"Flashlight, the torch not the sex toy"
You know what your audience is hearing, lol.
I just love how he makes these jokes straight-faced and with monotonic voice. Crack me every time.
Not all ninjas wield swords.
Haha I love his humor
First time checking out his channel...subbed right after I heard that.
😂
Keep up these videos, we need a good list of best and worst 4K HDR titles!
@@discopotato4317 There are easy to find lists of "true 4K" movies but I don't know about HDR. Yes this type of review is very appreciated.
I'm my opinion video games have the best hdr implementation among of all types of content
@@qalamiti6____________748 I disagree, HDR in gaming is so recent that it just hasn't reached its potential on most platforms. The only platforms where it is really good is on the PlayStation 4 and 5 and Xbox series s and x and phones although this depends on the OS. Hdr on pc is atrocious especially in games thx to windows.
@@qalamiti6____________748 HDR on movies look the best in my opinion because of realism. And it's real life so hdr makes things look more realistic and wide color gamuts are more necessary.
@@CoffeeOn Windows supports HDR gaming in a ton of movies. It comes down to the video card and monitor used. If video out goes to an OLED, like the LGBX/CX series, the TV can play the games quite good.
You just convinced me to buy the Matrix for the 3rd time.
Just the third?
Damn, came here to make this joke. If they made an 8-track of this movie I’d buy it.
Hope you have enough cash to drop on the Panasonic UB9000 4k blu ray player. That sucker is $1500 on Amazon. And that's with taxes and shipping not included! 🤯🤯🤯
Yes, I have ultimate DVD and Blu-ray version. Now I need to get Blu-ray 4K version, and the Apple iTunes version
@@skornthesnake6935 I just got the UB820 a downgrade when it comes to audio quality, but it has the same specs when it comes to video and I don't have the space for a full audio system, just a soundbar with surrounds, I'm happy with it so far
Also the UB9000 was $899 at Best Buy the last two weeks. It's $999 now but even after NYS tax and a 4 year warranty it's $1,202. Don't know where the other $300 is coming from. Is it a 3rd party seller?
I remember when we first got a 1080p HDTV years ago, the Matrix Blu-ray collection was one of the first movies I bought to test it out. Their sharpness and colours blew me away and still do. Not surprised to see they’re also some of the best examples of 4K HDR today.
The Matrix is one of my favorite UHD Blu-rays, such a massive upgrade over the standard Blu-ray and a great HDR grade.
Can u compare hdr quality with apple tv streaming source :)?
This review just shows how amazing 35mm film is, if used correctly.
Yes, virtually unlimited dynamic-range, and greater than 6.5K resolution. Long live analog film.
@@TomlinsonHolman52583 35mm doesn't have greater than 6.5K resolution, it barely has enough for 4K.

@@ArtVandelayOfficial - 35mm = at least 6.5K - 70mm = 16-18K.

One of my favourite movies of all time, and a great disc. Cheers for the top video, Vincent!
Love the video! Your best analysis yet I think. It’s nice to see a proper HDR film for a change.
Vincent is a man at the top of his game. I'm really happy to see his channel grow over the years. He's just done his thing, and it's paying off. What a legend.
I'm enjoying the heck out of these HDR reviews!!! keep up the good work Vincent.
"And by flashlights, I mean the torch, not the sex toy" LOLOL
Torch? Like the ones in Minecraft?
he did not add the ring sound 😂
@@CaveyMoth In the UK they call flashlights "torches," which makes sense as a modern-day replacement. But I think the two terms came for early marketing, in the U.S. a "flashlight" because early designs required brief resting periods between flashes. In the UK they were sold as "electric torches," shortened overtime to just "torches."
Love his delivery, like always, you'll never now where it'll be inserted... Bit like a Flashlight... Not the torch
Love these 4K blu Ray HDR videos!! Good addition to the TV reviews
Review breakdown is of great value to avoid wasting my $$$ on poor 4K discs.
Great job at analyzing the content! Interesting and hopefully pushes the industry to release good HDR.
Hey Vincent I’ve been following the channel for quite a while now. You should keep putting out these 4K Blu-ray reviews. They are super useful!
I think it must be stated that films produced using photochemical processing are more likely to have a cleaner conversion to Optical DISC, with HDR variants encoded to the disc, through mastering.
