  • This is a video showing the removal of a water pump for a V6 Saturn Vue 2003, which should also be applicable for the V6 engine types for:
    1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 Cadillac Catera
    1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 Opel Sintra
    1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 Opel Omega
    1995 1996 1997 Saab 9000
    2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 Saturn L-Series
    2002 and 2003 Saturn Vue
    The list is an educated guess, as they all can use the General Motors 54° V6 engine, and as far as I can tell the V6 (if they have the V6) for the engines all have a similar setup for the water pump.
    A few tools I did not mention for the removal of the water pump are a 10mm box wrench (amzn.to/33SRNDw is a cheap set from Amazon), an E12 torx (amzn.to/2CR8WS2) , a couple of small extensions for a 3/8 ratchet (amzn.to/32WrD1B), and if you are as clumsy as I can be, a magnet on a stick (amzn.to/2NXqQZZ).
    Bright light helps a lot. A "soft" hammer (dead blow, brass, or if you feel froggy a regular framing hammer) and some type of extension to knock the water pump loose if it's stuck in place after removing the 3 E12 torx.
    Any E Torx set should work as long as it has E10, E12, and E14, amzn.to/2CR8WS2 is a link to an affordable set from Amazon.
    You'll also need a 10mm, 15mm, 16mm, and 19mm socket set. amzn.to/2QtBMAg is a link to a craftsman 3/8 set similar to what I use.
    You will also need a deep socket M10 ( amzn.to/2QsXWm8 ) for the top air shroud bolts. and a M10 box wrench for the water pump pulley bolts.
    A flat head screwdriver. Or Butterknife.
    A M10 1.5 bolt. Short, maybe 15mm long.
    Liquid Wrench, useful if you have any bolts that fight you, I actually was pretty lucky except the water pump pulley.
    In the video I didn't mention disconnecting the battery, and wearing safety glasses, or gloves. Please disconnect your battery, and wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
    Also use a catch pan for your antifreeze, unlike me, because you will still have antifreeze in your system even if your water pump failed.
    The steps are not terribly difficult, I'd rate the job at a 4/10. If you have the tools, then it's a cheapish repair. Roughly $50 for the water pump (amzn.to/2QtDwcs) and belt (amzn.to/2NYinW8). $20ish for antifreeze. Then some tools and time.
    If you don't have the tools, borrowing them or buying them wouldn't be a bad idea if repairing your own stuff seems like a thing you'd like to do.
    Hopefully this helps, if you have any questions I'll do my best to answer, thanks for watching!

    Hey hoss, just a big thank you for this and the install videos. I've got an 03 with 480k miles on it. Pumps dropping out coolant by bout half a bottle a day. I was all but ready to send it in to the mechanic for $2.5k of labor charges or more, this saves me big time. I ain't got 3k to my name at the moment, but $100 for a new pump I can definitely do. The gasket is unavailable so i'm gonna have to cut my own, but otherwise this video is exactly what I needed to be confident in doin it myself. Thank you for takin the time to make a video on this. I've done minor stuff to my car but nothing this in depth and knowing there's some experience in video out there is a big relief. Lotta stuff for the 4 banger one but not much out there on these. With any luck, I'll be toasting to your video's help tomorrow evenin.

    i have a saturn LS2 i inherited when my grandmother passed and their is a loud knocking/tapping in this area, does that sound like something a water pump would do?
    if i did decide to do it myself what other things should i replace at the same time because i know with older toyota's when doingf the timing belt we rec a water pump bing that its in the same area

    • @Crasoum
      @Crasoum  Před 2 lety

      It could be any number of things, tapping or knocking inside the engine could be the valves, outside the engine it could be loose bolts, or any bearing. Kinda need to figure out where the sound is coming from.
      But yes, it is smart to do both the pump and timing belt at the same time on this engine.

    I have a 03 Satern vue my girl was driving home and has had an issue with keeping oil and coolant in it for quite some time now she was driving home and had a complete Loss of power so she pulled over and called me when I checked the coolant tank it was empty so I topped it off I looked under the car and it was a puddle on the ground seconds after I filled it to the fill line

    My belt shredded on mine due to my tension pulley needed replaced does that mean I need to replace the water pump as well?

    • @Crasoum
      @Crasoum  Před 3 lety +1

      It is very likely the cause of the broken belt, but you would need to check what caused the belt to break.

    Is that year model Saturn Vue reliable, in your opinion?

    • @Crasoum
      @Crasoum  Před 4 lety +2

      It's not my vehicle, I just worked on it a couple of times. That being said I like Saturn, I've personally never had any issues with the ones I have owned.
      Checking reliability reports the 03 Vue seems good. For the most part the important thing is regular maintenance. With regular maintenance a lot of vehicles last until people get tired of them. In saltier snow areas this includes undercoating and washing.
      If you don't change the oil regularly, don't change the timing belt when it needs it, don't change the brake fluid, the coolant, or transmission fluid then you hasten the inevitable visit to the crusher.
      This isn't touching on items that just wear down like starters or alternators. A lot of times those go out and people junk the cars even though the fix would be less than a car payment.
      But I have very basic car requirements, I want the car to stop when I want it to stop, and start when I want it to start (in that order of importance too.) Running smoothly is the 3rd requirement.
      Anything else is a plus, but not the end of the world.

      @Joon kinloch - I think it is a very reliable car as long as you give it's maintenance. I bought my 2003 Vue V6 AWD with 80,000 miles in it. I had put an average of 12,000 miles per year. It currently has almost 250,000 miles and still runs strong. It's an excellent car in the winter too.

      I charged him around $100 for my time, that's including the timing belt and water pump (he purchased those). He's a young guy and the son of a friend, so I wasn't out to make profit.
      I have another short video on tips on doing the timing belt as there's a couple of really good videos that were done better then I would have done, but they missed some tips I would have pointed out. czcams.com/video/PZzFr0xu9Rw/video.html

      That's super unfortunate, if the engine doesn't turn then it could be seized. If the timing belt is off it could sound like a fast crank but never fire. Ton of variables for something not starting.

      @@Crasoum Try the Motorola Body Control Module. It's in the dash behind the shifter. It can also be a short in the wiring, usually not a big deal. But Saturn decided to remake the old connect with ground system ,only instead of a wiring ( loom) it has stacking electric circuit blocks under the fuse blocks. This makes it a little different. If it cranks and won't start , unhook both termanals of battery and clamp them together ( with no power) for a few minutes ( 5/10/15/20 ???) Sometimes just unhook and reconnect . And let it cool. Then they will fire up . I leave mine run while out. I keep the lock fob on me while shopping and let her run with all the doors locked. This way I'm not cursing it acting a fool a Walmart ( especially when the temp is above 90° F ). Outside temp being higher means a hotter temp , because the air is hotter making fan run longer to cool. It does great in cold weather tho. I just let her idle anyway. Thanks , now making a rattling sound at times , so I'm gonna try the water pump and timing belts first . If not then I'm digging into that fine 5 speed auto aisin trans. Lol
