- Hey. What's up? We're talking about REALLY dumb video game rumors a I heard as a kid. I'm talking Sonic in Super Smash Bros Melee, Toad in Melee, Waluigi in Super Mario 64 DS, the Animal Crossing Whale, Herobrine, fake Pokemon Rumors, and more. Hope you enjoy it or something.

I remember rumors on Club Penguin/Webkinz that your pets could die. Wouldn't stop hearing that everywhere.
The Webkinz killer really scared a lot of people. I think there's just an inherent fear in the idea that this "peaceful game" hides a dark secret.
SAME, like if you neglected them or they got too sick they’d die. i even saw a video about that with Webkinz, which is now what i think of when i hear “hey there dililah”

unfortunately, the only rumor I ever believed was herobrine. as kids, i like to think we all did.
I wanted to believe it so hard because it was such a cool concept, but sadly I had been burned too many times.
i also belived that, untill the multi colored steves, then the ore steves, then entity 303, the (insert block here) steves, the multi color alexes, the milti color hrobrines, and literaly all that sort of stuff, like why

I once got fooled about someone telling me that instead of playing as Yellow and Blue toad in New Super Mario Bros Wii., you can play as Wario and Waluigi.
Oof man I would've preferred that honestly. Like Toads just don't do anything for me. They're so... Boring.
In a future 2D Mario game they should absolutely give us Wario and Waluigi as playable characters though

Yeah it does kinda exist because of that. I also remember in the lead up to Pokemon X and Y, before we knew what Mega Evolutions were, everyone thought the new Mewtwo form was Mewthree. XD

Some rumors I heard as a kid were absurd.
-Ridley is playable in Brawl
-You can fight Cynthia who has level 100 Garchomp, Rayquaza, Giratina, Dialga, Palkia, Arceus on her team on floor 100 of the Battle Tower
-The Game Over screen from the Spaceworld demo of Luigi's Mansion can randomly happen
-Cranky Kong a secret final boss in all the DKC games
Honestly I miss rumors like these. I found them to be very fascinating and I think it just simply gave people an imagination to think how different or fun a game would be if these rumors were actually true. That's why I always loved the Pokémon X and Y internet rumors mostly because I honestly wanted to find a reason to like the game
Yeah I kinda miss them too. Even if they were kinda frustrating, they added a bit of mystique to a game, and made the experience even more memorable.

I remember one of my friends told me that you could unlock a reverse mode in Mario Kart Wii if you beat mirror mode as ever character and then you could unlock all Dixie Kong Toadsworth and Magic Koopa. (After reading this I sound so dumb)

Honestly those characters should be playable in a new MK game, and I think at least Dixie and Kamek are in Tour but Toadsworth is still MIA.

Well you're not alone. A lot of people were also scared of Herobrine. I guess I just wasn't one of them. I thought he was super cool. XD
Couldn't play the game, when I did I never went in caves. Caves sounds only made this fear worse.
I'm better now, but when I run out of torches while caving, I bolt outta there as quickly as possible.

The biggest ones I remember were Waluigi in SM64DS, unlocking Ridley and Tabuu as playable characters in Brawl and going to space to catch Deoxys in Pokemon Emerald.
At least we got Ridley in Ultimate and Deoxys in ORAS I guess, still waiting for Waluigi and Tabuu tho 😂

DuoStuff did you see the sonic cd one and the final fantasy theory one? Those would’ve made a lot of people crapped her pants back in the old times when they didn’t know it was put in on purpose.
The Final Fantasy 8 one really hits a weird way. Like it's weirdly terrifying in an existential way.

@@DuoStuff It was a video I watched on CZcams way back in the day. I think it was just a basic video explaining how to unlock him with no gameplay footage at all. It's probably buried deep down in the tons of different video (And that's assuming the video is even still up)

Even though I was born the same year as sunshine I too was able to experience the feeling of the L is real myth thanks to super Mario 64 ds. I would scour youtube looking for how to unlock waluigi in Mario 64 ds and even though I never found him and obviously if he was in the game he’d be the first result I was a stupid kid and the magic never died.
I just think it's so funny that despite the game LITERALLY HAVING LUIGI, we still got our own version of "L is real," and we all fell for it too. XD