Might be an idea to view any future HDR mastering on Chris Nolans work, as he used not only film, but a wide gamut though iMAX cameras for some of his work.
Excellent review again Vincent! Thank you!
Love this new series of your 4k blu ray analysis. More please!
The flashlight joke got me and convinced me to like, comment, and subscribe. Great rundown, as usual.
I love how he includes tiny jokes in the reviews while keeping a serious normal tone😂 ->🔦
He has more than one tone? 😜
2:03 like that one? I find highly inappropriate and it means I can’t watch with my kids. Pretty crass.
@@DavidJJJ Grow up. Do you think your kids will go through their lives and not hear words like that? Making a big deal of things like that makes it more of an issue.
EDIT: I also can't believe that you reported the video for sexual content. You must be a barrel of laughs.
Nyle I’m glad you think it’s an issue, I think the only way these things can be addressed is through constructive dialogue. Inserting sexualised content into otherwise innocuous content is just not appropriate, that’s why there are guidelines.
@@DavidJJJ It's a joke, it's not that deep. These videos are hardly aimed at kids.
Love these reviews! Keep these coming!
Just found your channel, and loving these HDR reviews! Would really really like to seem more!!!
Awesome finding Vincent, on the Wide Color Gamut signaling metadata present on the disc going to the edges of the Rec.2020 triangle color space on the CIE1931 chromacity diagram.
Imagine how valuable would be to find even more available 4K UltraHD titles like that, and also other 4K UltraHD titles that instead only have Rec.709 color.
Really awesome Vincent !!!
Since no current consumer display can display full Rec.2020 colors, not even on the $30.000 price range, maybe only some studio grading monitors (needing 2000W power and water cooling ), this means that, until there is a consumer display (sub-$5000) available so we can watch at home the colors already available on the The Matrix 4K UltraHD Blu-ray disc ... maybe only in 2030 ... or later ... with full RGB displays using 3x laser light sources (Red laser + Green laser + Blue laser)
________
Recommendation: it may be underestimated, but at the end of your videos you really need to bring back your Outros : )
- the end phrase "If you found this video useful, please click the like button and subscribe to the HDTVTest youtube channel for more videos like this. Thank you for watching, and, I will see you, in the next video"
- the end music
- it all adds to the value : )
I remember watching the making of the Matrix many years ago and it was definitely way ahead of its time in so many technical areas! The bullet time for instance required hundreds of cameras and was extremely labor intensive. So, I'm not surprised that the HDR on the film is quality, all these years later!
What a great way to produce content during this unusual time and in between TV releases. Hope you can somehow review the new Vizio Quantum X the 85 inch in particular
The Fleshlight is capable of producing a very high dynamic range as well. Measure THAT, Vincent.
Always enjoy your Excellent informative videos and humor Great Job 👏 👍👍Thanks
I was amazed when I first got my copy of this movie, it is crazy good. One of the best quality 4k Blurays I have seen.
Loving this series. Would you consider doing some classic catalog titles that have gotten the 4K HDR treatment? Such as: Alien, The Shining, and Jaws?
And 2001.
And the original Predator
And the real *Blade* *Runner*
Fun fact: *Alien* *The* *Shining* and *Jaws* are all presented in *HDR10+* - the format is not dead. Also, the *Back* *to* *the* *Future* 4K Blu-ray trilogy will feature *HDR10+*
And Gladiator.
I wish Vincent would do more disc reviews. He has an entire untapped market of collectors who crave analysis.
You are awesome. We just keep on learning thanks to you. 👍
2:26 That's some sort of metacinema: Morpheus's just telling the viewer to wear sunglasses while watching this scene on a 1000 nits (almost fullscreen) capable display.
Keep up your awesome work! need more positive HDR reviews and to know what is worth a buy.
This review is also ahead of its time.
Panasonic dx902 here ! The Matrix 4k is stunning on it !
Me too! I haven’t got the matrix yet though. The Mad Max fury road UHD Blu-Ray also looks amazing.
I’d support a Gofundme to purchase this monitor for Vincent so we can get ongoing reviews of real HDR discs
Thanks Vincent! I've watched this a long while ago, and it looked amazing. All the sex toys (typo) really pop, especially against the dark, film-noir backgrounds.
