- Just taking a quick look at the Goosebumps (2023) reboot series! This also gave me an excuse to revisit the Goosebumps Books by RL Stein and the Goosebumps show from the 90's.

1:20 Ah Yes I do remember Are You Afraid of the Dark? One of the Best Nickelodeon Shows from the 90's along with All That Kenan and Kel those where good times
It was one of my absolute favorites! I also loved Tales From The Cryptkeeper and Archie's Weird Mysteries
I enjoyed it but definitely agree, it's not scary at all. Justin Long is one of my favorite modern scream queens.
Speaking of, have you watched the reboot of Are You Afraid of the Dark? It's pretty good too and season 3 finally went up on Paramount+ recently!
Oh wow I actually haven't watched the Are You Afraid of the Dark reboot, I'll definitely check it out though, it wasn't even on my radar 😅
Justin Long Was so much fun in this for sure
did you know they released Good Burger 2 movie on Paramount+? I'll plan on watching to relive the funny dynamics of Kenan & Kel from the first movie
Oh wow, Goodburger is one of my best friends' favorite movies he used to do a yearly watch party for it
Great review Ren I'll might revisit this New GooseBumps Series next Halloween season
Hopefully season 2 will be airing by then as well!
Thank you. Interesting to hear your reaction and comparison with the 2023 version with its older screen and print versions. I guess the 2023 Goosebumps wanted a scoobie gang show and also tried to appeal to both the younger book readers and the older teen viewing audiences. So your comment about looking older but feeling younger.
Exactly! It's still a really fun series that I found very enjoyable though
Great review. Completely agree about the book recoverings.
Looking forward to your next reviews. A bit of a bright light in a very awful 5 days so far.
Thank you so much, that means a lot to me!
I've had a rough go of it the past few years too, so I'm really happy for any opportunity to give anyone else a little moment of levity during some awful times ❤️
lovely job always nice to hear your voice now and then
Thank you ❤️
3:03 I sometimes watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer on Hulu around the Spooky Season
I rewatch Buffy off and on periodically, it's one of my comfort shows despite the horror themes 😂
2:27 I never watched Pretty Little Liars is that show on MAX or some other streaming Service?
Looks like it's on Hulu and Max, it's a very fun but incredibly trashy teen drama, the first couple seasons were pretty good but it goes off the rails in a big was as it goes on 😂
When I taught returnees I had a good sized library. I had maybe 15 to 20 different Goosebump books that my Aunt bought second hand and sent to me. Oddly Harry Potter, The Babysitter's Club, The Boxcar Children and Goosebumps never appealed to me in the 60s growing up, in the 70s when my baby sister was growing up nor the 90s and 00s when I taught returnees. But after watching the movies with my students, I read and enjoyed the Bridge to Terabithia and Where the Red Fern Grows. For the former, I regretted deeply but understood why Leslie had to die and died like that. I guess I'm a Newberry Award reader. Thank you.
I saw the movie for Bridge To Terabithia and it absolutely destroyed me! We were supposed to read the book in 6th grade, but the summer before 6th grade one of our classmates actually drowned in the Okanogan River, so we read Where The Red Fern Grows instead.
I think the Goosebumps books didn't come out till the 90's but they definitely weren't for everyone and aren't really "all ages" books the way some of those Newberry classics are 😅
Finally finished this. I actually thought it was supposed to be 8 episodes, didn't expect a quasi-eldritch statement on the true nature of humans to be fast tracked in the final 2 episodes! I think they had a lot of really great ideas, but most of them weren't executed as effectively as could be. They started really strong with that hellfire football game and I don't think they ever really recaptured that feeling the rest of the season. The cast is really what saved it, and even when things were falling all over the place, it was a fun ride. I kinda wish they had done a little more with the notebook idea.
Also, hqve you seen the fairly recent movies? Or did you leave them out of this purposefully
Yeah I agree they definitely sort of fell off after a fairly strong initial start!
I actually haven't seen the new movies either 😅
Definitely intrigued to see where they go!
I actually enjoyed the first of the movies a good amount. The second not so much, but it was a fun premise and much more in line with the classic representation of the books visually.
@@renrants
Heey!! Since I missed the premiere I'll wait to watch this. I just finished episode 8 but I wanted to help ENGAGEMENT. BBS!