A friend and I would waste our time after school looking up Pokémon secrets and trying to replicate them, this was pre-2010 and we didn't really know how hacks worked but we had tons of fun nevertheless. Thanks for bringing back some good memories!
I had a lot of similar memories trying to get Deoxys and other legendaries that I don't think I could get the way I saw online. XD

I would always stay up in bed wondering if Ben Drowned was gonna come and kill me.
I used to play Donkey Kong Country Co-op with my bro. In case you don't know, when you beat a level in that game, the face of the character that reached the exit will be displayed on the world map. He was DK, I was Diddy. At the end of the level, he always wanted me to switch to him. When I asked him why, he told me it would break the game if you finished without all the levels displaying the same character. I got scared and totally believed him. I must have been like 5 or something.
I assume he just wanted to have all the bragging rights of finishing every level.
Oh yeah for sure that's why the kid was telling you that. He just wanted to be the one to beat the levels each time.
I don't think any kid from the early 2000s didn't get fooled by these things.
I was fooled thinking that waluigi was in Mario 64 ds and me and my brothers ate up all the conspiracies and a the infamous "purple prizes" fake image and really thought he was in the game.
in Mario kart ds my brother had finally got online to work and we saw a waluigi player thinking he was hacking because we didn't know that waluigi was in mario kart ds.
My eldest brother used hacks and got a herobrine skin to make us think that we were being hunted by herobrine when in reality he was just using hacks.
It's kinda wild how what felt like such a "my own friend group" thing (Waluigi in Super Mario 64 DS) was such a big part of a lot of other's experience with the game. Just like you, I was sure Purple Prizes was a real thing.
Although I did know Waluigi was in Mario Kart DS, so I had that going for me. XD

Even though it was a hoax it was some truly amazing memories.

I remember one for Kirby's Return to Dream Land. If you got all the energy spheres in both normal and extra mode, then refought Magolor Soul in Extra Mode, when his health was low you could super inhale the master crown off his head and fight the secret boss 03 as Crown Kirby.
That would be rather interesting, but terrifying considering how powerful Kirby already is.
Ah, memories. I wasted so much time on Waluigi in SM64DS. I also believed that Shadow was in Brawl, Herobrine was in Minecraft, the beta elements of Luigi's Mansion could randomly occur and transform it into a horror game, ending on the original game over screen, Sonic.EXE was based on a hidden easter egg in Sonic CD, and the first FNaF game had extremely terrifying anti-piracy measures. Good times.
Man Shadow would've made for a really neat echo fighter. I'm sad they never upgraded him from assist to echo.
Mario 64 DS was my childhood. Glad you love it as well DuoStuff.
Oh yeah it's my preferred version of 64. I know the controls are technically a tiny bit worse, but 64 also controls pretty bad anyways, and all the additions (both stars and minigames) make it by far the better version for me.

Waluigi in SM64 DS and Herobrine were probably the rumors i've believed the most.
The first was because Waluigi is one of my favorite characters and i really hoped he was in one of my favourite games. As for Herobrine well... In Italy we have a youtuber that quite some years ago decided to start a modded serie with 3 of his friends and after a few normal episodes, Herobrine appeared with all his classic signals and everything. We were kids and didn't know that mods like that existed, so we really thought it was him. The serie is called Failcraft, and it's still going to this day, but it slowly became really childish and so fake to even kids eyes. The first episodes had a really good lore, even tho you knew it was fake, but now meh, he definitey milked it too much, as well as making it too family friendly
I remember being fooled by the Waluigi in Mario 64 DS rumors, I remember this one rumor where you could unlock him by collecting every coin in the Cheif Chilly challenge stage. I never got him but that didn't stop me. Lol
I think I also heard that one as well. Obviously though, it didn't work. XD
Even though I didn't grow up during the golden age of those rumors, my parents didn't really let me go on the internet, so I believed a fair share of rumors.
Here's a list of some that I thought of while watching:
-you could unlock Yoshi and Wario in New Super Mario Bros. 2
-Vice versa for NSMBWii
-Unlock Waluigi in Mario Kart 7
-Herobrine of course
-Find legendary Pokemon at ______ in Pokemon Y and Omega Ruby
All of these were spread around daycare, and I believed all of them for a good bit.