The Matrix was the first DVD i ever watched, having already owned the VHS version i was blown away. Seems like this film's presentation never ceases to amaze. Gonna have to upgrade my bluray version now.
It was one of the earlier DVDs I watched. In that case it was on a computer with a 5:4 CRT monitor.
The Matrix DV/HDR 4K discs are incredible. I saw stuff I never even noticed in the theater.
Loving these reviews. I’d love to see live action, and anime UHD of ghost in the shell checked. Some older movies would be nice too. Like alien, maybe some John Carpenter flicks, and the predator UHD box set. Just curious how they compare to newer releases in peak brightness. Hope these don’t come off as demands lol. Just making suggestions
It depends on which version of the anime Ghost in the Shell you use . Some have said the U.S. Lionsgate version is not as good as overseas and the lip syncing on the sub is off also . I have a DVD (ripped) copy and the 25th anniversary bluray (not the 2.0 enhanced) and awaiting the arrival of my steel book version from Bestbuy to compare ..
mike k was curious about it. Almost picked it up at Walmart for $17.99. Grabbed the live action one lol, interstellar and beetlejuice UHDs. Haven’t checked out any animation on UHD.
@@Blake_Mills I have the live action too , but haven't watched it yet ...
Soooo is the LPCM 2.0 version of GITS (anime) the best version for 4K HDR? If so, that seriously sucks!
My favorite movie of all Time Thank you Vincent
You should compare the 4K hdr disc to the streaming version on Apple TV to see if there a difference on levels too
Why I dont own the Matrix on 4K yet is beyond me, i have the DVD box set with the Animatrix, and a standard 1080p Blu-Ray box set. Now Vincent tells me how good the 4K version is after just getting home from an entertainment store and deciding not to buy a 4K movie. God damn it
I can confirm that The Matrix is a stunning 4k blu ray. On the other hand The Last Jedi looks exactly the same as the blu ray 🤬🤬. Fantastic stuff Vincint. More! More!!!
this hdr resting is so great. had to subscribe.
Keep these videos coming. Need someone to keep these distributors honest.
Another shred of evidence that the Matrix is a movie sent back in time by the AI to warn us.
Vincent I really like your videos/expertise about display tech. You have covered all other techs beside QNED. So when you have time it would be interesting to watch your thoughts about it as well.
Hey Vincent, I was thinking, I've been wondering for as long as when youtube introduced HDR compatibility, if there was some precise specifications. Like, what can theoricaly be the maximum pic brightness of an HDR youtube video, and most of all, what's the max color gamut coverage possible on CZcams? Are they using rec.2020 or P3 at best? Maybe I just don't understand it at all and mix it all up, but since you have the tools to mesure these, it would be cool to know once and for all what youtube is capable of.
I think this might have been "stretched" to fill the 2020 color space. Not the first UHD BD to do that.
And also, that HDR is kinda all over the place. Flashlights in a dark room brighter than the white room? Sun reflecting off a metal handle reaching over 400 nits? This seems way off.
its actually because the tv color gamut setting isn't correct, the matrix is one of the few 4k releases that is in dci-p3, not in a rec2020 container
"Understatment of the year" made my day 😂
Vincent taking Hollywood to task!! I love it
Normally i only watch Vincent's videos about products of movies that i own or are interested in. But i think i'm going to watch them all since he's becoming my new favorite comedian xD!
I could tell there was something special about this bluray. It just looked so damn crisp.
It's infuriating that a twenty year old movie can have perfect HDR but new Star Wars content doesn't exceed 200 nits.
