    This is why wrestling is so damn great. EVERYONE has a chance to win once they step on the mat. The sport rewards the guys who work hard and show some grit in these matches. The sport doesn’t care what you accomplished in the past it only cares if you can rise to the occasion right here, right now.

    • @christianphillips4072
      @christianphillips4072 Před 3 měsíci +2

      I agree. It’s crazy because he wasn’t doing bad at all the whole match but you can tell he was not the better wrestler. He happened to catch him when he stepped over and that’s what’s sealed it. All that time on bottom trying not to get pinned took everything out of him and that’s why he couldn’t defend as well to keep him from another near fall. Great match overall for sure though

    • @turtledundee5760
      @turtledundee5760 Před 3 měsíci +6

      The reason they didn’t give him more back points when he slipped the bar in is because in iowa high school you have to let go of the hold which got you the back points and get a different hold/move for more back points and the ref considered him transferring from the honeymooner to the bar the same hold/move

    • @kristopherwilson506
      @kristopherwilson506 Před 3 měsíci +8

      @@christianphillips4072 he didn't "happen to catch him". If you look at 7:15 he snaked his right arm through and grabbed Magyana's ankle, trapping it underneath of him, then hipped into him/stepped up and put him right over that ankle to his back.
      Also, Hemsted got rode out for over three minutes -- you don't think that took it out of him? So yeah, maybe Magyana gassed out from trying not to get pinned, but if that's the case, when there's no excuse.

      @@turtledundee5760 Iowa follow NFHS rules, which is a national ruleset for scholastic sports and I believe every state follows it in the US for their schools. I know non-scholastic associations follow different rule sets but this is a state tournament. As an official myself, I would not have made the same call these officials did because the hold may have changed but he didnt have a clear break. Its like having a dude in a standard half and then switching it to a reverse nelson hold with a trapped arm, they are still in a nearfall position but that doesn't allow for another count.

    I didn't see an upset. Any time a 3A wrestler with a great record goes against anyone there's a danger. 3A schools have about 700 students to pull from and form a team. 6A and 7A teams have thousands and are 3-4 wrestlers deep in some weight classes. With good coaching and a team that size wrestlers at larger schools can hone their skills at practices and not have to depend on exposure to other schools to improve. You will almost always see better wrestlers come from larger schools. Nick Suriano had an excellent record in a soft high school competition but when he got to college freshman Thomas Gilman beat him easily. There's almost always a tougher guy out there somewhere.

    How can you call this an upset? Any time a 1A or 2A wrestler moves to 3A and 4A they face real wrestlers that have to work every week to maintain their first string slot. The exposure a 4A or 5A wrestler gets makes it unfair when they wrestle the sheltered 1A and 2A wrestlers. A typical 1A school might pull it's entire wrestling team from less than 500 students grades 9-12. A 5A or 6A school could have up to 100K students to pick from. Many top wrestlers in 1A, 2A and 3A schools would never get to wrestle at a 6A or 7A school because the talent is so deep. There are schools in Pennsylvania with over 100,000 students in one high school. Ohio has several with close to 20K students. It makes their wrestling programs far tougher than any 1A school ever could.

Pathetic how you said this loss will haunt your family for the rest of your lives. I’m pretty sure it’s only your life. After your kid eventually grows up and moves away from you he’ll forget about this match. To be blatantly honest, your son is just a good wrestler at best. The only thing better than that is being the guy who was a 3x state champ. Don’t let the one loss haunt you, let all of the other wins fill you with pride. I can tell it does and you’re a proud dad. You haven't watched enough then. There are plenty of Wrestlers who come in as Freshmen(or 7th graders, 8th graders) and are elite and they don't improve. Meanwhile, there's that state qualifier who keeps getting better.
      There are huge upsets every year. I remember when the #1 Wrestler in the Country, Destin McCauley was beat by Robbie Fischer. A guy who should have gone 6 for 6 both individually and in team titles. A kid who moved up a weight class as an 8th grader so Apple Valley could move ANOTHER 7th grader into the lineup and he could win a title at 103.