Fun video! The only “rumor” I remember seeing as a kid was about Paper Mario TTYD. I was looking up “cheat codes” for the game and came across this site that listed a bunch of random tips, tricks, and secrets about the game.
Well, one of them was this absurd wild goose chase for the rarest badge in the game. It was ridiculously detailed and ended by saying you needed to stand still next to the train in Rogueport until the train moves off screen, revealing a secret Toad from the other side who gives you this OP badge. I was too gullible to not believe it, but also too lazy to try it xD.
It's probably for the best that you didn't believe it considering the train doesn't move without you making it move. XD
The one that I distinctly remember as a kid (in 2008) was that in Kirby 64, if you beat the game and got 100%, replay the first level, then start from the end and beat it backwards, you can get access to 4 abilities to combine. If you combine 4 bombs, then you get Nuclear bomb kirby and he would destroy the planet that you were on and you would get access to a new world that was post apocalyptic themed.
Another one was that in Mario Party DS you could walk around in Bowser's party and play as bowser if you talk to him and offer him food. Then he would be playable in Mario Party 8... Yeah I don't even know why I believed that but hey, it led to me beating the story mode with every single character praying that I could play as Bowser.
Honestly I've never heard of either of those, and so it's kinda neat to hear two completely different rumors like that. The Kirby 64 one sounds rad though. XD
I remember a (pretty well put together for the time) video of brawl, where someone showed off geno, but the game crashed as soon as the match started. there was an arrival animation and everything, a full model was made for him. you can't find the video anymore, but you can find screenshots of the assets if you look hard enough.

I told my friend that Luigi was behind the door at the top of the main floor of Peach’s Castle. I never unlocked that door.
I remember my friend telling me that there was a Thunder Mario powerup and that you could access it by going through the hole where you exit the Vanish Cap world.
So I see both of you were telling each other fake rumors about Mario 64 then. XD
It’s weird to me now since it was around 2009 when it happened, so either he had an N64 as well or he was playing the DS version 😂
When I was younger I was told by one of my friends that there was an app that you could download where there would be four puzzles and if you failed one of them then it would drain all the power in your device the first time you failed and if you failed again then your device would be unusable and I believed it... And then I found out it wasn't true after trying to find it for several weeks I decided to go round my friends house to see the app and it had been magically deleted...
Yeah, it's funny how they always seem to magically "delete it" or "lose the game" right when you ask to see it... XD
Remember those video tutorials of how to get legendaries in Gen 3 and Gen 4 Pokemon that were only available through distributions? Yeah I fell for a lot of them, the big one being Munching Orange's super old "How to Get Mew in Emerald" where so many people went along with it in the comments and I could not for the life of me figure out what I was doing wrong. I know better now, and hey, at least I have Mew in Gen 1 and Let's Go! His name is Bubbles and he's my best friend.
I had a very different reaction to Herobrine than my friends did when I was little. For some reason, I had a crush on him? And for the life of me I?? Don’t know why??? I genuinely can’t recall what prompted me to catch feelings for a ghost in the form of a block man, and to be honest, that might be scarier than the myth itself.

I remember hearing a Sunshine rumor as a kid where if you can take Yoshi to the red coin field, then you can unlock green Yoshi. I also remember hearing a rumor about a helicopter nozzle but I dont think I ever heard on how you supposedly unlocked it.
I find it interesting that a lot of people really wanted a green Yoshi. The other colors in Sunshine never really bothered me.
I got told that I could unlock ShyGuy, Drybones and daisy in Mario Kart 64 by taking out the game cart, placing it back in the console and shaking the N64 and I believed it

