    We adopted a red heeler late last summer who had been chained up and left for dead...It took a few weeks to completely gain his trust from his past abuse. In time we absolutely fell in love with our heeler....he is the most loyal dog I've ever had. I was walking him in a thick wooded city park one morning. We had jumped a deer along the path and he went crazy...fortunately he was on a leash and after a few moments I finally calmed him down and continued the walk.....wasn't another 50 feet up the path, when he started pulling me towards the woods on the side, whining and refusing to come back to the path. I thought he might see another deer...as I looked in the direction he was, I saw nothing and continued to pull him and tell him..."there's no deer, come on and finish the walk"...but he refused and was even more determined to pull me back towards the woods...that's when I heard a sound....I walked a couple of steps into the woods and looked down at a starving brindle Boxer/pit puppy wagging his tail and whining to get to me. He followed us out and seeing his condition, decided to turn around and walk back to the car and see if he would follow. Long story short he's been with us for 8 months now....the dog wouldn't have survived another night...his ribs were showing and hip bones were pointing through his skin like they were coming through....he's fine now...strong as hell....and he worships the heeler like his hero...they play all day together, pretty much inseparable now....but that dog would have died if it wasn't for my heeler...the pit, who stays starved for affection, took to my wife who is willing to give it...but the heeler follows me everywhere I go...and it's been since I was a kid that I've been so attached to a dog....

    I had a blue years ago. Rex was great, he wasn't stubborn at all. He was protective of my daughter as a young child and loved chasing a tennis ball. He would run, circle around, jump and catch the ball, land and keep running to bring it back to me. He would do it for hours. Such a good boy.

    Iv'e had a Red Heeler for 4 years. Had no idea what I was getting into, he was listed at the rescue as a german shepherd mix. Joey and I are finally doing well - he was very reactive and is still very protective of me. He loves me, my daughter and his trainer . . . and hates everyone else. He is the smartest dog I've ever had, and I have rescued eleven dogs over 40 years.

This one is a handful, constant vigilance! Working with him whenever he's awake, keeping him busy. Still leaving time for snuggles though, he's a cutey. Just a note of caution; even though heelers are great at frisbee, be aware that it really takes a toll on their joints. The repeated concussion from landing with the bulk of their weight on their hind legs, causes a lot of wear and tear. My friends blue female became arthritic at about 7yrs old, and by 8 couldn’t jump in the truck on her own. Very sad, and she didn’t play it excessively either. A herding ball is a much better choice of exercise, and hones the skills they’re born with.

    I had a female that was so eager to please that she hung on my every work and movement. Should she enter the house? What did I want her to do? Stay out or come in? Often I would try to show no sign whatsoever ever and watch her try to figure out my wishes. She was not allowed on the bed, but slept on the floor beside my bed.
    The slightest inflection in my voice was her marching order. One night I came into my farm and she was toe to toe with a big coyote and would not back down. But her favorite sport was getting birds. She would chase them and when they thought she had given it up they would dip down, but she was still on them and would jump up and get em.

    Great video! Do your dogs bring back the frisbee every time? We have a 3 1/2 month old acd puppy that we recently rescued, and I would love to have her learn to catch (and return!) a frisbee. Do you use treats to get them to bring the frisbee back? Right now she will chase a toy and sometimes (still working on it!) will bring it back and drop it for a treat, but not always!

    • @TinRoofACD
      @TinRoofACD  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you! Yes, they do catch and retrieve the frisbee, ball, toy, etc. your pup will get it soon. She’s young. Start small by just sitting on the floor rolling a ball out not too far, preferably without a distractions. :) there’s some good ideas on CZcams to teach fetch.

      I've bred ACD's for years,and we train them with a frisbee.I dont give them treats( lots of praise though!!! It works better), when we play(train).You will start to develop a bad habit in your dog,as they will only do what you want when you give them treats!! Praise and Lovies work much better. Good luck! Don't forget...She's still young!

    I've raised these clowns for almost 30 years-therefore-I'm not sure who the crazy one is here, so that question will remain under consideration. They get into arguing and headbutting matches with the deer and elk, they go ballistic if a vehicle moves and they aren't in it, and they will bite through metal fences if someone comes near the fence line. You be the judge.

    • @TinRoofACD
      @TinRoofACD  Před 3 lety +1

      The reds are not more rare. The blues are more desired by most. Cheryl kurpas and heather warn in Michigan have gorgeous reds all the time. Some people will have red and blue pups in the same litter depending on the bloodlines and who they breed to. I would breed to a red dog if he was of lines I wanted to integrate into my program. They are a little more difficult to find sometimes, but they are out there as well as the blues. 😍

      @@TinRoofACD thank you! Sorry but I don't have FB or IG. My only entertainment is this YT. It has definitely been a quiet time this Christmas without my dogs. Update on the guy who did this is that as of the 14th he had court but still is not competent to stand trial. I guess you could say it's a good thing the longer he stays in the safer other animals and people are. It's sad that people can be so deceiving. I never thought that this person would ever do anything like that. But time moves forward we all try to do the same. But that was my only family and my best friends as many of us dog owners know. There was a lady in Calhan Colorado who raises healers and I understand that people want big money for them but the way I looked at it is she wanted me to choose the dog right after they were born and if the dog died cuz puppies can still do that I wouldn't get my deposit back. I think that's a scam also. The way I look at it a dog must it's owner.