Late to reply, but.. so that is why the new SW movies look like junk on my oled? I tought it was the tv (Philips is known for black crush a d Ive been getting way too much of it in these movies and also yeah peak bright seems low as well it doesnt even feel like you are watching on an oled BIG dissapointment) cant wait to try out this Matrix in hdr
Going off on a tangent, despite having DOLBY VISION on two sets in my house (Sony Z9D and LG CX), frankly I haven't been impressed with it (DOLBY VISION). My complaint is a variant on what you're eluding to -- crappy mastering. I have to explain this to lay folk on a regular basis, e.g., music. The mastering process will make a far bigger difference than the medium (CD vs. streaming). Likewise, the fidelity of a display doesn't mean the underlying content is amazing, e.g., stretching a low resolution image across a 4K display doesn't make the underlying image "4K." Moving along, how many directors are going to sit in a mastering room with the editing guy and adjust baseline brightness on a scene by scene basis? Particularly for TV shows? Yeah, not a lot. This would mean considerably more work than HDR10 mastering. There's a lot of "HDR" video that is nothing more than a button on a Mac to put video in an HDR container (HDR10 or Dolby Vision). I just subscribed to Disney+ and despite lots of content being in DOLBY VISION, nothing I've seen has stood out as having received some higher level of mastering treatment. I only bought the LG CX two months ago and while I've enjoyed OLED's strengths, the first thing that REALLY popped out as being special on the OLED was Netflix's "The Ripper" (the aerial night shots) which is a documentary limited series about a serial killer from the 70's in England. This after seeing quite a bit of other content in the last 2 months.
@@betelgeuse68 you are speaking truth my friend, sadly I have come to the same conclusion. Most HDR is just a lazy press on 1 button making it look even worse than SDR by limiting max brightness to 300 so it will look acceptable on low end as well. Frankly, my TV (Philips oled 805) does a better job uspcaling SDR into HDR with its tone mapping tricks making it look bettet than most "real HDR".
Don't be furious. I've found that many times older is better.
I wonder if when mastering the Star Wars movies, they flattened the colour range to mask how outdated the effects have become. Lucas said he used a lot of CG sets to suppress the budget costs but I think high quality HDR would expose the limited quality CG applied throughout the prequel movies.
Flashlights lmaooooo
Soon Vincent will be reviewing products from love honey
Thanks for specifying which flashlight.
Funny enough I ordered this collection a few weeks ago. Glad to hear it doesn't suck.
Way ahead of it's time!
The 4K Matrix disc is coming up on being 2 1/2 years old.
Ancient history in HD displays.
If it's a reference standard, who cares how old it is.
@HDTVTest Couldn't the EIZO reference monitor have been used as well? CG3145/3146
I had this movie on vhs, dvd and bluray lol now its time to get a 4k bluray copy
Clinical and extremely useful.
Unsure why the “ding” sound effect wasn’t used when the Flashlight comment was mentioned 🤔
Classic movie, classy review!
Yeah, this is one of my favorite 4k titles, looks superb and the brightness is just right.
Should I go with the 4K UDH trilogy box or get them individually? Is there any differences besides price between them?
I loaded this movie up tonight for the first time 4K HDR and that white room scene blinded me in a good way lol. The HDR is awesome. After seeing dark scenes then being kinda shocked when my whole panel lit up.
Awesome. What display are you using?

Can you start doing HDR10 vs. HDR10+ vs. Dolby Vision comparisons, since are some 4K Blu-rays that have both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision?
He arleady did once. No difference. Unless it is FEL Dolby vision...
@@lolerie He only did an HDR10 vs HDR10+ comparison. I would like you see a comparison between HDR10+ and Dolby Vision to see what differences the two dynamic metadata HDR formats make in picture quality from the static metadata HDR10 standard and see which deliver the best HDR performance.
@@DarthGhostface oh, indeed. I stay corrected. Though dual laywer Dolby Vision can restore even 444 and full range and 4000 nits. So...
Dolby Vision is the best type of HDR.

Yes! 35mm film, with virtually unlimited dynamic-range, and at least 6.5K resolution.
There matrix has been on my list of 4k discs to buy. Now it's moving to the top of my list.
I’d love a look at the Daniel Craig bond films Vincent 😊 I wonder if roger got his way with the skyfall HDR disc?
He always uses Skyfall gallery scene in all TV reviews. 4K HDR analysis is a must.

Did you mean Big Red One- A Star Wars Story, lol
Let me guess.. Rouge one? You're French :p

Brilliant stuff as usual Vinchenzo. Any tips on refresh rate and stuttering when watching 4k? All action sequences seem blurry to me.

I also want to know!
our boy vince is keeping the movie industry honest one HDR movie review at a time. i know for sure what my first HDR blu ray will be now. which reminds me: @HDTVTest vince you gotta put affiliate links to the movies you review! You just sold me on the matrix but... you're not getting anything from it (other than my love!)
