I'm beyond exhausted with the academy players convo. Every year for the last decade our fans have gone into meltdown about academy players leaving. Question...how many of these players have gone on to become world class or even good enough to start for our first team? None! Yes we can do better in getting value for these players but it isn't the end of the world. Relax. The reality is that the quality of players coming out of our academy simply isn't good enough. Saka and Smith-Rowe are the exception, not the norm.
The conversation should be about raising the standards and quality at the academy.
Yeah, I've been a fan since 2010, and Saka is the only academy player I've seen truly become world class during that time.
Statistically only 0.5% of players that join at 9 years old make it to the 1st team and that is really 1 in 200 assets. I am not worried at all with this question of progression and even with Nwaneri, Max, MLS perhaps none of them will actually break into the 1st team sustainably. Perhaps the question is how to re-model that step-up from academy to senior player for more of a success of these players. The team that cracks that Gordian knot will sit pretty.
Hutchinson went for 20, right out of our pocket and into Chelseas, now it's United. It's disgraceful.

PSR is adds a new dimension when it comes to losing talent for free, but completely agree that the quality of graduate is most important and they have been falling short in recent years.
I think you guys are missing something important here. The market has been a lot slower and Mikel has talked about this directly that basically all clubs are being more cautious this summer due to FFP laws and profit and sustainability laws. That means we are less likely to see Declan Rice level signings not just from Arsenal but from any team.

Players were always going to move late in this window. Things have only started moving this week. I still think we we get 4 players. Things are just very quiet coming out of the club, I feel FFP is playing a part and clubs are waiting for a few players prices to come down. I will worry last week of august if its still like this but most windows we get a player or two early then a luul and something happens late. we have this same conversation every year. we always want more than we get but I feel they want to invest this summer so I am chill.

I think we need to appreciate the Kronke’s have backed Arteta to the max of PSR. The squad is now way too bloated and we really need to sell, I assure you if sales go out through the door we’ll start to see signings. It’s also a Euros and COPA year so it will naturally be slow. As Mikel says, Calma!
There are more fixtures this season also with the expanded CL format and the need put on Mikel to be more serious about the domestic cup competition efforts.
It isn’t just Merino and Calafiori anyway, we are on standby for Nico Williams and presumably will go in for someone else if he is closed off. The issue in general perhaps is fans were wanting a premium buy at CM and/or CF and that is not happening. They don’t see Merino as a Bruno G signing.

When a machine is making rattling noises, and all the parts aren't moving properly as expected, sometimes it could just be a loose bolt somewhere and doesn't require the whole parts to be replaced. We have had a loose bolt in our squad since Xhaka left. It caused our whole left side dynamic to suffer last season. And Merino is that fix I think, tightening that bolt and making all the parts function properly. I think it will be very clever signing, full of experience, balance and calmness.

I get the sentiment, but this does all feel premature, especially given the general lack of marquee signings that are happening. And I think the last few summers have shown us that Arsenal do get business done.

To put it simply for me, you raise the floor of the squad by singing a striker who’s better than eddie, and a winger who’s better than reiss.
You raise the ceiling of the squad by bringing in the perfect CM to replace Xhaka. I’d prefer to take an attacking 8/10 to dovetail with Odergaard and keep Rice as a 6. But I’d also potentially take a more traditional box to box type like Bruno G.
I think the LCM role is now the key to improving this team because Gabriel, Saliba, White, Saka, Nelli, Rice, Odergaard are solid starters. Calafiori/Timber/Tomi add to that, same with Partey and Jorginho. So we have depth in defence and 6. We’re screaming out for a LCM with some creativity, ball carrying and playmaking capabilities.
An ideal window for me would be something like
In: Calafiori, Eze/Gibbs-White, Merino, Williams/Neto, Solanke?/Ferguson?/Gyokores?
Out: (Lokonga, Tavares) Nketiah, Smith-Rowe, Nelson, Zinchenko, Partey,

The problem with us is that we are always mediocratic in our approach, we as fans knows we need at least one level raiser, unfortunately we have a manager who thinks he could turn water into wine and a very conservative board afraid of moving the needle.
Euros finished 10 days ago and people already assuming two transfers is it. Remember Summer 2021 guys - we brought in Tomi, Ramsdale, White, Odegaard etc at the end of August.

