- In this I show a quick trick to set timing on a 2002 Sentra without removing the lower cover. Without removing the harmonic balancer and not buying a new chain.
I did not show how to do the tensioner but that is super simple anyway.

Not lazy......knowledgeable.
Genius approach.
Malachi, you are a genius. I watched this and found it so hilarious that I watched it about another 5 times without realizing that the answer that I was looking for was contained within. 👍👍👍
Five seconds in and I'm already a fan.
for the record.... engine ran perfect after I was done.
lets see if this works on the qr25de :/
Even better way to be sure cylinder number 1 is on TDC is to use a length of threaded rod the same thread as the spark plug hole. First use a long screwdriver and push it all the way down as after you have rotated the crankshaft so its at approximatley TDC on cylinders 1&4 . At that time its also on BDC ( bottom dead centre on cylinders 2 & 3. GENTLY wind the treaded rod down till it GENTLY touches the top of the cylinder 2 or 3 piston. Rock the crankshaft GENTLY back and forth as you GENTLY wind the small reamining length of the threaded rod down till the crank can no longer rock back and forth. now you are at BDC on cylinders 2&3. On this type of motor ( and indeed any other flat plane in line fours with cylinders 1&4 that are 180 degrees away from cylinders 2&3. Not only have you found TDC on cylinders 1 & 4 but you now have the crank locked so that it cant move away from TDC 1&4 whilst you are installing the camshafts. obviously you then remove the threaded rod before you attempt to rotate the motor to check free rotation and your valve timing.
Basically just line up the crank tdc. Dissasemble the head. Hold the chain up with a wire or zip ties. Make sure cam sprockets are in time with the chain, crank tdc and torque the head. Reassemble, vroom vroom we have compretion, lazy boys whoooooo.
Ahh yes, I was hoping someone would mention this method. Ziptie the chain to the mounting frame between the head and the cover after its set to TDC. Makes putting it back together so much easier. At least that's how I was able to do it on the Nissan 2.5L.
Shade tree Mechanic... Love it
Very clear and understandable with 13 30 34 very simple judo's
Love that tool box setup bro!
I have a 2001 and it was 13 - 30 - 32 (with tighted chain)
Brutha😉😉😉😉
Thanks!!!! You said 7times? For me 3s a charm thank you!!
Im down to this point with my 04 Sentra. Good compression all cylinders, all new plugs and coils, new fuel pump, new injectors, still getting p0300 plus several others. Im starting to think bad timing chain. All started when I hit a rumble bar and the engine just died, misfired and ran like crap after it.
I changed a crank sensor after having to get it towed home after a five min run to store changed crank sensor now i got po300 but it runs just drives like shit now i doubt its the crank sensor again im about ready to pop that valve cover off n see what i can see
Very good job ,I took everything apart but accidentally dropped four valve buckets before marked them. I put them back but not sure if each one went back in the right place then I marked them . Is this okay . Think you
I am pretty sure those cars have hydraulic lifters....you can mix and match. No problem.
Very usefull video
30 13 34 is wrong. I have a P0335 code coming up after doing the timing with those numbers. Every timing chain photo I seen on Google and rockauto was 30 12 35 so I thought I'll give that a try and that fixed my issue. Not saying it didn't work for you but in my case 30 12 35 was the right one
I going to do my 1.8 this week as blowing bubbles in radiator and loosing coolant and very hot air out exhaust.
Hoping it's just a gasket.
What torque wrench settings did you finish with?
I forget.... I think it was a value....then a certain degree afterwords. You can google the values. If you use my method, please be careful. It is easy to get wrong if you do not understand all the things happening and that you are doing. Took me over an hour of tries before I got it set right.
Bravo...I was thinking how you were gonna count the links with that cover in place...$3,500 scope they check sphinkters with...lol?!!! Ok..my heads outta that...😁
love your vids bro!! can you give me a list of what to remove to pull the cylinder head off the easiest way
I wish I remembered. I did this a couple years ago and have not done this same engine again. Sorry.

