Annoying Noisy Car Wiper Blades...Should you CLEAN or REPLACE

- Hi, this video shows noisy, squeaky windscreen wiper blades and different attempts to fix them.
I have heard that rubbing alcohol or white vinegar will soften the rubber to remove the noise, so in the video I test them out.
By the end of the video you will hear that the noise has gone but will the cleaning work or is it best to replace the blades when the rubber starts to go hard.
Many thanks Vince - Jak na to + styl
My wipers squeaked. So I bought a new car. Problem solved.
I said that too
😂I'm not that rich
It was that easy?!?
Yeah!

Hello from Chicago, IL USA. you've made me feel so much better about replacing my wiperblades. The new blades were less than $50 and the old ones were driving me crazy. I didn't think cleaning them would do any good. Merry Christmas to you.
I put a new wiper blade RAIN X and it still made the irritating noise!! I got the blade and tightened up any loose parts on it I figured out VIBRATION causes the squeeky noice!!! Shout out from Dallas Texas 🇺🇸
Biggest problem is that the rubber takes a "set" in the down position and doesn't flop both ways.
Then it wipes down but chatters on the up sweep.
Blade manufacturers need to make a rubber compound that doesn't develop a "memory".
Well then we wouldnt have to buy new blades every 6 months
@@baconneggs2406 there are silicon wiper blades, which do last a lot longer, specially if you clean them regularly.
But the problem with these is that they're expensive.
Although, you will save a lot of money in wiper blades afterwards.
I have replaced the blades and even brand new blades missbehave.
Gregory Dix You need more downforce. Bend the arm down at the midpoint.
@@SteelBuckeye May the force be with you.
ANCO are better then all of them and cheaper then all of them, Backed by mechanic shop owners
I put a thin application of wax after I cleaned my windshield and blades that does the trick for me and u use the whippers less I’ve noticed
Windscreen rain repellent solution on the windscreen silences noisy wiper blades plus at around 50 mph+ the wipers can be turned off completely even driving through heavy rain. Worn linkages can also cause noisy blades even with new blades.
You need to raise the washer jets because at speed you will have no water on your screen
Becarefull aquaplaning
What brand do you suggest?
The trick is to CLEAN the wiper blades. Neither alcohol nor vinegar will do that efficiently enough like that. Remove the blades from the vehicle, soak them in a tub of warm soapy water, wash with a soft brush and rinse.
Cleaning the blade to remove road dirt contamination & using pencil graphite from a joiners pencil will work quite well :-)
I like the sound of wipers. Reminds me of Hitchcock's psycho.
More often than not this results from using hot wax options at the car wash and layering the glass with a wax finish....best to clean the entire screen with an alcohol based cleaner. Do it several times, that wax is stubborn stuff.
Thanks a lot. I used vinegar to clean wiper blades.
Few seconds, problems totally solved. 😍🤩
Thank you very much. I’m going to take your advice and buy new ones. They sound so silly. Thanks again
I have bought expensive new ones, brand mark, still the same "screaming" with the them! What to do?
@@jorunn62 softening the blade edge with sand paper could work.
@@jorunn62 Try wd40 on them. Or twist the arm
With so many wiper blade sellers, your £30.00 purchase was expensive. Many online retailers are selling A939S for around £20.
If your are going to replace wiper blade it is important to thoroughly clear the windscreen.
As most contaminants are greasy try a good kitchen degreaser with the wipers off the vehicle, this also makes cleaning the screen easier.
Twist the arms such that the wiping edge of the rubber is at 90 degrees to the screen when the wipers are at the top of their stroke to ensure an even wiping action on the way up and down .Old tweaks are the best,,
I elect to clean the glass then apply liquid wax that allows the blades to slide easily and the water beads up nicely as well. If needed the blades get wiped as well. Replacing the blades when broken, stiff or when they do not do a good job of removing water. Thanks
I use screenwash to clean my wipers.
Use autoglym wax on the windscreen and buff it off, that might make it better.
I bought a perfect new pair with the original brand; still the same noice😫🙀
Same here 😥 donno what to do
A few things to try if you are having poor wiping performance; Clean the wiper blade and windscreen with warm soapy water, followed by a clay bar for the windscreen and then wax and grease remover to remove any stubborn contaminants. If you have issues with wiper arm pressure, you can lubricate the wiper arm spring with wd40.
I did all of which you said in the first sentence. wipers still drag. what I have seen is the the rubber edge is folded when the wiper is resting, its not straight, like the tension is too much. I replaced the blades few months back but they starting skipping and became noisy within a month
Hi @@tejaspadhye Thanks for your reply. If your wiper arm is applying excessive pressure onto the wiper blades, see if you can find a wiper blade with a lower mounting point, some wipers have bulky attachments, these are good for older cars and can compensate for the lack in wiper arm pressure. If that doesn't work, you may need to replace the wiper arm.
@@UNIWIPER Okay. my car is 13 years old and the wiper arm is stuck on with rust. thanks for your reply
You can use autoglym wax on your windscreen to get rid of firework burn streaks on your windscreen in which only show up when the screen is wet.
The wax will cure this problem.
I use shaving foam for my wipers and it works. Also you can also use WD-40 on your blades.
Try using rainx glass cleaner I've heard that works!!
If you live in a climate that is mostly sunny, your probably better off in long run to buy silicon based wiper blades like PIAA for they wont go stiff from oxidation.
Cleaning the blades once or twice a year will make the blades last longer I use methyl hydrate.
I wonder if it would help if wipers had a "park" position where the blades were lifted slightly off of the glass, so that the rubber wouldn't permanently distort in one direction?
I have an old ford expedition and the rear wiper actually does that.
As such, it has managed to work for far longer than it should.
I think the mechanism to lift them up shouldn't be too complicated, probably a little "ramp" in which the arm slides off and on, and lifting it a few millimetres when in the off position.
I know this is an old comment 😊 what i do is just pull up the wipers when i'm park at home or some establishment parking that is exposed on direct sunlight
I wonder if Its just an issue with Mercedes... I have a 16, c300 (w205) and get the jitter as well, but my previous car, BMW, blades were silent and smooth year round. (Blades replaced on my merc once a year)
Think your washer jets need moving up a tad😀
mine were noisy, mechanic had fitted new mechanism for widscreen wiper, plus new wiper blade unit, but new unit did;nt match original wiper piece basically two holes align and you fit screws because they did,nt match he only fitted one screw not two,so basiclly when wipers on not correct pressure so making grinding sound, rubber piece i drilled holes so holes matched fitted extra screw had to plastic weld because hole i drilled was next to existing hole so quite weak i did plastic weld over old hole to strengthen it
Quit with water in squirter. Good quality (not cheap stuff)wiper fluid used regularly helps rubber last longer and perform better.
It is important to clean the windshield really well before putting new wiper or the new wiper will be contaminated with oil and wax again and starts to squeak like the old one. So, try to clean the old wiper first with the rubbing alcohol.
My new wipers still are noisy.
@@diannawashington9538 Because your windshield has so much residue or dirt or wax. you need Isopropanol 90% from Walmart to really clean the windshield from wax. YOu also need to good wipers. Bosch Icon, or something in the same class.
Thanks for the good tip.

