- Marvel Comics enormous summer event, Blood Hunt, kicks off this week in epic fashion. Blood Hunt #1 from Jed McKay and Pepe Larraz is full of action, swerves and spectacle. Unfortunately, it's full of plot holes and turns that make no sense in Marvel Comics. There was essentially zero lead into vampires taking over the Marvel 616. Which presents several hurdles for Jed McKay to navigate and he doesn't succeed all of the time. Wes reviews Blood Hunt #1 and explains why there is a ton of fun to be had in the comic, it also has some major storytelling flaws. Marvel Comics Blood Hunt ignites with big action and stupid reveals.

Given all these CONSTANT earth shaking events theres no way normal people would be functioning as a normal society. Its broken that stretch of "believability"
What I find hard to understand is why anyone continues living in NYC. All I can think of is that it's an attempt by the UN to keep most of the weirdness contained to one place
That fact that most of the heroes & villains are in NYC is proof that Marvel is no more realistic than DC. In fact, it's probably less realistic.
I've been saying this for years. At least DC has/had an explanation concerning memories and HyperTime, etc.
Hey bro this is for comic book readers, smmfh get out
The vampire stories abuse has to stop. The concept has been remade to death.
Surprise double reveal, it's gona be an evil Blade Variant from the multiverse... because yall love the multiverse right?! Lmao **eyes roll**
Deacon frost already made a evil clone of Blade he's in a coffin in London somewhere
He DID! The Montesi Formula from the Darkhold. It’s how they originally killed Dracula permanently.
Captain America and Vampires immediately makes me think of Baron Blood.
Yeah ..I liked this better 40 years ago when Dr. Strange used the Montesi Formula to Wipe out All Vampires ( except Hannibal King because he had never killed for Blood )
What comic did that happen in?
I was going to mention it and it was 30 years ago during the whole Midnight Sons storyline.
@@fishin4bass2002It was a Midnight Sons crossover called Midnight Massacre.
Yeah only in the dr strange by Roy Thomas he had tò Reverse It cause his Brother had been turned in to a vampire as the new Baron Blood and then Dracula came back. It happened in early 90s
@@tyrantlizardking thanks. I haven’t gotten that far yet.
Actually the spell to wipe out all vampires is something that's existed in comics for a while. I know it played an important role early in the third volume of Doctor Strange back in the 90s
If I'm not mistaken, the kill all vampires on Earth spell was cast in a story a few decades ago. The introduction of the new villains has potential but this seems a lot like the Symbiote bomb story in New Avengers a few years back and symbiote storyline in Spider-Man a few years back.
Didn’t a recent issue of Blade claim “real vampires” were dying out and being replaced? How are there enough to be a global threat, then?
Modern marvel has no continuity
@@Mr_Robottstrue
@@Mr_Robotts Another reason why the modern writers want to chase OG readers away. So they don't get called out on their lack of lore knowledge.
Marvel got jealous of DC Vs. Vampires and forgot that series was an Elseworlds tale.
Great point.
I prefer DCeased and it's excellent mashing of zombie lore with Darkseid's obsession with the Anti-Life Equation.
Tom Taylor at his best
I'm very confident Marvel will do vampires much better, just like how DC did zombies much better.
@knocklesnar u actually prefer Marvel Zombies (Vol. 1) over DCeased....lol.
60 issues?? I hope I misheard you and it really was 16. There is no way this storyline even deserves to be 16 issues!
The joke is on the vampires. That’s not the real Captain America.
Ah, someone else who remembers that Marvel straight up turned the real Cap into a Hydra agent and gave us a dream-Cap made from magic.
Dark crystal? The dude is made out of jolly ranchers lol
Nothing surprising about turning half the heroes into vampires, what will be shocking is if they don't turn them into gay vampires.
Is there any other kind of vampire?
@@Off-Brand_Devin 😄 I forgot, Blade doesn't kill vampires because they're monsters, he kills them because he's a homophobe!
