Im a fireman on the Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway. A few weeks back we had Flying Scotsman on display outside our locomotive sheds, and i had the absolute pleasure of helping the support crew gear her up and get her ready for moving south the next day.
I had the chance to talk to the Operations manager for Flying Scotsman/The NRM while i helped prep the loco. Unfortunately its stale news for Green Arrow. The NRM dont want to overhaul it, and the only way it will ever see a fire in its belly once more is if someone offers the NRM a substantial amount of money for its purchase.
Unless someone can buy Jeremy Hoskings or Pete Waterman one pint too many to sign a cheque or hand a credit card over Green Arrow is going to be trapped for a long time to come :-(
Well to be fair the reason why Green Arrow can't be overhauled is due to the monobloc cylinders, Green Arrow just so happened to be one of the few locos in the class to never have it's monobloc cylinders replaced. Replacing them now would be extremely expensive, whether it's casting a new monobloc cylinder or replacing it entirely with separate cylinders. The NRM say they don't have the money to do this, but I hope one day they can get it back on the mainline.

@Blackbird Gaming Not to mention, the monobloc could be displayed in the museum, and separate ones could be fitted if the engine were running.
I've always had a special place in my heart for the Green Arrow, both the superhero and the locomotive, so I'm very happy that you managed to get round to this one Chris - very well done ;)
The V2's and Green Arrow for me some of the most attractive engine around
It's not mentioned by Chris in this video, but a famous chapter in the V2 story occurred in 1953, when a few were loaned to the Southern Region, to fill in for the Bullied Pacific's, which had been grounded after the Crewkerne incident. I've seen a photo of a V2 at Waterloo with the "Bournemouth Belle". Other types were borrowed too, such as B1's and Britannia's, but the V2's were the most famous.
Very good piece on Green Arrow (and the V2s) there 👏 I was lucky enough to travel behind it once 10 years ago before the loco was retired. A worthy engine in the world of preservation I'd say 🚂

Its all the monbloc V2s for me. Lack of outside steampipes, like Chris pointed out in his 28XX video.
Yeah. I like the prarie wheel configuration.
It also has A Route Availability of 6, meaning it can work on 40% of the LNER's route miles, capable to pull heavier fast goods and fast passenger trains on some of the route that heavier steam locomotive and diesel locomotive can't go on due to their Higher Number In RA of 7, 8 or 9, such as The A1/A3s, A4s, BR Class 28, 44, 45, 46 and whatnot.

Is it safe to say that the LNER has the most sole survivors compared to the other companies of the big 4?
BR was pretty merciless when it came to getting rid of steam. I believe that the Eastern Region got the short end of the stick when it came to preservation but I could be wrong. I'm surprised that 6 A4s made it into preservation where BR tried to scrap all the A3s (Flying Scotsman survived) and managed to scrap all the original Peppercorn A1s. I think someone tried to save A4 Silver Link but BR wouldn't allow it.

From what I've surmised, the BR top brass were arrogant prats who all had giant sticks shoved up their asses when it came to their hatred of preservation, and they often had historically-significant locomotives scrapped out of spite.
Mmm...maybe. LMS has a load of sole survivors, especially since they absorbed all of the small and big Scottish railways. Southern has lots of duplicates, and there's an army of GWR locos left, few of which are sole survivors (Not counting the small Welsh engines)

You know what's funny? When I first saw the title card right before I clicked, for second I thought it was Flying Scotsman.
The V2s are a good engine they stood in for express trains if a Pacific failed

Russell Streak Yes I heard about that as well from a documentary called Green Arrow Goes West when Sir Nigel Gresley 60007 failed the NRM had Green Arrow to take the train to Plymouth and Ray Towel said the V2s supported the Pacifics including the A4s with their passenger work he also said Madge Wildfire failed at Peterborough and a V2 took over the train
There was always one V2 sat at Peterborough North to stand in for a failed Pacific coming up from King's Cross.