I appreciate you ❤️❤️
Thank you! 1 episode to go! Stupid work getting in my way lol@@renrants
@windgraceproject ugh so rude 😂
I enjoyed it, though I agree with you that this season easily could've just been eight episodes and that's it. Funny thing is that, due to my being out of the loop on everything that isn't Star Trek or Star Wars, I didn't know the new Goosebumps show was coming out until four days before the first five episodes were going to drop on Disney+. And I only found out about it because I went onto the Goosebumps Wiki to look up stuff for my review on the first episode of the '90s Goosebumps series, which I own, and watched, on VHS, and the poster for the new show appeared on the Wiki's main page. Naturally it got me hooked into watching it. Mostly because Isa Briones and Justin Long were gonna be on the show. Oh Ren, you should see what Scholastic has done to change the covers for all of their '70s, '80s, and '90s books. Animorphs, Goosebumps, The Babysitter's Club, all of Gordon Korman's books, standalone and series, and other books that I probably haven't even thought of. It was a whole thing with them in the late 2000s and early 2010s.
Oh wow very cool! I've been checking out the original show and it's so much fun 😂 I do think Are You Afraid of the Dark is scarier though as the shows go.
I had no idea they did that with so many covers, I wonder why! Where they all as ugly as the Goosebumps ones? 😂
@@renrants I didn't get to watch Are You Afraid of the Dark, but I remember my classmates talking about it when I was in grade 1 since it had just started at that point. The Haunted Mask was definitely an interesting choice to start a TV adaptation of Goosebumps with though.
Oh yeah, it was part of their attempt to modernize the old books. With Gordon Korman's books, particularly the older ones from the '80s and '90s, they changed the cover just about every time a new edition came out, so it wasn't that big of a deal, and I think they didn't change the covers for The Babysitter's Club too much, but with Animorphs they tried to do a whole relaunch of the series in 2011, with updated pop culture references, and mistakes the author made in the first few books (before they'd completely figured out the lore) changed, they only got the first seven books re-released but the series didn't sell, partly because of the covers they used (definitely check them out on the Animorphs Wiki), but also because Animorphs fans didn't care since they had all the books anyway. Fans are mixed on the covers they used for the relaunch. So when the eBooks for the entire original series came out they went back to the original 1996-1997 covers for those first seven books.
@tgif1345 woah that's actually really fascinating! I never relsly read animorphs when it was popular, but I remember thinking the original covers were really cool
@@renrants And it really was only popular for the original 1996-2001 run of the series since there was no sequel series and all the spin-offs and prequel books came out during the original run. I loved Animorphs, including the bad Nickelodeon/YTV/Global TV adaptation. I didn't have anywhere near as many of the Goosebumps books, but I still enjoyed the ones I did have.
MOTH SHIRT I never got into the Goosebumps show though i did read several of the books. I don't even like horror but they were so popular at the time I just ended up reading them anyway. I have enjoyed having Pushing Up Roses review the old show's episodes though. And uh, good review for this too.
Oh weird I thought you requested a review of the new Goosebumps show for some reason 😂😂
@@renrants Hah, huh I wonder who it actually was. At least you seemed to mostly enjoy it.
@YumLemmingKebabs I did, it was really fun!
You did request Nimona though, right? I'm reading the graphic novel now to get ready to review the movie :)
@@renrants Yeah. I haven't read the GN myself but I hear it's different in a lot of ways.
So far it's very different, but very good, I think the adaptation made some really interesting choices
Yeah this was my take on it too. I had some issues with the logic of the plot but enjoyed it overall.
Yeah, that second ending really was ill conceived
In the show, say cheese and die again, the class dont have their photo taken but only the teacher. The teachers faith is revealed, he loses his hair
You are correct about the show, in the book Say Cheese And Die Again, the teacher takes a picture of the whole class
As a 90's baby who loved the books, it wasn't scary at all but honestly, I actually really enjoyed it for all its campy fun! Some episodes really got me laughing.
I really liked it too, even though it wasn't scary it was still really fun!
Well I've only got to seeing the first 5 or maybe 6 episodes of this New Goosebumps Series on Disney+ and for whatever reason stopped halfway through
I also stopped and started and it took me a while to get back into it 😂 but I'm glad I finished it
5:37 didn't know the teen actors from the new Goosebumps series was from Star Trek Picard good to know
One from Picard and one from Strange New Worlds
hmm didn't know that@@renrants
since u liked are you afraid of the dark more, did u see the 3 season revival?