Too bad Scarlet Witch isn't a mutant anymore, because then she could just go back to using probability hex bolts instead of chaos magic.
Vampire obsession overload. Disneyfied Marvel will never get horror stories and events right.
I think the big, important question on all our minds is, 'will CGC be willing to slab my polybagged variant' issue?
Don't give them any ideas
@@PubeStache They ran out of those for awhile now and I'm pretty sure they've been fishing them from random online articles and videos as of late.
IIRC vampires were wiped out of the 616 by Dr Strange in the 80s using a kill-all-vampires spell. And Thor was involved. Looks like they are just repeating storylines from the 80s.
After the copy pasted Inferno event they made in 2022 (Dark Web), Marvel really seems to enjoy recycling ideas.
The Morbius tie-in might explain Blade's plan a bit. It seems to me that Blade is hoping to make the spell useless by infecting the other vampires with Morbius's form of vampirism, something Dracula probably could have tried but never had simply because he hates Morbius
My trust is low with these crossover events. Smells horribly cash grab
Fortunately, none of this story will last past the last issue.
Can’t believe Wanda got nerfed again
so Blood hunt is marvel's version of DC vs vampires! Got it, i guess my wallet is going to stay fat for this event!
No, it is much worse than that, DC at least is an Elseworld, this is the actual 616.
I feel like Marvel events now are underwhelming. Civil war and secret invasion were so good but stuff like Blood hunt and Contest of chaos, not so much.
The Avengers, X-Men, and Eternals event was such a waste of time. I’m glad I didn’t read it personally; I only read the summary on Wikipedia. That was the series that judged Doctor Doom to be good since he had confidence in himself and Captain America to be a failure because there were still problems in North America. Um, what!? You approve of the supervillain because he’s confident, but condemn the superhero who lives to help & defend others because he couldn’t single-handedly solve the problems of an entire continent?! Someone on here actually defended this by claiming, “Captain America deserved to be judged because he didn’t keep his promise.” What promise?!? He never promised to solve every problem on a whole continent!
@@karaoconnoraliasraidrayou are actually misrepresenting what Doctor Doom and Captain America got judged for. Although I agree that Cap shouldn't have been judged badly since he is trying to be a role model for society. But Doom was going to be given a negative judgement, but he simply refused to be judged. So, it was more like a draw on Doom. Daredevil was judged down as well, but I kinda liked where they went with that and the symbolism in it. Kinda hoped that it could motivate him in his own series for interesting stuff.
Anyway, you would know all this if you didn't stick to plot summaries on Wikipedia. And, I'm not saying buy the book and read it, just look up a review. And it's a little wild that you would look up a whole story summary to a book, because you'll be disappointed just reading a paragraph on the net. And even if you read the summary and like the summary you spoiled yourself to the book. Like I said, odd behaviour.
All the darkforce users? So they're going to ignore Darkling/Asylum II again then? He's basically the avatar of the darkforce dimension in 616. The Krakoans ignored him too, despite being a mutant.
I am genuinely concerned for Jed MacKay himself. He carried Marvel with his Moon Knight series. But I think because he was too good at his craft that Marvel has overwhelmed him with Avengers, Doctor Strange, and now X-Men. I really hope he wraps up his Vengeance series before the quality of his writing gets worse.
They did the same with Zeb Wells after the success of his Hellions run by moving him to Spider-Man.
Vampires AGAIN? Really, Hollywood?
but DC did the vs vampire thing a lil while back...lol
I liked it too
But was a elseworld type story. Blood hunt is part of main 616 canon.
@EvandroACruz still a rip-off.
I’ve heard of a couple different treatments of vampires in DC. One had a vampire bite Superman (I don’t know how. Magic, maybe?), and not only did it not affect Superman, but the vampire burned to ashes as a result of the solar radiation permeating Superman’s cells, which was awesome. The other, however, had a vampire bite Superman and convert him like an ordinary human being, because DC generally doesn’t want Kal-El/Clark to have Jack squat nowadays.
