No, that might be Major Stede Bonnet. He was a rich wannabe who commissioned a ship from a ship-builder (most pirates did not buy their ships but acquired them in other ways) and hired a crew who knew how to sail in 1717. He was very successful for a brief time. He was hanged in 1718.

As a hearing impaired person, I use subtitles and they are golden. The addition of “glug, glug” when Max was tasting the rum in this episode was a hoot. In other episodes the added “sound effects” in writing cracked me up also. Not sure if the subtitles are created by the channel itself or transcribed by somebody else, but whoever it is, well done and thanks for the chuckles.

The trick of using another country's flag is where the terms "true colors" and "false flag" come from. The rules of war allowed ships to fly false flags, but they were required to switch to their "true colors" before opening fire. An excellent example of this is the final battle scene in "Master and Commander".

Quick note; if you DO wish to use ice in this drink, or any drink using eggs, shake without ice first. This is called the dry shake and it allows the proteins in the egg to form a rich foam (which is what you're looking for if you use eggs anyway as the introduction of egg adds a negligible flavor). If you add ice first the egg wont emulsify and you wont get a foam, or you'll get very little. Adding ice AFTER emulsifying, however, won't break the foam. If you choose to do that, though, consider omitting the water from this recipe as part of shaking with ice IS about adding (cold) water.

Here's the lyrics for Captain Kidd.
O, my name was Captain Kidd
As I sailed, as I sailed
O, my name was Captain Kidd
    As I sailed
    My name was Captain Kidd
And God's laws I did forbid
    And so wickedly I did
As I sailed, as I sailed
    So wickedly I did
    As I sailed
    O, I murdered William Moore
As I sailed, as I sailed
    O, I murdered William Moore
    As I sailed
I laid him in his gore
Not many leagues from the shore
    O, I murdered William Moore
As I sailed, as I sailed
    I murdered William Moore
    As I sailed
I spied three ships from Spain
As I sailed, as I sailed
O, I spied three ships from Spain
    As I sailed
I spied three ships from Spain
And I fired on them a-main
And most of them I slain
As I sailed, as I sailed
And most of them I slain
    As I sailed
Come all you young and old
See me die, see me die
Come all you young and old
    See me die
You are welcome to my goal
And by it I lost my soul
Come all you young and old
I must die, I must die
Come all you young and old
    I must die
It's got a very similar if not the same melody to Sam Hall and Admiral Benbow.

It’s also funny how right after Kidd was arrested by the governor in the colonies, suddenly that lowly governor became rich beyond imagination… and suddenly overnight became the patriarch of the Astor family, one of the world’s richest families… and seemingly one of the most unlucky right up until the Titanic sank taking an Astor with it and suddenly the “missing documents” that proved Kidd was not a pirate turned up... it’s as if that ancestor and governor had tricked Kidd in giving up the location of his due of the treasure but stole it all and left Kidd to literally hang, only for the family to be cursed until they lost their wealth, their heir, and those documents miraculously surfaced. If a crewman was threatening mutiny and even tried to attack me, if I saw a bucket of any material I would have smacked him with it as hard as I could, too. I suspect the “Kidd on the Deck with the Iron Bucket” isn’t as cut-and-dry murder as the history written by the victors would like us to believe… I highly suspect from all the evidence (including letters written by his wife), it points to him being left to hang (no pun intended) by the first member of the rich Astor family who within a few months of him being shipped off to England (and his letter proclaiming his innocents was intentionally sat on and only delivered back to King William III when it was too late to do any good) suddenly became wealthy enough to rival a king… like the treasure suddenly missing from a certain French ship and supposedly stolen at Madagascar despite there being no evidence of said theft-only, again, written claims of the event by Kidd himself and the colonial governor. I find it more likely he hid the treasure suspecting betrayal, but then it was either tortured out of him or his wife was threatened, so he gave up the location in exchange for his documents proving his innocents be examined, only to have them “disappear” out of the governor’s hands and him being convicted. History shows too many suspicious points to be a coincidence-and money does not appear out of thin air, but it can out of a privateer’s stolen stash.

In case anyone is interested Captain Kidds fabled treasure location said to be on the east coast of the americans is "according to a treasure map" on Sullivans island near to Charleston, South Carolina. Find the tallest rock vantage point and peer out from the narrow ledge upon its face and find the tallest tree in a grove of trees, buried there under is the treasure of Captain Kidd.

  • @MythicFool

Neat little thing with rum, there are two 'styles' of rum from the Caribbean: English and French. Depends on which colonial island you get it from. The English style tends to have more of that banana funk on the end of it, while the French styles have a pear taste to them instead. Not a hard and fast rule, but a common trend between the two styles.