I started watching that, I didn't finish it yet but it wasn't bad, although I think some of the magic of Are You Afraid of the Dark was how scary the stories still were even knowing they aren't real, so the choice to make the stories real for the kids put me off a smidge even though it was a mostly fun show, I'll probably go back and finish it at some point in the near future
@renrants ive talked about the are you afraid of the dark revival series on my channel. ive never been a fan of the older show and i cant stand season 1 of the revival but i do enjoy a lot season 2 and 3. they r a bit darker. yeah i understand going from scary stories, to having real monsters and ghost would be strange. the revival is canon to the older series, so now i wonder if all those stories were real u know. plus in the older series, the silver sight ep had them facing off a real super natural creature remember? for some reason that ep isnt on paramount plus
Interesting, I'll keep plugging along then, I didn't hate the first season, but it certainly didn't grab me. 😅
I watched the series as a kid so I definitely have Nostalgia goggles for it now, I did do one video talking about some of the episodes that scared me the most as a kid 😅
I actually don't remember the Silver Sight episode, I may have missed that one when it aired
@@renrants yeah i didnt have cable growing up, so i never watched it. caught the last season on youtube, when i was in college. watched the 1st season a few months ago and just couldnt finish. i grew up with goosebumps since middle school. in college, i watched rl stines the haunting hour. the 1st season was so good and dark. by halfway in the 2nd season, they hit u with the whole moral lesson crap
the show has been renewed for a 2nd season but with a new cast
Okay that's extremely exciting and exactly what I wanted
well at least this New Goosebumps Series is much scarier then the new Five Nights at Freddy's movie that just watched on Peacock last night and HATED IT I wouldn't recommend it
I heard it wasn't very good, I might still give it a look though 😂
The show has moments the cast is great
Totally agree! They were honestly all so good in their roles
its an alright show but a terriblr adaptation (minus 9 and 10 those were awful)
Yeah I really liked it as it's own thing but it definitely didn't feel like Goosebumps
@@renrants they literally got everything wrong
@reptile1687 I mean I'm fine with taking inspiration rather than a direct adaptation, but it felt like they hardly even needed the Goosebumps IP at all 😅
@@renrants yeah but they could atleast have them work the way they did in the books
Yeah that would have been nice 😅
Kids in the 90s were smarter then the adults. Remember the movie "Home alone"?
Teens in 2023 are stupider then the kids of 90s. Nothing but annoying teens.
So now everybody wonders why 80s and 90s were the better then today.
I was wondering what kind of earring you were wearing, well somebody have to be whispering in your ears to find out what they are.
You did not like the book covers, so now you decided to promote the old book covers with your earring. I get it, this is your kind of justice.
Can you blame the book covers, when they are decided by the top level marketing team, rather then the author or artist? Welcome to the future, it is going to be fun.
The future is like, not great so far 😂 give me the old goosebumps covers back 😭
@@renrants Here is my advice.
You can either start a petition for the change of those book covers back to its original, or you can ask if people want the original books covers and then take the pre orders for these books.
I am pretty sure you will lose this battle either way. At the end of the day you need many people who are willing to buy those original cover books.
I watched this new show called "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" up to 3 episodes, but I don't want to watch it anymore because of the 3 annoying teens in it.
I will only tolerate annoying teens in a comedy show, but this is not a comedy show. There is nothing funny in it.
I never want to see any annoying teens, so now this show which I actually wanted to watch is completely dead to me.
Oh how tragic 😂
Luckily I still have my old goosebumps books at my parents' house so at least I still have some of the old covers 😂😂😂
@@renrants To tell you honestly, I don't like when old things change.
But, I also get bored very easily, and my attention span seems to be decreasing as I get older.
So, I welcome the changes as long as it is not damaging and destroying.
I used to read and also collect a lot of books, but now I don't anymore.
That time in my past is like a phase to me now.
Sometimes it be better to let it go, then hang on to what you really don't need it anymore.
I just feel like with the constant influx of new stuff, there's no reason to go back and change the old stuff 😂
I'm deifnitely a collector, but I try to be reasonable about it 🤔
