You did a great job on this video. If you need a new MacBook now, buy it -- that's what I did, MBAir M1. If you have one that's working for you, wait for the m1x or m2 coming soon. You made a good case for hanging in there.

Absolutely! It’s awesome. It’s amazing that Apple is actually offering a laptop for $1000 that’s top tier

Yeah. My pro 2017 throttles like crazy and that just digs the hole deeper. I wish I could wait for fall

I get the backlash for criticizing the M1 devices. People get attached to technology. However, I feel like you’re holding the Air up to a very high, arguably unfair, standard. Being disappointed that it can’t completely dominate a pro-level device, even an older one, is a high bar for a thousand dollar Ultrabook with only 8Gbs of RAM. It doesn’t even have a fan and you really didn’t take into consideration that fact or throttling, which does happen even with the M1.

I hear you and appreciate the feedback. I saw many videos comparing these m1s to last years MacBook pros and they faired pretty well. So I bought the air because the only difference between the pro and air was the fan and from the videos I saw, it only made a difference when doing something intense for like 7 or more minutes. And even then it was about 80% as good at those tasks.
This video was to answer a different question - how does this air compare to a 4 year old MacBook Pro. I think a lot of people are like me and wondering if now is the time to upgrade their older machine or if they should wait a little more.
M1 is awesome and I think that’s clear in my testing, but I was surprised how little that extra power made a difference in hours of testing and so I wanted to get the word out. It may seem unfair to compare a air to a pro, but that’s what consumers do all the time - what can they get away with? No?

Yeah, that’s true. I think a lot of people are wondering if they can get away with only spending a grand on a device that can do professional/intensive work versus spending two grand or more for a beefier machine. I’m in that boat myself. It’s a shame the M1 Air was kind of a bust for you though. Maybe the MacBook Pro M1 would’ve been a little better but only by a small margin.

I genuinely hated the m1 MacBook Air, found it that lagged tons, when trying to use the abobe programs plus using google docs and kajabi. So I am a fan of the MacBook Pro quad-core i7

Exports will depend heavily on whether the effects need gpu power to render. Heavy denoising etc can create very long render times on the m1 chips.

I have an option to buy a i7 Macbook Pro 15' with 16 GB of ram, and 512 SSD, or a base model M1 MacBook Air. What should I chose? I am a Software Engineering student :)

Thanks for watching the whole video. I think they’re great too, it’s just side by side with the apps that matter to me, the difference was mild. I think they’re great machines though.

You kinda forget you are comparing macbook AIR to macbook PRO. The old macbook airs are shitty, no comparison there, that's why you chose to compare it to the pro. Btw the benchmarks I saw showed exactly what you saw as performance - they are very close.
Also, you should not care that much about criticism or at least explain yourself (and make it very short) without whining, it leaves a bad taste after an otherwise very honest and helpful video.

Yea, I have one of these and despite being flimsy, they're pretty good. Of course, they aren't power house machines. They're nothing compared to my desktop. They're closer to my 7 year old gaming laptop in terms of power. I think there are people expecting miracles.

Finally, someone who's honest and not paid to just rave about these m1 macs and leave out the bad stuff. Personally, I upgraded from a 2012 mac mini and 2011 macbook air to the m1 macbook pro and yes the difference was huge for me. However, my dad has a 2015 imac and guess what? Under normal use like watching youtube and web browsing, the difference is very small between my m1 macbook pro and that. The big difference only starts to show between the m1 and the 2015 imac in intensive stuff like cinebench or blender render, where the m1 dominates the 2015 imac. For sure, yes, I would have loved to see the m1 macbook pro added into this comparison, and I'm sure especially in those longer tests, it would have done a little better, but I agree about you that the macbook air is the macbook se. It has like 87 percent of the performance of the pro for much less. I'm going to hold onto my m1 macbook pro for now. I was originally considering selling it and trading up to a m1x later this year but based on my financial situation right now I'm extremely unlikely to do that and will probably just get an m2x or m3x in 2022 or 2023. Also, if I'm pushing the cpu and gpu at the same time, guess what? The fan goes full blast on my m1 macbook pro? So I would love to see tasks where the cpu and gpu is utilized at the same time on the m1 macbook air and compare it to the m1 macbook pro. That's definitely something the reviewers leave out. If you push the thing it's gonna get hot, it's just the laws of physics . However, under light load and most tasks, it stays very cool. Overall, if your mac is under 5 years old and it's doing what you need it to do, then it's not worth your while to upgrade yet. Anyhow, sorry for the long comment, great video, and keep up the great work!

4 year old MBP means you're ok with the butterfly keyboard? Keyboard change was enough of a reason for a change for me! Typing on a proper mac keyboard is somehow really liberating after 4 years of struggling with the bad, bad, bad butterfly keyboard. Also, isn't this just the money thing? You've reviewed it, now you just needed some bogus reasons to return it and (of course) make a story for a youtube video. Sounds like this to me :-) Also, enjoy your dislikes ;-)

    • @TheSearchForAwesome
      @TheSearchForAwesome  Před 3 lety

I don't mind the keyboard tbh. I'm typing on it right now - but that's a good point because a lot of people hate it as you said.
I don't really appreciate the accusation tbh. As mentioned in the first part of the video, I was trying to make a video about why the M1 crushes a 4 year old macbook pro and encourage people to switch. But as I was testing, the benchmarks were way different - M1 crushed. But it didn't translate into much of a real world performance improvement. I have a 30 minute video that condenses hours of testing I did with a variety of apps you can watch for yourself if you don't believe me.
My stance on this hasn't changed - if you want a new Mac right now - get a M1 air. It's the best value IMO. If you have one that still works pretty well, it probably doesn't make sense to upgrade at this point for a performance reason. The keyboard, battery life, etc. might be good enough for some people, but not me.
I hope you love your M1 - it's a great machine. I'm really excited about how Apple Silicon shakes out. M1X or M2 should be even more insane.