Rainx work great on windshield, plus I have tried hair conditioner to soften the rubber up
Vinegar and alcohol dry out the rubber, find products that condition meaning soften
Very good video explained just exactly what I need to do! Perfect video.....
So, wipers that make that noise are usually just in need of replacement?
The solution is to slide the rubber out and reinsert it from the opposite end.
The rubber is meant to wipe and drag like a paint brush.
But when they have been sitting against the glass for months, their shape is distorted and they try to cut into the glass causing squeaking and shuddering.
Installing from the opposite end restores their shape against the glass and normal operation.
I agree if that is possible to do. I have found that you need to gently and in small increments try bending the whole arm using a padded adjustable wrench...pliers are hard to hold tight. Turn one way or the other as needed. Even though this works well I find I need it done again with a new pair. Now back in the old days, I would install a new blade on the drivers side and keep moving the old one to the passenger thus using one new blade at a time. But today many of the blades are different length for each side.
That has worked for me before also.
No matter which way I start twisting it seems the wrong direction...
Edward M Manns
I don’t recommend twisting but the frame needs to be flat to glass as manufactured.
To understand how the rubber blade should work, with your right hand wipe right to left with your palm and left to right with the back of your hand.
Imagine your hand is a paint brush.
The rubber edge should always trail across the glass like the end of a brush.
When the rubber has lost its shape because it has been sitting too long against the glass it will squeak and shudder.
Pulling the blade out and feeding from the opposite end of the frame will in a day or so put the rubber back to original shape eliminating the noise.
If you want silent wiper blades- buy Silicone wiper blades (PIAA were the ones I bought-Amazon), they're silent and last practically forever. I love mine.
sptrader DON’T buy on line because one day you won’t have any shops and your doing someone out of a job 🙄
I tried that on my Odyssey. Worked great on the passenger side, but chattered on the drivers side. I gave up after the third blade chattered. So I use a regular blade in the left and a PIAA on the right.