@KardboardKenny And DC ripped off Marvel doing zombies. I really gope you're not just now finding out how they two ape each others' ideas
Btw the blade run showed adana being killed which released the darkness to the world which probably affected blade to do this.
Plus he made a few trips to Hell where he was doing all kinds of questionable shit
Plus he drank Dracula's blood
@@carlycrays2831 yes! yes he did
I'm going to take a swing here and say maybe Blade is getting mind controlled? Just spitballing here, trying to give MacKay the benefit of the doubt, not that it's deserved.
Vampires in manhattan were done better in the midnight suns video game
Yeah Sin and Dracula were pretty decent antagonists.
Please make it stop
Another “event” that would have worked better as just issues of a regular series. Editorial keeps hijacking story’s for these forced events… I wonder if part of the motivation for this whole event is to raise the profile of Jed McKay heading into the X-men relaunch…
Who are all these nobodies that right ringing the tie-ins? Preeti Chhibber, Ashley Allen? Never heard of them. I’m surprised Tini Howard didn’t try to weasel her way into this whole thing.
Marvel saw DC vs Vampires and was like, "Let's copy that!"
Wanna bet in the end Blade dies and gets replaced by his lesbian daughter just in time for that to also happen in his MCU film debut?
No bet
We know there is a Blade comic coming out
about on par as both versions of the "capt America's hail hydra" moment.
Not again.
Vampire U-Foes?
Did you get your fake red vampire teeth?!
A world at war! The death of an Avenger? A hero betraying his friends for the enemies that he spent his entire career fighting? How so Secret Empire of them!!!
I don't appreciate this execution but I am keen on the idea of Blade taking leadership over the vampire nation.
Essentially if Blade decided to stop using half measures, and committed an atrocity against humanity to gain the vampire's trust. Blade would ascend to power, and then use that power to use political tactics to set vampire against vampire in civil war, well, I'm all on board for that story.
Blade could use that kind of shake-up in his comics to create an iconic stories.
I think the Morbius tie-in explains this. Dracula hates Morbius and would never use what he considers a lesser form of vampirism. Other rogue vampires have gone after Morbius to try and use his disease, but never Dracula. If Blade can use Morbius to give vampires a better deal, then I get why so many would follow him over Dracula
Is Mackay finishing Jason Aaron's stupid vampire storyline from Avengers?
It seems so odd. While I'm perfectly fine with these changes to characters that may get more attention in the MCU, Blade turning on the Earth-I don't get it. I want to give it a chance because I'm zombied out and glad that Marvel is not using them for this event. Well, I'll pay attention to it for now.
While it is a bit of a stretch, we know Blade unleashed a terrible demon and drank Dracula's blood. And not only did he drink Dracula's blood, but the two of them also came to a sort of mutual understanding.
Blade, along with the other heroes, also just saw the whole thing with the mutants and Orchis. I think Blade legitimately believes that he-and the vampire cult he controls-can offer the world something better
What do you think of the 2099 marvel titles? So so far I’m liking X-Men 2099. Though I am a little upset there’s no wolverine.
@@DanielRuiz-oq9cy no, X-Men 2099 is earth 928. The new Ultimate X-Men is earth 6160
Is Blade true vampire form coming out.cuz issue 10 was odd or felt rushed.
I don’t care about vampire stories to begin with, combine that with my lack of enthusiasm for marvel and marvel events and this is a big no.
Miles are killing vampires? Well, this make him pretty different from Peter in many ways. I don't will follow this event because it's just another cash grab and I not a fan of vampires stuff.
I thought the super vampires explaining their powers was funny, it's the same thing they do in anime. The staff of this comic are clearly fans.
And the Marvel Universe will NEVER be the same. Again.
Strange has used the Montesi Formula before, back in the 80s. Marvel wiped out all vampires for a bit. Doctor Strange #58-62.
Yo what's up Thinking Criticalytes!
