used relevant examples. Since Relevant is referring to how it impact everyone universally. Positive or negative I can agree that Shakespeare is seen everywhere and used in all forms of life. The only way I see Kanye being part of every aspect more than the rap / pop culture is his wife and how they are reality TV. Shakespeare is about life and is for life where Kanye seems to be about himself.

Shakespeare was never the peoples champ. Yes his works were very popular among the people, he was never one of them. It's sort of like Stanely Kubrick. Yes many people are inspired by him, but Kubrick was NOT one of the people, that's why he could make works for them. There's clarity from the outside looking in you can never get from the inside.

I feel sorry for English literature and humanity basically when Kanye West, being the famous millionaire grammy winning rapper, producer and fashion designer he is nonetheless nothing absolutely nothing compared to the literary genius and the greatest playwright in the English language, whose works are the most published, read and studied second probably only to the bible, who life's works have relevant on social, political, cultural issues, is relevant and will be relevant as future generations learn about his valuable contributions to the English language, literature, culture, drama/plays/theatre and vocabulary. For example, take the popular slang word swag which originates from the word swagger, invented by Shakespeare

The question is who is more relevant, not who is more influential. Still, Kanye is more relevant to black folks, and those who aren't a part of the Oxford Union. I've consumed and enjoyed more of Kanye's work than I'm even interested in Shakespeare. (This is despite my gripes with his personality and reactions at times.) Besides, this is all relative! We don't know how much of an asshole Shakespeare could have been, personally. I'm pretty sure it was a lot easier for a white guy to be prolific 400 years ago than it is for a black man to be influential, original, and relevant today. Maybe we won't know how "relevant" he is until he passes. Historical figures always seem to get higher favor over living/relevant ones.✊🏾

Shakespeare created a precedent. Kanye West is just an average pop/rap star. The media fuels our vain and vacuous culture, and his "celebrity" largely works in tandem with that. his popularity isn't reflective of much in the 21st century, granted he will be immortalized as a pop icon. As of now he isn't a tragic figure, like a cobain, or pac. It's sad, but tragedy would add some weight to his temperament which would in the long run help substantiate him in the annals of history. But for the most part his relevancy, as it is, exists in our cult like worship of celebrity culture.
How exactly was it easier 500 years ago for a white guy to be more prolific than a black man today? Yea I guess if you were able to come up with anything back then it might seem prolific. But think about life and culture 500 years ago. Nowadays potential is endless. Anyone with wifi has the ability to reach millions instantly. The potential for something prolific to reach the masses is much easier than 500 years ago, and for it to survive through the ages. Maybe less competition made it easier, but if it's prolific, then competition wouldn't really matter.

If you think Kanye is an average pop/rap star then you obviously haven't listened to his work.