I remember hearing about a different method to unlock Waluigi in SM64DS. I don’t remember very much about it, but I do remember that you supposedly had to fight a rabbit king to get a key. The key would have been used on a door which would replace the blank door that you get a star from in the character selection room.
Yeah I vaguely remember that one as well. I remember seeing 2 different theoretical boss fights to unlock Waluigi: the rabbit king as you mentioned, and a giant Piranha Plant boss fight.
In first couple years of using the internet and CZcams growing up, I fell for several fake Pokémon tutorials. I remember one about how you could get ho-oh in the celestial tower in black or a shiny zekrom in dragonspiral tower.
I wasted so many hours with that Waluigi in sm64ds thing! The thing that kept fueling my interest was a youtube channel called Wwwwario that made videos talking about this guy who showed him some really convincing pictures!
I also remember watching those videos. I looked for basically any proof I could find on the internet, leading to even more wasted time. XD
When I was a kid I remember someone said you could unlock the big penguin in Sherbert Land as a playable character if you managed to to reach the centre platform. Why did I waste so many hours on this...
The dumbest rumor I believed growing up was that you could find Spider-Man in a dumpster in GTA IV, and that he would ask you for crack and then run away
Some kid told me that killing the three legendary Pokemon Uxie, Mespirit, and Azulf was okay because after I beat the Elite 4 they would reappear.
When I was younger, a kid on the playground told me that an evil Black Toad would appear as a secret boss in New Super Mario Bros Wii if you manged to beat Bowser with a Star.
I'm pretty sure that wasn't possible considering how long the corridor up to him was plus the duration of the Star. Though a little Toad fan could dream...

fun fact, the glitched whale shadow can rarely appear when sailing with Kapp'n to islands, though it wasn't believed for a long time since its so rare and was a feature fewer people would try out. you can't catch it though, it just appears in the water beneath you in the cutscene. i believe LSuperSonicQ has a video talking about it and other weird hidden video game things.
Yeah I found that out years ago after believing it was just straight up fake for years. Now the catching a whale part was obviously fake, but it's rather neat that there is some legitimacy to the rumor.
I remember one rumor about Luigi's Mansion 2 before it ever came out. There was a video about it (which is long gone), and it had a screamer at the end. I feared screamers back then, so I didn't really invest in rumors that much after that.
Oh man screamers were hilarious. I remember I would show them to my friend MJ to freak him out sometimes. He uh... Didn't like them as much. XD

This is a rather new one compared to the others, and I didn’t hear it that often, but there was this rumor/creepypasta going around about a videogame for the Gameboy called misfortune which was supposed to be hidden inside other Gameboy games like Links awakening or Pokémon red. It was a puzzle game, but the puzzles were only solvable through luck, and if you failed, you’d get a game over screen with a weird sound/song in the background that would cause anyone who hears it to die (similar to Lavender Syndrome).
I didn’t believe the YOURE GONNA DIE part, but back then I also recently heard about Totaka‘s song and so the possibility of hiding a small game didn’t seem too weird for me.

I grew up on the 3ds, so I only remember one rumor that in Pokémon X if you did a bunch of stuff then headed over to geosenge town you could fight a legendary that can KILL Pokémon, they couldn’t be used anymore, they were dead

A friend of mine once told me he found out how to exit your vehicle and punch people in Euro Truck Simulator 2, I never looked it up, but I believed it for a long time
One rumour that I’ve never seen anybody talk about but it was a playground thing, my best friend said that they were making a “sonic heroes DX” where the second boss is tails doll and he apparently uses enemies called “sonic doll” “Amy doll” and “knuckles doll”
Honestly I'd like them to do more with the Tails Doll, but the idea that it would be in a new version of Sonic Heroes is kinda funny to me. XD

DuoStuff back in my playgrounds we had rumors that were actually legit. Like no one knew you could switch colors on characters until this kid came over to my house and we picked the same character lmao. The only one that was bullshit was the waluigi one. Though I found a glitch with the help of utube where you could dive into the tree near the cannon and use it way before you are supposed to
I was never capable of doing that specific glitch, so I just used my handy dandy action replay to unlock the cannon while playing as flying metal Luigi. XD
DuoStuff i got a little story about action replay... that fuckin thing destroyed my sm64 ds cartridge somehow. I forgot what codes I tried to enter but when I went to play the game I heard waluigi and then he jumped out of the screen and then punched me in the face and then stomped on my cartridge. Purple bastard
Lol for a moment I actually thought this was gonna be a real story. But I actually used the Action Replay a lot with SM64DS to do things like see the test rooms. XD
I remember that one of the rumors to unlock Waluigi was that you had to have all the bunnies (especially the shiny white ones) and the 150 stars to unlock the canon outside the castle, then use it but instead of the roof you had to point to the peach stained glass, and then you would be teleported to the world of bunnies, something like the missions to unlock the other characters, and then defeat the king bunny and he'll give the key to unlock waluigi
And i believe all of that of course 👍 Still sounds legit if you ask me

