I think because he doesn't look like he is acting.. You 'feel' his performance here....down n out, she is the uptown girl, she gives him a chance...she trusts him and it's palpable.
I prefer to remember him for his brilliance in everything up till The Godfather. After that self-loathing, willfulness, overeating, and other excesses made him more a figure to be scorned/and or pitied than admired. Here in this film, he’s incomparable. That’s how I choose to remember him.

Whatever... He became he was still brilliant. I saw a dry winter season yesterday with him in a tiny role and ooh lala.
