Mercruiser 1968-1979 Wires to coil (Hard starting) Part 1

  • Mercruiser hard to start, or hard to start when warm, maybe only catches when you release the keyswitch....
    There should be a wire from the solenoid on the starter, that goes to the + side of the coil. This wire sends 12V straight to the coil while the starter is engaged, it boosts the coil voltage by about 3 volts when starting.
    An easy test if you are having a problem starting is to run a wire from + side of the batter to the + of the coil and try starting the engine. If it starts, that is the issue.
    On the solenoid (on the starter), there should be a wire that goes to the plus on the coil.
    Note, my video was cut off early, but hopefully this will be helpful to diagnose the issue.
    I made this video in the Spring of 2021, the boat ran well but I had issues with my distributor.
    Part 2 shows the Starter Solenoid and the issue with the old solinoid.

    In the Spring of 2022 I put in a Delco Voyager EST electronic ignition.. Much better with the new system than my 43 year old distributor, points, coil.

    Good video. I have a 1972 mercruiser 120 with similar problems.

    I'm currently wiring mine and I feel like the best move is to run the starter wire to positive and a 12v from the alternator to the positive. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think having a constant 12v from the battery instead of from the alternator you would burnout the coil. if you ran the ACC positive to the coil you would heat it up if you were ever listening to the stereo with the key on the on position.

      You are correct about having constant +12 going to the coil (without the engine running) being bad for the coil.
      If you want to run a stereo with the engine off, I would just hook up the stereo directly to the battery (like a bilge pump, or the blower or lights), or hook it up directly with an additional on/off switch if you are worried the the stereo memory might drain the battery. This way you are not throwing an additional variable into a known good ignition wiring system.

    This helped out with my 228 mercruiser, thank you

    I just figured out the same thing with mine. I’ll wire to a terminal where it’s switch to 12v

    Where does the resistor wire come from

    • @theOriginalBanger
      @theOriginalBanger  Před 2 měsíci

      It is factory built into the wiring harness.
      Older vehicles used a "Ballast Resistor", I think around 1970 Mercruiser started using a resistor wire.

    Can anyone help me, I have a 1986 Mercruiser 170 hp 4 cylinder and the roto cap has 3 wires coming out of it and most of the videos I have seen show only two wires one red and one black,, what would the third wire be?

    • @theOriginalBanger
      @theOriginalBanger  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I'm not sure what you mean by the rotocap. Are you talking about the distributor cap, or the top of the coil?
      Is there a chance your 1986 has electronic ignition?

      Yes I meant the distributor cap , I just bought the boat and tried to take the distributor cap off and found the back screw has a bad head so I am going to have to drill it out as soon as the weather gets better.
      That is what I wanted to see if it was electronic or points,, any I order the new distributor cap. I do have a super hot coil on it so, so it may have the electronic conversion.
      any way Thanks for getting back to me.
      Gary,,,,

      @@garymilner2544 In the distributor (with the cap removed), you can tell if you have points or not.
      There is a conversion kit that replaces the points. I have not had the best luck with point conversion type electronic ignitions.
      There is also a kit that replaces the coil and distributor. I put one in on my 79 Mercruiser 140 and it has worked flawlessly. I used the Delco Voyager EST I have a video about it: czcams.com/video/2VmXrnN9WQg/video.html