I unfortunately didn't hear many rumours as a kid. Most of the kids at my school only played one game series (Call of Duty) so I didn't really have people to talk about video games. When it came to the internet, even by 2008 it was pretty easy to tell what was a real and what was a poorly made fake. Only fake rumour I ever REALLY fell for was Artsy Omni's Rayman in Smash Bros.
Yeah I do remember a point where it felt like the only thing people were playing was CoD. I played a little of it (mainly the zombie mode), but not nearly as much as everyone else.
The rumor I fell for a lot was Mii Outfit C in Mario Kart Wii. I even had a cheat code book that said you needed to get a bunch of points in VS mode to unlock it.
Wait an official book had a fake rumor? That's kinda wild. XD
I didn't have very many friends that spread fake rumors when I was a kid. In elementary school I had a pretty close friend in my neighborhood that we'd have sleepovers and play Mario Galaxy together for hours. He let me borrow his copy so I could finish the game, but then his family moved out of state and I still have that copy. The similar thing happened with my younger brother and his friend's copy of Galaxy 2. We accidentally stole both games hahaha
I remember I had a friend named Austin who left his GBA SP at my house and moved without coming back for it.
So I ended up with a whole free GBA. XD
I'm probably very late but I specifically remember hearing there was a Latios and Latias event based on the movie for Pokemon HeartGold, and that apparently you COULD unlock Metal Sonic in Sega All Stars Tennis is you hit him with a ball when he's in the background while playing a match against Shadow as Sonic.

For me as a kid, I was forever on my quest to find the Triforce and the Unicorn Fountain in Ocarina of Time. Eventually I decided to get a Gameshark Pro for my N64, turn on the beta quest code, and search by using that. Of course, I never found it.
Not quite a rumour, but I do remember trying to look up cheat codes for Ocarina of Time and one site claimed that if you slice your sword against a wall, it will get sharper. But I was smart enough to see through that lie though.
The triforce thing was always strange to me. I didn't really understand the idea of getting a full triforce when it works differently in Ocarina of Time. Though that game had a ton of rumors anyways.
I had Smash 64 on my Wii when I was younger, and I remember seeing a method of playing as Metal Mario where you circled around Mario I believe, like, 99 times, and I tried this for nearly an hour thinking I was doing something wrong.

We had the EGM magazine back in the day and I definitely fell for the sonic and tails one. But a guy a summer camp told me that there was a secret fire emblem level you could get by beating all star with Marth or Roy without healing or dying I forget which. But I never did it, but I did learn a lot of random ass quirks of the game going through that gauntlet over and over
Kinda surprising there *wasn't* a Fire Emblem stage in Melee considering we got a whole 2 reps from the game. But yeah, I learned as a kid eventually that if the requirement was something ridiculously hard, it probably wasn't true. lol
@@DuoStuff I don't think any of the secret characters got a stage besides game and watch, I never thought about it. But yeah you're right lol, but the challenge was too tempting. And I learned Roy technically does have a spike in melee, the third hit on the up version of double edge dance and Marth the third hit on the down version. So the more you know 😂
According to my friend Sam in elementary school you could download hypercam 2 onto your DS and somehow use it to get an Arceus with unlimited HP into Pokemon Pearl
Why would getting hypercam 2 do that? Like I straight up don't see the logic behind that at all. XD

I don't actually recall that one. (Though honestly I don't recall hearing much about XY rumors besides the Missingno one.)

when I was a kid, my friend and I thought you could get the Dark Ball that the villain in the 4th pokemon movie uses. if you caught a pokemon with it, it supposedly boosted their level to 100 and maxed their stats immediately. we uses to discuss which pokemon we'd catch with it, I think I settled on Groudon.
Huh, I don't think I got to watch the 4th movie. (I missed a lot of the Pokemon movies.) So I never could've come up with that one. XD

I swear I tried every single method to get waluigi. I remember looking through tons of forums for all the different steps to unlock him and 100%ing the game on all three profiles. I love super Mario 64 but I just gave up after realizing it was impossible lol. One interesting thing is, rumors usually gave a lot more replay ability to games. Something I value nowadays