Hi, how is going on?? I am thinking to buy w213 which has same issue. I heard blade is not a solution. Let me update your test result. MB are so disapointed making this bad.
Sometimes on older cars the wiper arm springs get weak and don't hold the blades against the glass as well so they skip and stutter. Not much you can do about it except bend the wiper arm a little. I keep vehicles for 10 - 20+ years, usually
Bought a set of expensive Bosch they worked for year and now the noise seems like they all have a short shelf life
I've found Bosch to be among the worst and priciest.
regular life span on screen wipers its arround from 6monts up to year.
I spent $70 on Bosch windshield wiper blades and they were absolutely horrible waste of money
I use Methylated Spirit sparingly on a bit of tissue for the blades, never had any problems.
I would deep clean the glass thoroughly with White Spirit, followed by your favourite glass cleaner......mine is the combined Rain-x and glass cleaner that comes in a yellow spray bottle, but it's all down to personal choice.
Thanks for posting and Happy Christmas to you 👍👍
Ummmm, my news ones are the ones making the noise.
Mine too ..... 😔
I tried the silicon blades. Worked great on the passenger side, but noisy on the drivers side. Regular blades on the drivers side worked fine for about six months.
You could use dealer wiper blades as they will be original fitment, as car manufacturers match the blades with the windscreen glass. More expensive but worth it for the silence. Where as auto shop wiper blades are a fit all compromise.
@@D0csavage1 just had my replaced and the new ones are macking this same exact noise..... I went to a bmw dealership....
@@user-so2rh9om6y I just bought a full set from the dealer for my car last week. Ultra quiet. It was a dealership parts shop person that advised me to fit OEM wipers years ago, he is the one that said the blades are matched to the windscreen by the car manufacturer.
I had brand new bosch wiper blades from Halfords, and they are worse than the ones I binned. Going to replace them with Halfords own brand.
Now, when I need to fix something,.. not need to do.. I will buy a new ones.. Genius.
Exactly. Have a problem? Throw money at it and hope it goes away
I've bought new wiper blades that started rattling after a few months. So having new ones is not really a solution. Cleaning them did help, but the noise returned.
You can buy wax and put it on windshield once in every 3 months. That surely works for squeaky wiper blades
Yes, the OEM ones work great for many years. The after market ones make noise and tear every year. They make them that way so you have to replace every year.
They have silicone wiper blades here in the US that last longer and dont dry out and make noises liek these rubber blades
You even did not try to clean the windshield. Windshield must clean regularly because the air pollution, smoke, dead bugs make oily windshield then this makes the noise. Mostly if you clean up windshield with toothpaste, you won't have noise.
...or even Autoglym glass polish will sort the issue....
Thank you!
Dont clean your wipers with cloth because you also clean the lead which helps the rubber slide on the windshield. Just use one bottle of water and wash it if there is dust or dirt on it.
I bought some (two rubber and one plastic) only the rubber ones make that noise, the plastic one doesnt and this was from new.
New blades are always going to be your best fix but in a pinch...
We dont have those wiper attatchments in the USA, but we should, those are fcn cool
Thanks
They are not fake they are genuine and have lasted nearly 2 years so far and still going well and quiet.
Rain x works too.
Excellent
You made one big mistake. Windshield contaminants kill wipers and can render them ineffective. Give it a good scrubbing using soap and a plastic scrubby sponge. Follow with a razor blade scraping, then alcohol wipe. An occasional clay bar cleaning also helps and is worth the effort. After that, coat with either aquapel or Nano hydrophobic coating and you’ll find wipers are rarely even needed. Also space wipers off of a hot summer windshield as the heat accelerates rubber set & hardening.
SuperSatan666devil- Windshields are too expensive.
It didn't work for me I bought new blades for 30 pounds I like this video what's your car my car is Suzuki sx4
when you fit new blades if you give the edges a wipe over with 303 aerospace protectant every 6mths after cleaning the blades they will last for years
.....soak the blades in that solution overnight before installation, and the rubber will never get hard. Same for belts as well. Be sure the windscreen is cleaned, you can use 0000 steel wool to do a great job. Silicon blades seem to be better quality.
@@patrickhenry948 I have 303 on the way to me, I was going to ask about the wipers, I got the 303 for my tires, Hopfully that stuff works I was also going to spray on my belts as the car is running to make sure it gets all of the belt area. Any feed back would be helpfull.
@@patrickhenry948 cheers for the tip, i never thought about soaking them, i do some times use the fine steel wool before i hit it with fall out remover, and clay.
@@bobgleaser7106 ...........303 is fantastic stuff, but it's expensive, (I bought 5L at over US$ 130 in Japan) but worth the price. My suggestion is to apply it with a paint brush rather than spray it, just be careful of the moving belts, but easy enough to do. I can already see my tyres with zero wear on them after months on bendy mountain roads. Normally I'd go through a set of front tyres in a year. Also try it on old leather boots, ......looks like new.
Dang! I was hoping the solution would work! Guess I gotta spend money🤨
Try wd40 instead
Yes, more practical solution 👍😃
WD40 worked great for me. Cleaned all the crap off them and stopped them squeaking, also gave a streak free wipe.
'How to' fix your wiper blades: Buy new ones
same thing but I clean the passgeer wiper with water trunk it on quit no noise

never ever touch the blades even for cleaning or while washing the car. they are coated with graphtie powder so whatever you do to blades, you will eventually damage the coating and they will start squeaking or leaving excess fluid on the windshield. you can only direct some pressure water from distance for removing dirts and particles.
Merhaba , temizlemenin bir yolu var mı peki ?
The only time my wipers ever squeaked was when the glass wasnt wet enough to use them.
A way to make blades wipe better without streaks however is to run scotch brite up and down the length of the blade. It evens out the edge. If the rubber feather edge is damaged though its time.to replace.
Speechless...
Is no one going to talk about Jin?
That's why I'm here