It's about time I pick this disc up
Yes I watched this on Monday night and was surprised how good it looked. I can't measure the brightness but to my eye it looked great.
Another "old" film that I think has a nice 4K remaster (again just to my eye) is Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, I picked it up last month and considering the film is from 1989 and didn't have a massive budget the image is so *clean*. Hope they do Bogus Journey as well.
Check out The Shining. Best looking 4k movie I have ever seen.
Appreciate this series! Can you please check Avengers: Endgame? I watched this on my A8H OLED the other night, and I think there are large sections of the movie in SDR, but the film seems to switch to HDR for select scenes... similar to aspect ratio switching. After the full screen IMAX ratio debacle, I’m curious to know if the film was further compromised.
This disk will be my new benchmark for showing off HDR. It's already my go-to for Atmos testing.
I came here for the FlasH LighT analysis, BuT stayed for the FlesH light joke. Kudos ViNceNt, Kudos to you 👏 😆

Hi Vincent, great analysis, will you do Batman vs Superman in the future?
What do you think Vincent has the most influence on perception? Is the current focus on nits valuable at all?
You crack me up. Flashlight. A torch not a sex toy! Haha so random for this video but funny
So far I am most impressed with the Blue Planet 2/Planet Earth 2 boxset for 4K HDR visual candy, 7 Worlds One Planet is great too and Mad Max for an action movie, unfortunately my Mad Max disc has been acting up when they reach the canyons.
I can remember when the matrix came to town to shoot(I'm old). For what it's worth the city scenes looked very appropriate on the 4k disc. Having said that I jumped from a small crt tv to a 4k tv setup so most discs looks pretty good to me. :p
This was my favourite movie as a kid. I was in Sydney CBD every weekend with my family and being able to match scenes in the movie to locations I had visited was such an amazing experience. Particularly when I found the road under the railway line near central used for scene where Neo gets in the car with Trinity and they take the tracer bug out of his stomach. Great memories!
Love the Matrix I have so many different versions ! Great to see it's True HDR and Dolby Vision . Could you please review the UK Arrow release of Pitch Black amazingly it doesn't mention HDR at all so it maybe the one release that doesn't false advertise ! It does mention Dolby Vision though which is good news !
Hello Vincent.
Will you test Asus ProArt PA32UCX-K or Asus ProArt PA32UCX-PK anytime soon. I want to purchase the simplest of these two, but I heard that they have color LUT issues.
Very interesting insights into the wcg. I don't quite understand how can a color space be captured that no TVs support? Maybe it's the cameras used (that support the color space) during filming?
You can produce any color from original colors in color grading stage. Even if you can't see it on the monitor. 👹
Okay since everyone is requesting titles to review, I would also like to request an analysis of Ready Player One. This movie has a lot of bright highlights and opportunities to use wide color so it would be interesting to see if it does.
The XE93 was also awesome for holding peak brightness. (Having one of course)
Austin Gray I actually so salty I didn’t stretch my budget to an XE93 back then!
If there are no displays supporting Rec2020 full coverage! Then how did they mastered to that level in the film?
Does anyone know if PS 5 supports 48 or 40 Gbps at 120Hz 4:4:4? Xbox Series X supports 40 Gbps and not 48 Gbps
I was struggling to find a good source on which films to buy to try out my new TV, until I realised all I have to do is refer to my favourite video expert.
Could you review the new Pitch Black 4K Blu Ray release?
What I miss in this review is which TV I should buy to experience the best of these 4K UHD Blu-ray movies.
Is this UHD Blu-ray dark for anyone? I have an Xbox One S connected to my LG C6 with HDR enabled and I have to reluctantly turn on Dynamic Contrast to High to make out the surrounding hallway around the cat in the dejavu scene, and the bricks in the windows afterwards. I've compared it with 1080p non-HDR on Netflix, Amazon and Blu-ray and those are all brighter overall on the same TV.
Hi Vincent, can you check the HDR of Aquaman? I've heard, it should be very good to...
And could you do a comparison Video about the differences between HDR/Dolby Vision on Disc compared to HDR/Dolby Vision on streaming services .. IF(!) there is a difference ;)
Thanks :)
What about the 4K resolution, is an upconversion or is a native 4K scan from original film ?