My cousin also said that if I completed the museum and the catalogue, a "celebrity" would visit your town. I assumed this celebrity was Ms Nintendique for some reason.
Pokemon:
Pressing the A button just at the right time increased your odds of catching a Pokemon
My cousin once again insisting something crazy: She swore to me that her Budew was one she stole from Gardenia during the gym battle? First of all, she didn't use a cheating device of any kind, second of all I'm pretty sure Gardenia doesn't use Budew in her gym battle, and third of all, she traded me that Budew and it said she'd caught it in Eterna Forest. And of course, I tried catching a trainer's Pokemon and it didn't work.
Seems like your cousin made up a lot of rumors to try and fool you with. Though I also remember believing something similar with that whole pressing a button while catching a Pokemon thing.
I don’t think anyone else heard this, but I used to always hear about a secret fourth evolution of the pikachu line, kaichu, apparently if you got a raichu to level 100, and then released it, the next Pokémon you would encounter would be kaichu, the strongest Pokémon ever. I never found a thunderstone so I never could do this.
Lol probably for the best though. Could you imagine how terrible it'd feel to spend all that time getting Raichu up to level 100 only to lose and and not get Kaichu. XD
My school had “Reggiefire” too but people claimed it was “only in Japan” but “could be hacked in”
There was also a rumor than there was a small chance Yoshi would kill himself if he got “she loves me not” in the SM64 DS mini game. It was weird I know!

I remember watching some CZcams video about unlocking Bowser Jr in Brawl that in hindsight was very obviously fake but me and my brother still attempted it.
the first time i ever got rickrolled was in a video claiming how to unlock yoshi as a playable character in super mario galaxy. didn't stop me from trying out the instructions in the video description anyway.

One rumor I heard about Mario 64 was that after beating the level with Dorrie (Nessie) on 100% she would be in the moat swimming around
Oh yeah I remember hearing people talking about that. Seems like it would've been a little bit of a downgrade for Dorrie though considering there's a lot less water there. XD
The online internet rumor that I actually fell for was because my older sister told be and also believe this rumor. The rumor was for an old toy to life game called Webkinz. The rumor was there was this murderer in the game that would kill your Webkinz. So my sister and I stop playing Webkinz for like... 2 weeks and we used to play that game religiously.
Oh man the Webkinz killer. I remember hearing about that. Kinda crazy that rumor spread so far. XD

Yeah, things have definitely changed since the internet got more prominent, but eh, I'm still glad I got to experience it. =D
Some notable ones for me were Herobrine, ultra-nuclear Rayquaza(cannot remember exactlu what it was called), MewThree, amongst many other rom hacks for Pokemon that I thought were legit.
The worst thing about a lot of Pokemon rumors is that they usually had some kind of footage, even if it was fake. XD
A friend of mine told me, that training a Level 100 Pokémon enough lets it reach Level X (based on the LV.X in the trading card game).
Also Arceus will learn a new move by reaching that level.

In pokemon emerald, in the space center there's a scientist saying that they're on successful launch #whatever and I used to hear that once the scientist says that they've had their 100th successful launch he'd ask you if you want to board the next rocket to the moon where you'd be able to catch jirachi and I remember spending hours trying to get it to happen

I remember I was the type of kid to spread rumours like this.
when playing minecraft together with my friend, I was able to fly and I told him I unlocked this power after encountering and beating herobrine (he didn't believe me and knew I was just cheating). I somehow also convinced myself I actually saw herobrine, and I went into the comments of videos talking about how he's not real and told people that I saw him.
I also had friends who spread rumours, but I can't remember what they were exactly. I do remember one of my friends once told me about the worlds you unlock in mario 3d land after beating the game, but what he described was not what they were like at all. I think he said stuff about enemies coming out of portals, the floor melting away and a big lizard who chased you.
I have no idea if he actually knew about the extra worlds and what they were like, or if he had no idea they existed and he just happened to guess that they exist.
though not a rumour, I also remember how my friend, the same friend who I told that I got flight from herobrine, who I was trying to get into monster hunter, told me he had the game, but when I asked him to play it with me, he said that he lost the game. with how vaguely he described the game, I think he didn't actually have it and just told me he had it so I would stop asking him to play it.