I really feel people are sleeping on this entire NEW Golden Age . The way it flips the age old Retcon comic troup in a complete 180 has huge implications.
The Montessi Formula?
It already sounds like DC vs vampires.....if nothing interesting is out today I might get it but it just another cash grab on a larger scale....and making blade the leader isn't as interesting as Nightwing being vampire lord....
Marvel vs Vampires...in spring...and at least they waited until they canceled Blade at issue 10 to start a vampire event...
Gasp the vampire character is vorking vith the vampires? I never sav that coming:)
Brian Hill was a big letdown to Blade. Nothing looks or reads promising these days. I can't believe they expect fans to keep chugging their endless event kool aid.
His Batman book made me never read him again he sucks
I really liked his Blade run 🤷🏻♂️ I hope he picks it back up after this event is over
This is already feeling like a shounen anime fighting tournament style arc with the way this was explained to me 😂
It might be not too terrible but I’m gonna be very checked out on this event.
So will we have werewolves next?
Bloodstorm one appeared in nightstalkers in the 90s. All the other ones are new
As many have said, vampires have passed their spectacle date. So that already made any of this a pass for me. But also sounds like there is very little rigor in the writing room, so many deficiencies from the start is not encouraging for the rest. Sad.
Awesome work mate
Black Panther is definitely turned according to solicits
All the current writers are c and d-list writers ,who are treated as a-list..none of them read like at any point growing up they thought i want to be a writer and did everything they could to learn the craft...instead its like comics are considered cool and all my friends say i have good ideas so i'll get a job in comics.
So, Marvel Zombies with Vampires....
Did Vida Illela (sp) come up with the story?
Dr. Strange did have a spell that wiped out all of the vampires. It's located in
the Dark Hold. He casted in the late 79-81. In a fight with Dracula.
Thle new avengers hq is impossible city which i agree doesnt make sense
Hopefully this won't bring back the trend of comic titles starting with Blood.
I came here for the spoilers
Turn Jubilee into a vampire that'll be a novel idea.
Most of the editors are amnesiacs judging by how many recycled ideas they reused in the past years so they might think THIS idea is really a new one.
There is a lead in to this with the FCBD issue that gives more as to what has started here. Well when you are only ONE issue in it is hard to say what they do with Blade here is "stupid" cause there is the rest of the story to be told. Maybe Blade is suckering the Vampires and only making them think he's on their side? Maybe it's not the real Blade? Again too early to call. At only 4 core issues yeah I will bet they are jamming alot into it which may be detracting from the story flow. Now the bigger question is IF you had a spell that could destroy all vampires why the hell haven't you used it yet?! Explain that to me. That makes my head wobble more then anything. WTF20.
@@jackiechun6540 That is true.
I have A question about smallville season eleven. Do you consider it canon or do you prefer that crisis on infinite earths cameo ?
All the bad stuff aside, From an editorial point of view, if they had timed the blade reveal and the new villians reveal at the same point and cut the scenes together it would have paced much better and been more of a shock, To be honest, I ( like I am sure everyone else did ) instantly saw that blade had turned as soon as he wasant on the truck… it was an obvious thing.
Really appreciate your channel, Wes.
You've saved me so much money and directed me toward quality material i might've ignored.
Especially when it comes to Mark Millar and all the fantastic stuff he did with Big Game.
I need all his comics in Absolute editions
New villains never to be seen again.
I think the confusion with the city being compromised but still able to teleport Falcon can be explained if comics still have narration boxes that clears up any ambiguity in the story. I really miss that aspect from modern comics, as well as thought balloons.
Blade being the twist at the end....could be seen a mile away..so predictable. Big Pass.
Is this version better or worse than the DC vs Vampires one?
So this is the new big event for Marvel really?
I don't care. Won't read.
Damn..wes is gutting this thing with simple logic..
I liked it. Solid art. Summer blockbuster action. It’s what I expected. I’m sure everything will revert back to normal by the end.