Sir I replaced my timing kit 3 months ago, and it was fine, but now there is a chain like sound on the side of the pilot, which appears when i'm driving, but when im on STOP, and i accelerate, the sound doesn't pop up, what do you think it could be Sir? Thank you
bad chain guides? Or tensioner?
Hi great video! In hopes that you are still replying to comments, I have a question: I pulled the head off an 02 1.8, forgot to make marks on the chain, ended up breaking the intake cam, ordered a new one and installed them without the marks. I had a feeling that I was off by a link or two and now - with engine fully assembled - she starts but dies almost immediately after sputtering and shuddering...does that sound like the timing? Thank you for your time!
Nathaniel Davidson it very likely is out of time. At this point is pull the whole thing apart and check. Sucks..... but if that's what it is you gotta do it.
ykmalachi yea, it sure was...this vid helped me immensely - I've been reading through countless forums (most of them just hand out snippets taken from the manual), and with only a limited set of tools I just wasn't comfortable taking off the front cover. The exhaust cam position is what REALLY helped out because I had no marks. Thanks again!
Question. So my brother was doing my spark plugs and he messed up. You know how you took the cover off and you saw the metal Pieces that surround the spark plug? What is that called and can that be removed?
The spark plug tubes? Yes they can be gotten from a salvage year engine. Just be ultra careful to not bend them out of round removing. They should just be pressed into place.
ykmalachi ok how's the proper way to remove them and put them back together?
I'd try large channel locks. Wrap a belt round them and grip firmly without crushing. Twisting them back and forth til they loosen and pop out. I'd insert them with a block of wood and an hammer

Any link count on the 2.5l engine? My chain marks came off due to the oil while the head was off being resurfaced.
nope. All you can do is tear down the lower half and do the full job.
How do you remove the camshafts on this motor. Removed the time tensioner and everything and still cant remove the camshafts
JimmyEG1 once all the caps are out they should just lift out
ykmalachi with or without the chain?
I removed the chain to remove the sprockets which let me get the cam shafts out. I did this a year ago and don't really remember much about the job.
I know this is late but hold the cam still w/a wrench (24mm I think) while turning the sprocket bolt.
Did you drop the oil pan and motor mount?
Nope. Left it all in place
Going to give it a try Saturday. Thanks, Maybe shoot a video just to post.

Timing chain
LOL hell yea ... 😁👌🏾
got an 09 sentra..loud tick, borderline knock(thought car was fucked) when in park..engage it into gear and it goes away until you give it throttle..could this be a timing chain issue?
Possible. Also, check torque converter bolts being loose. But chains rarely knock. They rattle.
@@ykmalachi i was convinced the car was fucked until i started it one day and she sounded like she was ready to drive to california..i guess it could be considered a loud tick/rattle
nice fucking video bro!!
What did yall charge
Just the average price for a head gasket in my area
How come I keep seeing 12 links between the 2 cam gears on google
Do not know. Just know what worked for me.
how much to have a Nissan dealership replace chain?
WillJay8130 I am not sure. Ball parking it though I'd guess $900. only a guess and I could be way off.
ykmalachi is it 900 up front?
I don't know.... I'm not a dealership. They may quote much higher or lower. I'm just guessing at the cost.
i appreciate the video, Malachi. You got to consider your language. Every idle word men shall speak they shall give an account thereof on the day of judgement. Get right with God.I want you to be my neighbor in heaven.
Nah. I'm good. I am not into magical thinking.

If you would stop the cussing you would have had a 5 star video.
Fuck man.... sorry about that
how to take the damn head off!?? what bolts on there u unfastening
This was over a year ago.... I really don't remember.
There's only like 8 right on the sides of the head, damage your head gasket your fkd tho so be careful.
At 2:00 you can see exactly where the bolts came out, also remember to put each bolt were u got it from. go around like clockwise and lay the bolts accordingly then when you put them back should be easy.
bueno no se inglish
Why the bad language? Unnecessary.
Fuck dude...... I am so fucking sorry. I promise to get my shit together
@@ykmalachi thats fucking funny....
