My Wish: Alex Ovechkin Practices With Sam

- After overcoming lymphoma, Sam gets the chance to practice with Alex Ovechkin.
In 2010, Sam was diagnosed with acute t-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma. Chemotherapy prevented him from doing his favorite thing: playing hockey. With the tumor almost completely gone, Sam was able to get back on the ice. He wished to meet Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals.
"My Wish" is a collaborative effort with Make-A-Wish that chronicles the granting of unique sports-related wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions.

As an Islanders fan, I respect Ovechkin so much. He has done countless number of these for young kids. Such a class act.
People may think of ovechkin as not a nice guy but this proves that he is a class act. I love when athletes do the make a wish. It's a great thing

I wish to meet a lot of NHL players. It would be awesome to practice with them. NHL players are so classy.
I was diagnosed with diabetes 3 years ago at age 17 and was forced to retire from playing hockey. Still have a passion for the game, and for my team, the Anaheim Ducks. Probably will never be given the chance, but I'd love to meet Ryan Getzlaf one day.
My fav team is the ducks to! I would love to meat them. I was diagnosed with seizures when I was 11. Keep kicking diabetes butt!

It is stories like these that just reaffirm to me everyday why I live sleep and breathe sports. These athletes do so much off the rink or field which is awesome. Ovi is a great player and an even greater man!

Awesome! These kids are so brave I could only hope that, faced with the same adversity I could respond with have the courage these people have. God Bless you Sam and all the other my wish/ make a wish participants.

***** It is not part of his contract. This all started because of a daughter of a worker on the Capitals franchise wanted to meet him (the story is on a forum but I can't find it). That was back when he was a rookie and since then he has been giving tickets and meeting fans like Sam.

***** Ovi does this all the time. Even if it is under contract, it doesn't mean he doesn't enjoy helping others and making their lives better even by the smallest amount. He's a real nice guy with a humble personality.