Pathetic
Still no BESSIE the Hell Cow
Smdh... But Dracula is back for the 90th time
I don't understand this complaint about how Blade's actions make no sense, goes against his character and hasn't been explained. A constant complaint about comics is that characters are never allowed to evolve other than minor changes to their status quo, yet EVERY SINGLE TIME it's happend (Stevil, Three Jokers, Shadowland, Punisher, this, just to name a few) the famdom has a tantrum. Have some damn patience and an open mind.
As for the twist, what's the point of a surprise reveal if it's telegraphed beforehand? In the entire recorded history of fiction the best, most memorable and impactful twists are always completely out of the blue. Its been less than 2 fucking pages since Blade turned. Maybe give it a a few panels to see how it plays out before declaring it shit.
It's Morbing Time, again?
I think to trash the reveal as it happens, I think you will be right, you should wait. I will give the story a few issues to see if the reveal makes sense. As I said, I don’t have much faith in Marvel but I will give it two more issues until I agree with you. Keep up the great content.
Why has jed mckay done this- issue 1-6 :generic new random 6 villians to fight all members of avengers team issue 6-12 :generic new random 6 villians to fight all members of avengers team
Blood hunt : generic new random 6 villians to fight all members of avengers team 😂
I thought pepe s art was fine
Yeeeeeeah that's definitely not blade. I bet we're supposed to think the real blade is working with miles
Why would you expect Blade's heel turn to be explained in the first issue? Do you guys need your hands held through everything? These are just complaints for the sake of complaining.
Wes, you need to do a video on Dan Buckleys interview w icv2. What a joke. I have some things I need to say. 😅
I though the event happened within a couple of hours. The first timing was -12:11 and the last timing shown was 01:23:19 (hh:mm:ss).
Calling Falcon as Captain America is so weird, since we have Steve currently active. Falcon, the DEI hire in Avengers.
1). Mundus (Devil May Cry) called and wants his gimmick back. 2). Did Marvel ever retcon the destruction of the vampires with the Montesi Formula (1983) or did they just forget/ignore it? I know vampires have been used since 1983, I just can't seem to find an explanation; or if there is one. 3). Jim Cornette would call this "lazy booking."
I really hope that the other heroes would actually respect the man rather than just his abilities as a symbol of hope. I think both Captain Americas should fight villians that are the real threat. Beside just Red Skull and Hydra, the corruption and laziness present in US government and the military whose actions lead to the betrayals of its fighting men and women as well as its citizens in general. Captain America should be more than a meaningless star spangled lie. Mostly Steve Rogers but Falcon also.
I think people forget blade went evil before during the midnight massacre after being exposed to the darkhold, so this may be a similar situation, but blade as a villain isnt something to laugh at because he decimated the supernatural community the last time and if that focus is now on humanity it could be bad
Miles is NOT Spiderman
Yes he is
@@knocklesnar no he’s not
Who is still buying these huge crossover events? I stopped years ago and never regretted it.....
Deacon Frost made a evil clone of blade already he's in a coffin in london somewhere 😊
Rofl. Poor Blade.
Sorry, but Blade would be on my sus alert the minute he showed up at the sanctum during a full-on vampire invasion not covered in blood mayhem. The way he is asking questions was unnerving. Yet Doctor Strange didn't have any magical barriers or spells against vampires. Really? The Sorcerer supreme who can look into possible futures couldn't find out was responsible for this. Ridiculous.
All of those people in all of those cities killed off and strung up, and by November, there will be no mention of it. Blade will be back on the shelf somewhere, and thor won't have a giant hole in his head. Dr Strange will be in one piece again and no mention of the millions dead and vampires everywhere. The art was good, and i did like the action, but this mess came out of nowhere. It'll go back to nowhere soon enough.
I only following this comic for the Pepe Larraz art, everything else is meh
I just decided to completely skip this event. Normally this kind of story would actually appeal to me, but it just feels like just yet another meaningless, expensive event that won't add anything extra in the end. No, thanks, I'll pass. 😒
