Her skin pigment wasn't even made an issue in the show unless it was relevant to the plot.(Family of Blood ep.) where she was a maid to John Smith(doctor) in the pre WW 1 English boys school. Unlike later companions when the show started going woke ... Example... Bill Pots who had to tell you she was into girls every 5 minutes she was on screen to virtue signal. Yep. Unfortunately he didn't want one. He only ever wanted to do one series, and that was as a favour to Russel T Davies to get the show off the ground, because they'd worked together before. The first series was planned from the off to end in his regeneration.

      Parker8752 He wasn't originally supposed to regenerate at the end of the first series, Eccleston was contracted to do one series, so Russell wrote two endings for the episode: one where The Doctor regenerated (If Eccleston chose to leave) and one where The Doctor would see that Rose was slowly dying after absorbing the time vortex (If Eccleston had stayed.)
      However Christopher Eccleston apparently didn't agree with how the show was being run and how the cast was being treated by the BBC, so he decided to leave while he had the chance.

    After seeing the next few doctors and learning more about the Dalek-Doctor relationship and how terrified they are of him this scene hits even harder. This Doctor is fresh off the Time War having recently regenerated from the doctor of war. In the first episode he didn't even know what he looked like. Then the Daleks show up. After he had killed them all. After he had burnt all of Gallifrey and all the Daleks. But they kept coming back and the Timelords didn't. And this was his first encounter with an entire army of Daleks since the war. All he wanted to do was go to Earth help out, put the Time War behind him. But then the Daleks came to him not the other way around. He wants to run, to hide but they have Rose. However at the same time he doesn't want to kill again even though he hates the Daleks with all his heart. I can not even fathom the PTSD seeing them gave the Doctor. And Eccleston was magnificent in this scene especially.

    One of the great things about the Eccleston season is how The Doctor progressed from the rage and sadness of the Time War, somewhat going through the motions of being The Doctor to actually becoming The Doctor again. The retcon of The War Doctor actually enhances it. He really didn't believe he was worthy of the name, anymore. I'd say the turning point was "The Doctor Dances". He's so desperate for the 100% win he gets there, he really brightens up.

    Two things that for me really need discussing:
    1) Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor. What I love about him is how well he portrays the character just as you'd expect having just come out of the Time War. He thought he'd sacrificed his whole race, his planet, his species to save the Universe. And then the Daleks turn up. Not once, but twice. The one from Dalek was broken. It was dying. But then the Doctor encounters half a million Daleks after he has sacrificed everything. And he's fuming. Right from "oh will you now?" You get that seething undercurrent of pure undiluted rage. And that is what makes the Doctor so good.
    2) The Daleks were really scary in the Eccleston Era. Because of the Doctor's reaction to them and because they kill. In Dalek, a single Dalek manages to kill countless people. In this two-parter, you see many people fall, including some characters you form real attatchments to. Not to mention when strategy says push towards the top first, they go down and massacre innocent people. It's that urge to kill combined with their credibility from the time War and the people they've killed that really makes them chilling. In Moffat, well I can't remember the last time I saw a Moffat Dalek kill someone.

      The ninth doctor's development in this series is just the best. Everything has basically been leading up to this point and the finale, especially after Dalek. The Doctor says no, and it is the turning point for him in the series. He finally starts to overcome the scars that the Time War left him with and shows the Daleks all the defiance that he can possibly give them. No, he's not going to stand back and let them conquer Earth. No, he's not going to yield to them. No, he's not going to let them kill Rose. Honestly, this is one of the two biggest defining moments of Eccleston's Doctor in the two-part finale, the other one being "Coward, any day" during Parting of the Ways.