Quite common on - the Newcastle-Liverpool expresses as far as Leeds (from either way), the Newcastle-Bristols as far as Sheffield, any London - Leeds semi-fast, the Glasgow - Aberdeen's, the Edinburgh-Aberdeen's, the totally weird Peterborough-Edinburgh fill-in expresses (often shared with the A2/2's) and a lot of work over the Waverley line.
There would been 5 Gresley V2s in preservation alongside Green Arrow

I needed to know why don’t just dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so that they can extend the unused abandoned underground stations.
Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock and that includes the class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign them an overhead line and also make them into Five cars per units and also having three Disabled Toilets on those Five cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 8-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into an 11 car per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers.
A Stock Trains and also having 8 Disabled Toilets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it bigger and extend it to the bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Train tunnel into a High-Speed train?
The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Train line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. then put the modernised 11 car per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbished 11 cars per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 37 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project that is OK for London Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden.
oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden Easily.
Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly line and also build brand-new underground train stations so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street and also make another brand new tunnel train station in Chingford could they extend the DLR?

Could you also convert all of the 1973 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to make more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and they can order Every 17 Octagon and Hexagon shape LNER diagram unique small no.13 and unique small no.11 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 117MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 117MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units can they use those class 55’s, class 44’s, class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 18 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those interesting Journeys Please!!!!, oh can you make all of those Coal Boxes’s 16 Tonnes for all of the 117MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us PASSENGER’S!!! so please make sure that the Builders can do as they are Told!! And please do something about these very important Professional ideas Please Prime Minister of England, the Prime Minister of Sweden, the Prime Minister of Germany, the Prime Minister of Italy, the Prime Minister of Poland and that Includes the Mayor of London.

A great engine. Pity she's unlikely to run again anytime soon. In regards to LNER-built locomotives, there aren't that many left. Representing express passenger are Flying Scotsman, the six A4s, Morayshire, Tornado and Blue Peter, mixed traffic is represented by Green Arrow, the two B1s, The Great Marquess and the K1, and there's nothing representing heavy freight.
Of those just Scotsman, Tornado, 61264 and the K1 62005 are operational with all of those being mainline approved. 60007's under overhaul in the NRM, 60009's under repair at the ELR (AGAIN), 60019 and Blue Peter are under overhaul in Crewe, 61306's under repair at Carnforth which will see it issued with a new mainline certificate & The Great Marquess is awaiting overhaul after a crack was found in the firebox at the NYMR.
Don't forget Prince of Wales, which is still being constructed.

Robert Sowden The NRM has no plans to return 4771 to traffic again. From what I heard, one of the monobloc cylinders cracked, meaning the whole cylinder needs to be replaced (which will cost a lot of money). I think the engine was also due for another overhaul so the cost of a new cylinder block, added to the cost of refurbishing the boiler and the mechanics of the engine, simply makes returning it to working condition out of the question for the time being, especially since so much money was needed to fix the severe mechanical problems of 4472/60103 so that it could return to traffic.
The reason the NRM wont overhaul her is because of how much they blew on the A3's restoration as that was around 6 million quid and it will cost around a hundred thousand or near million just to replace the V2's monoblock and because it was cast as 1 whole unit and with the center block being knackered the whole lot will have to be binned. Then there's the cost of the boiler, wheelsets, tender & other parts plus the fitment of AWS, TPWS, OTMR & GSMR.
Only chance we have of seeing her run again is if somebody was to pay the bill for the new monoblock and the boiler.
Would be good if Hosking was to foot the bill for the V2's restoration as he's made a fortune with the locos he currently has and he can afford to perform multiple overhauls to keep engines running as that's what's being done with 5029, 60019 & 60532.
Hosking for the monoblock and other parts with Riley tackling the boiler and fitment of the mainline equipment. If cash was no object I would certainly fund her restoration to mainline standards.