Genuine question re: Chido, are we even sure he’s gonna be better than Nicklas Bendtner? Lord was at least banging in double digit goals in the Championship at 18 so do we think Chido is gonna do the same in 2 years? Guy is crazy good at the u18 level but he’s got a long way to go to reach even Bendtner lvls
Also, it's not like arsenal didn't recognize the talent chido has, they did and they offered him a massive contract and really tried to keep him, so they are aware and they did try it's just for this specific player it didn't happen. Plus I don't think arsenal felt these other youngsters were good enough and worth keeping.

Would Eze represent an X factor type player for you or does it has to be a forward ? I.e. Williams or Neto.
For me we needed 2 CMs, and 2 attackers. I can see why we’ve singed Calafiori but I think we fall short in midfield. You take Odegaard out and we have no creative or attacking outlets.
Someone like Eze addresses that as well as potentially providing a back up option for Saka.
Same with Gibbs-White.
Both of those players add goals and assists to our midfield and create opportunities for others with their ball carrying which is their ‘super power’.
We are missing a quality creative ball carrying profile in midfield and I don’t think Moreno addresses that. Merino is only something I’d consider if Partey leaves but if Partey stays and we’re hedging out bets on his fitness then he has to be a starter.

100 percent. I think we need to address also that we lack pace in squad. If were going to do anything in the champions leauge were going to need pace on the break
Disagree with your last comment- under almost any circumstances does Partey start until the last part of the season. He should be in almost permanent cotton wool off the bench. No African competition either. Then we might get some elite performances when the biggest games are on in March to May

forced. Haven't heard you mention that market differs from non Euro/WC summer. Trossard and Jorginho are very much x factors for their price. Maybe board realised that in longer perspective transfers like Merino for 25m are healthier (gives you a room to go again and again, retain a contender's campaign) than transfers like Onana for 60m, giving they are pretty much the same player.
I agree we need a Turning point player to change the vibe and get over it. Currently linkwd players are Meh.
At the end of the season, Arteta and the players told the fans to expect big things from them next season.
The intent in the window so far doesn't match what we're being told and I'm a little worried.

@@alekseifedorov949 We were near enough perfect tactically for a lot of the season and it still wasn't enough because we miss certain things in certain game states.
This can be fixed through recruitment but we have to nail it because there is a lot of pressure on us to win something next season and I don't feel like we've done enough to address our issues in the window so far, things can change of course.

The season starts in ~3 weeks, on August 17th. Anyone we sign now is probably missing the start of the season and certainly missing the bulk of preseason.
We're starting the season with a weaker squad than last season.
At hale end there's a plack engraved with every academy debutant...in the last 5 yrs only 5 names have been added to that list. That's not normal or comparable to City or Liverpool for instance.
When you sign a scholarship you sign, not just based on what the club tell you, but based on what they show you.
I'm not suggesting these young players are all good enough to play at the top level but giving 2 mins here and there in dead rubber games can do so much to signal to other youth players that there is a chance for them whilst continously naming players like Walters and Omari Hutchinson on the bench for 20 + games probably does more harm than good. What you signal to young players is everything because they live off hope. We nned to change the preception of the academy players by either finding odd mins, even in pre-season, finding loans - rather than keeping them to make up numbers on the bench. This signals to them that we care about their development and to intersted teams that we trust their talent.

With the current links to transfers options available to us in the market and the gap in what we need to address the box efficiency the best options available are Joan Garcia (2nd choice GK), Riccardo Calafiori (Left Back/ Left Centre Back), Mikel Merino (Left Midfield) ,Adrien Rabiot (Left Midfield)(Free Transfer), Nico Williams or Pedro Neto (in that order) and Viktor Gyokeres. I am sure with the right outgoings the above would be affordable yet also address the extra points need to gain a PL title and even the compete for Champions League.