      @@alexander9703 i would argue that the emperor is different as he is a more intelligent dalek whereas the dalek talking to him was merely a drone. weve seen several instances of daleks fearing the doctor, but to keep it simple ill list all the ones i remember through the rose times.
      1. this one, obviously. they clearly worry about what hes going to do to them, else they would just make good on their threats if they really were serious.
      2. the dalek in 'dalek'. yes he tried to kill the doctor at first but as soon as he saw his weapon wasnt functioning he yelled at him to keep back, why do that if he has no fear of the doctor?
      3. the daleks in 'parting of the ways' - again, the drones, as the emperor was too busy with a god complex - when the doctor first showed up you could see them twitching as they looked at him, almost quivering with fear.
      4. the cult of skaro, the moment they heard the doctor was nearby, recoiled in fear. and as rose put it, '5,000,000 cybermen easy, one doctor? now youre scared'
      did davros try to remove every emotion besides hatred? yes. did he succeed? no. weve seen daleks be prideful, be arrogant, be fearful, be confused, be surprised, be all kinds of emotions. maybe youre right that they dont fear him to the extent that they fear his rage, but im sure you wouldnt deny that they fear the concept of the doctor at least. does that mean they may fear what he does to them and try to avoid pissing him off? i dunno, but as soon as they hear hes involved you can tell they act at least a little cautiously.

    My favourite part of this scene has always been how the Daleks are absolutely convinced they have the Doctor over a barrel and he will have no choice but to submit to their demands, so when he bluntly refuses them, they literally start panicking, because there's some outside context problem they didn't factor in to their plans.
    True, they still manage to inflict apocalyptic levels of damage to the Earth and almost convince the Doctor to destroy every living thing in the solar system to stop them, but this moment shows how, for all their devious plotting, the Daleks simply did not conceive of a scenario in which the Doctor would say no to them. It's brilliant.

    Ah, the Davies era. Back when Doctor Who was enjoyably intense for children, and the Daleks were either cool or creepy.
    Now, with Moffat at the wheel, it's just boring and stupid, and the Daleks are not intimidating at the least.

    • @TheBillSO54
      @TheBillSO54 Před 9 lety +15

      TheDreweMaster Couldn't agree more I think its time for Moffat to leave before he does any more damage. Do get me wrong I did enjoy the Night of the Doctor but series 8 I can't bring myself to watch a repeat of any episodes.

    • @Noobie2k7
      @Noobie2k7 Před 9 lety +8

      Thebillso54 I dunno really, i mean Moffats Doctor Who has actually been more true to earlier series than Davies Doctor was. Doctor Who was allways rather cartoony and cheesy and such. I also think Moffat has come up with all the better original villains. Vasta Narada, Weeping Angels etc. Although the angels did lose their scaryness.
      Also Moffat did give us Amy & Rory. I also still hold to Series 8 being better than Series 7.

    • @TDProductions182
      @TDProductions182 Před 9 lety +5

      Noobie2k7 Nice to see your view. 😀
      It's just that when Moffat was head writer, the series became less scary and more confusing, and it made me feel a bit sick of the Daleks, which I never felt when Davies was in charge.

    • @Noobie2k7
      @Noobie2k7 Před 9 lety +2

      Davies used the Daleks a lot more though. I personaly think Moffat wrote some of the scariest episodes. Don't Blink, The Library episodes, Water on Mars. I also feel Moffat wrote much better series long arching stories. Although the Bad Wolf thing was really cool. Same as the Vote Saxon bits (not sure who wrote that in). Series 5-6 i think were my favourite seasons though. Even if the whole Silence thing kind of stopped a bit dead and weren't really mentioned again untill that whole church thing at the end of S7.

    • @Accidental238
      @Accidental238 Před 9 lety +9

      Ikr, Moffat wrote some decent episodes (Silence in the Library, Blink etc. ) but now he's turning Doctor Who into a cheesy soap opera. It used to be fun to watch now it's almost unbearable. Moffat is the worst show runner this show has seen in 50 years.

    Later Who has its issues, but one addition I do like is the detail that 'Exterminate' is Dalek for emotional expression.
    It means that I can look at the final scene of this episode and see a bunch of Daleks in a panic over the Doctor :)