What if blade is new?
Glycerin or silicone. Or repl. the blades.
Mine is originMercedes brand new and still does noise
Surgical Spirit sounds like a mixed drink for doctors.
Well, doctors are nervous at surgery too. Perfect solution to ease stress.
Chrisfix said Dont use alhahol on Your Windshield viper Used soapy water
There are at least a couple auto maintenance gurus here on CZcams that advocate what they call "super cleaning" your windshield, and I think both of them used fine steel wool as part of the process. Kilmer is one of the names and I think Fix is the other. Might be worth a look!
Scotty Kilmer and ChrisFix
Careful!
Even using 0000 steel wool on an 03 Toyota Highlander, we marred the window and had to have it replaced.
@@martymeyer4125 dont mees up with that. cheaper to buy new wipers
I washed my new blades in boiling water in the sink - stopped the noise
It would be a shame if some one stole your new blades...
as long as they replace them with something better
@@UNIWIPER Something better like ...air?... unfortunately you'll realize blades are gone only after turn them on.
i have put new ones on and they still make all that noise
It could be the angle of the blade relevant to the screen , should be 90 degrees and then should flop over and flop back.
Biggest problem is that the rubber takes a "set" in the down position and doesn't flop both ways.
Then it wipes down but chatters on the up sweep.
Blade manufacturers need to make a rubber compound that doesn't develop a "memory".
@@norman7179 yes , altering the angle perpendicular to the screen helps , a couple of degree's either before or after 90 degrees to the screen . SLIGHTLY twisting the torsion of the arms achieve this . this stops noise even with knackered blades . new blades will not cure a chatter but adjusting the perpendicular angle will always cure chatter but not smears , smears mean new blades.
This is happening on my new car and I can't fucking stand it anymore... I tried cleaning them and a bunch of other stuff but still the problem persists.
That may be a design flaw then...
cool car
Get a 3000 grit sandpaper sheet for 50p rub it against the blade gently not only will it clean the hard grime on the blade edge but also even the worn out bits to even level and your done....
I've sussed it out... 1, drink the rubbing alcohol, 2, put the vinegar on a bag of chips that you can buy on your way down to Halfords. 3, don't be a stingy bastard and just buy a decent set of Bosh blades... 4, put new blades on and drive yourself down to A&E to get your stomach pumped
Clever, true and VERY FUNNY. thanks.
Clean the wipers and the windscreen the dirt builds up on both
Changed twice and they still make a noise.
Alcohol doesn't hydrate, it does the exact opposite. To people and wipers.
I bought my $50+ blades 8 months ago, and they're shit now. I'm thinking of putting either wax or RainX on the windshield *_AND_* the blades to get them to stop making noise. I am *_ABSOLUTELY NOT_* spending $100 a year on wiper blades. No way. There's no how.
Heinzkitz Velvet wipers noise is not related to the wipers. It’s because of dirt on your glass. Get some ready mixed windshield wash fluid. The noise will go from the first squirt of it I’m sure
I don't think alcohol is good for cleaning blades bc the rubber must be dehydrated in order to wipe clean alcohol makes stuff dry
i have new one and still makes noises
Rubber becomes petrified looses oils solvents accelerate it.. They’re only solvents that actually add oil back that are only available through the industry best case scenario change your blades before you get a scratch or any other damage to your windscreen
WD40 on the blades and clean as much dirt off and leave to dry. Then use glass window cleaner on your windscreen, job done !
WOW! WD40!!!! Last time I bought blades was 4 years ago. Every year before the weather turns cold I remove my blades and soak them in WD40 overnight. I use the long plastic tray that the wipers come in, fill that up with wd40. Guaranteed not to squeak! Try it!
Will try.
The first thing I would do is clean the windscreen with some Cif bath cleaner (slightly abrasive, but won't scratch the screen) to get rid of any unnecessary drag
on the wiper blades, if that doesn't work, then change the blades.
the problem is that the glass is not very clean, if the glass is clean then a mixture of alcohol and vinegar would do wonders..
Especially if you bought them from a "dealer" = "killer" they should perfectly work.

I've heard you won't have this problem if you don't buy Bosch blades in first place.
