  • Faulty connections CEM module in Volvo V50, S40, C30 and GEM module in Ford Focus MK2 can cause problems with communication between electronic components of your car. Most common issues are airbags warning, traction control warning, no control over wipers and central lock, engine turning off by itself, ignition problems (immobilizer warning). Other messages and warnings can appear on the instrument cluster as well. Check how to fix faulty connections between modules in your car, bring it back to life and reset warnings: "Immobilizer see manual", "anti-skid temporarily off", "anti-skid service required", "srs airbag service urgent".

I want to give this video a good thumbs-up x10000 and stick in on the first page of CZcams.
Here is my story. I have had weird electronic issues for the past 4 years of owning this vehicle. Some of them really annoying and even game-breaking, others no so much. When I first cleaned and re-attached my outside temp sensor and it started functioning properly, many of the faults disappeared but some of them remained. Difficulties to start engine, random errors on dash such as anti-skid temporarily off, anti-skid service required, ABS failure, traction control fault, radio and A/C acting up, windows not working properly. I did not give it so much attention as I should have at that time since all errors disappeared once engine started and others were not as bothersome.
All that to a point where my car would just not start anymore. Happened last sunday, was driving normally for two days and 600 kms and when I took a break to quickly wash major dirt off car, it would not start at all. Tried cranking till battery died. Towed back to home, recharged battery and tried again, no positive result. Engine was cranking but not starting. Took apart throttle body, cleaned everything, double cleaned all sensors and checked if everything was in order. No result. Was ready to go and get new FPR and even thought about having blown fuel pump. By accident I happened to check your channel and look through your videos when I found this. Having nothing to loose and symptoms similar to what you mentioned (adding those that have been occurring for past years) and nothing else I could do at that point of time, I took that crap apart, cleaned everything and put it back together.
Not only did it get my engine to start again, it fixed everything that has been wrong with it for whole time and car starts so much better than before.
Many thanks from Estonia, my friend, and god bless you for doing what you are doing! World needs more people like you!

Wow. My 2007 S40 had been having electronic throttle issues and showing the red triangle and "ENGINE SERVICE URGENT" message for weeks. This (along with cleaning the connector at the accelerator pedal) has solved the problem for over a week now. I love solutions that cost only time and effort! Thank you!

I just want to say thanks for making this video. My daughter came home in her 2006 S40 last night and complained about multiple issues that occurred all at the same time. The car was working fine the day before. Some of the items were: power windows and door locks not working, wipers wouldn't turn off or change speed, gas gauge not working, speedometer not working, SRS (airbag) error shown on dash, etc ... Obviously it had to be something related to the computer system since so many systems weer effected. This evening, I spent about 1 hour following the instructions on your video. After putting everything back together, the error messages were gone and all the systems worked again. I don't know if it will last forever, since the car has had some alarm system issues recently as well but we'll see. At least we were able to get the windows closed, since they had been stuck in the down position. Thanks again.

If you have an older Volvo and you're getting electronic problems, issues, and cryptic bulshit warning messages popping up on your Dash, then this is your likely solution. I had every issue listed here including brake warning light, pedal sensor, all gauges stopped working, check engine light, P0171, p0240, immobilizer warning, and at least 15 other warnings on my car when it started jerking around on the highway. Cleaned the CEM and every single one of them is gone. Including the check engine light. No codes and run smooth

My 2005 Volvo t5 v50 AWD suddenly started having multiple electrical problems: wipers stuck on, no turn signals, loss of window function, loss of lock function, alarm set off while opening hood, and gas guage failure. Cleaned with no contact cleaner safe for plastic, nylon brush, blew it out like a Nintendo cartridge and presto! Everything works again!

I have the V50 2010 model and have had power issues with it which haven't been able to short , no fault codes showing , but just this last week had reduced engine power dash light on and it wouldn't rev beyond 3000 revs , cut out quite a few time , apparently its too do with the E C U , but not certain , it's going in next week for a proper diagnostic check, so fingers xd. Depending on the cost I'll be looking for a petrol engine car again , it's cost me a lot up to now over 7 years of ownership, trouble is I like the car style wise and practicality.

Most importantly this procedure completely fixed this problem on my 2010 Volvo V50, probably saving many hundreds of dollars in unnecessary parts and labor at a repair shop. Thanks. I have done this this afternoon. Good tip to take top connectors off first. I have cleaned all mine on a 2005 V50. It all looked clean, but you can't be sure. I used lots of fluid, so I am leaving over night to ensure it all dries including any residue. I pray it works again. It is very difficult working in this footwell. It would be easier for those who have a lift and can stand up to get to this unit. If after this my car still has issues, I think I will sell it as spares. It is 15 years old now, and not worth the money on even a refurb unit... I hope this will not be necessary!

You may be my saviour! I have bought my V50 less than 2 weeks ago and really like the car but today it stranded me with no warning signs before this. I bought from a dealer and had it checked at a independent garage before purchase and got a 3 month warranty for engine and gearbox only. The issue emerged after a 1 min drive to the local shop. Came back out of said shop tried to go home and “2 new messages” appeared “Anti skid service required” and “immobiliser, try start again”. I tried to start and no crank or anything happened. Tried locking and unlocking doors and such for a few mins and 20 turns of ignition = nothing. Then the messages went away,it attempted to start and did start for about 5 seconds on very low rpm, 200 maybe then cut out and messages reappeared. Tried to start it again several hours later and messages were gone for first 2 or 3 attempts to start but it would not start and check engine light was lit up. Going to try this tomorrow. I am a complete amateur at this but your video is excellently detailed and it appears to just be a thorough cleaning and reconnect things job which might save my broke ass 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

Hi. Just came across this and I will do this cleaning since the cem is removed now. We thought it was the key not registered in the cem any longer but the key still remote locks and engages the alarm system. So it's just starting thats an issue with a message "start prevented try again" and the other messages are showing occasionally, the srs air bag message and anti skid shows up at times. It just hasn't started for 2 months now and I've been checking so many things from starter solenoid, relays and fuses in the engine bay fuse box, fuses in the drivers side between door and dashboard and those at the cem. So wish me luck. I'll try and let you know

Thanks for the info. I did this. Had similar problems. The car also didn't start. Just cleaning the pins on the gem unit did not work unfortunately. Then I thought to open the whole unit to see the circuitboards. Around one of the connectorpins was a corrosive black damp mess. I cleaned it with lots of alcohol based Kontakt spray. Not the oily stuff. Then used some cotton swabs and a brush. There had clearly been a short circuit there. The solderpoints where almost gone. I didn't solder them again. When dry I put it back in the car and all fault codes where gone an the car started. So this non-starting happened while driving through snowy weather with lots of snow on the low part of the front windowscreen. I think the warm engine melted the snow and it somehow dripped exactly on the unit under the dashboard. I might add a plastic cover to the unit and always clean all snow and leaves from the front window drains.

You also need to check the windscreen. A common problem for the volvo is that the windscreen adhesive fails, which allows water to enter the footwell. The carpet needs to be removed to fully dry as there's foam insulation adhered to the underside of the carpet which holds the water. If the windscreen is not replaced and the car is not dried the fault will reapear.

I removed the battery, and when put it back on, the remote control worked for a week and then stopped working again. Would cleaning the GEM help in this case?

There are two main sources: sun roof drain in A-pillar and A/C drain in the passengers footrest. Then, when you heat up your car it will evaporate and condensate on the CEM/GEM.