I'll be very honest with you guys. You make a lot of stupid statements like, "we are not far away from City", "Merino and Calafiori window". What are you smoking honestly? We shouldn't be trying to get to City's level, we should be trying to blow them out of the water. E.g. out to in transfers like ESR for Doue, Kiwior for Calafiori, Trossard for Nico Williams, Nketiah for Gyokeres, Zinchenko for Hato. We are VERY far away. Watch and see.
I DO NOT understand how we are having a net spend neutral window when we're this close! Where is the ambition. Mikel just deferred to the board about transfers so I don't think he's happy. He's the winner. I fear the club is returning to "good enough" not high ambitions. When this close you gotta push hard to go to the next level
In Short, you can have 1billion but you cannot force to buy player if the other team don't want to.. some arsenal fans are just cry baby and reactive.. Arsenal could win the league, and they would still complain if other teams made a signing and Arsenal is make support signings.

I do want to say in regards to Arsenal needing a moments player I do agree and my dream signing would be someone like Osimhen but tbf Arsenal most definitely did want Sesko and are now undoubtedly interested in Williams. I do understand the questionmarks there, the thought about if that's enough to beat Pep or not and maybe you can argue that's slightly underwhelming. Not the superstar signings we want (depending on how you view them) but I do think that shows the intent you're looking for to some extent atleast. That is Arsenal looking for attackers to help us and make us more efficient in the final 3rd/give us more box presence right away with room to grow as well, might be a bit young and unproven to call them "moments" players which is fair enough but I would go as far as to call them mavericks (especially Williams) and players who can grow into becoming a "moments" player/superstar, Arsenal do look at things more long term as well as we know.
From having a plethora of young talent who had hopes of either making it to the first team or at least getting profit from in sales, to allowing the majority of them to leave on a free, reach the last year of their contracts without at least attempting to maximise their profile to now only banking on MLS & nwaneri too make it is concerning.
But as long as Arsenal are winning PL’s & CL’s it dosent matter. Until then…..

I know Teamnews said otherwise (seem to have a good track record but still not Edu or Arteta), but does Ivan Toney not solve our box efficiency at a good fee and he wouldn't need to start immediately? I also do not see Kai going back to the midfield so an Osimehn might not be feasible.

Omari literally started his youth career AT Chelses, then rejoined them as the highest paid player in their academy. We cannot compete with that whether you like it or not, our academy has been failing for over a decade.
From the end of last season I think we defo needed competition for Saka, a new CM (number 8) and competition for Saliba. Califiori wasn't on the radar, however solves the LB issue and shifts other players so that we get Tomiyasu to be "competition" for Saliba. The competition for Saka and a new CM still remains. We can say star ST but let's face it we had our highest scoring season with a progressive Havertz and a misfiring Jesus. I'm sure both will go again strong this coming season

You guys are coming people dormers and then just do nothing but complain about no marquee signings 😂 the club has invested so much in recent windows and you just cry for more, and honestly when I see someone like Leao I don't see a guaranteed success.
Try listening to someone like gunnerblog, he is actually close to people at the club, you won't see certain signings until sakes are made. 1 of arsenal's best marquee signings, Ozil, came right at the end of a window because life goes that way sometimes.

@briansmith975 I did some research. And you know what I found out about Arsenal's goal tally. 27 of those goals were from set pieces and 12 of those goals were from penalties. Arsenal need to score more open play goals. The reason they aren't is because their players aren't natural goal scorers. I'm not sure what you or artetas aversion is to getting a striker. If anything it will fun to root for a star player and talk shit to other club fans that you have a beast on the squad
Losing Chido Obi hurts but the club couldn;t do anything about it as a player cant sign a pro contract until 17. Losing ACD/REU is a bigger issue imo as we was in control. Why can't we offer these players longer contracts or when they have 2 years left offer new contract if they say no then sell with clauses. We need to maximize the academy and massively improve loan department.
