Regardless of how good they are in game, I really like the Bladeguard, I have 3 full squads, a captain, a lieutenant, an ancient, and a customized squad of lion's guard
This is the way fellow son of caliban
Got 1 more lionguard to paint myself
I've always loved the bolter aesthetic in space marines.
But if I've ever wanted a melee army, it would be bladegaurd center pieces. They're beautiful
@@TheKiroshias a black Templar player, blade guard and sword brethren are my bread and butter
I plan on running a unit of six plus a lieutenant in a Land Raider Redeemer. I love them myself. I am going to use them in an Inner Circle Task force since I just got the DeathWing Assault box today.
The Bladeguard Captain works especially well with the Honor Vehement enhancement. If you use the finest hour ability in the assault doctrine with the vehement, he can nova 11 strength 7 attacks with devastating wounds. Can probably wipe a squad or at least put down a formidable opponent.
Note to self: stuff this in a land raider.
I run Ragnar with 6 Bladeguard riding in a Land Raider with Gladius rules. Incredible infantry blender, they pair together so well. Even managed to tear down a weakened Angron with the Oath rerolls.
For both, competitive and crusade lore, I always love to run my favorite Blood Angels Captain with his 6 man Bladegusrd honor guard
So many options for the Marines. Perhaps the only upside to Votann... pretty easy to decide which units to use. 😁
there may not be many in the box but the amount of additional stuff on the models do make them look better
Nay they are overdone
Ive always loved Bladeguard, even as a DA Player, having Azrael with them is a great combo.
Also, Primaris Champion being attached to the Bladeguard gives them a small boost for their charge and advance rolls.
Or Judiciar having Fights First to give to them is pretty nice too.
I use a drop pod and place a Judiciar with them. Then at some point I use rapid ingress to drop them in my enemy movement term. If they charge I fight first and if they shoot then other units are getting spared. My next movement fase I can start to hurt the enemy line.
Exactly what I've been doing even dropping them into the enemy deployment turn 1 so they have to deal with them which saves other units for a turn or two, it's especially good if you draw behind enemy lines turn 1😅
One thing I think should be considered for bladeguard transport options is the drop pod. It has perfect transport capacity for full 6 man and a character. Only downside would be the 9 inch charge but with something like a champion to help it would be a little more reliable
The rapid ingress stratagem is what are you looking for.
Deathwatch Judiciar with Thief of Secrets is a beast. One of my personal favourite leaders for them. Very thematic plays as he will bring character skulls and lay them at your feet
They should have given them options for axes, and the sergeant should have had an option for a two handed relic blade. Something to flavor them.
I usually run them as a part of a three unit roll combo. Bladeguard blocking aggressors which are blocking an extra amy type of better shooting unit. Makes a good slow push against most infantry
Just acquired me a Bladeguard Captain. Literally this channel knows exactly what I need to hear ❤
Auspex is like 40k Santa Claus 😅
You mean Bladeguard Ancient?
I love these models, I've been having a lot of fun running 6 + judicior in a drop pod
Thank you for making this video for the community!
Every army I make starts with three of these, solely because I just love how badass they look on the tabletop, regardless of how much a liability they are sometimes 😂
Worth noting that you can have a Captain AND lieutenant attached to the unit if you want maximum damage
it's a shame you can't do a captain, LT and a champion or judiciar. get a full 6 model unit into a transport. (on the flip side with a captain and an LT, the bladeguard make a very juicy Assassination target for 10VP... 3 characters would be even worse)
@@MikeGeneyAssassination only works like that if you're using fixed missions, and it would actually be 8vp (4vp per kill).
If you're using tactical missions (which most people seem to be doing in the tournament meta), it is 5vp for killing one or more characters, and then the objective is completed.
It's a fair point, but I don't think it makes taking two characters in a powerful unit into a liability by any means.
Let's hope we get more character choices for these guys in the codex. I want that apothecary. I made a cool one only to find out he can't go with BG!
They took away apothecaries resurrecting any 3W models in 10th... at least he's cheap now
@@joeymaxey and that's not even fair because they're two wound models with storm shields! Stu Black (if that is his real name) is the one who said the shield is an additional wound. Great idea, Stu, now we can't have apothecaries!
@@joeymaxey Did they, what about termie apothecaries? They can resurrect 4w models (if termies take storm shields)
Wait I can’t put an apothecary with sword bretheren?
@@Slumdog_chillionaire sword brethren can go with anything that can go with Intercessors, so they can go with an Apothecary. Bladeguard cannot.
I have a friend who runs Blood Angels and I have World Eaters, let me tell you, a Squad of 5 bezerkers with a master of Executions is the same as a Squad of 6 Bladeguard with a Lieutenant and a captain, world eaters go in kill them all, pop a strat to fight on death and kill the WE blood for all😊
I love the Bladeguard but there big problem at the moment is a unit of 6 is only 5points less than a unit of 5 terminators so it just makes more sense to take terminators points wise
Trade off I suppose is you have to literally march against a wall of fire to get to your opponents, could lose nearly half a aquad before the blades start swinging, terminators how ever can do insane fire from afar and can still do damage before the squad starts getting hurt
You can carry double the amount in a land raider though since they only count as 1 model, so it’s easier to get more of them up the table.
Excellent, I have just finished painting my kitbashed Wolfblades!
My husband keeps trying to play "Ultramarine heroes" with bladeguard, vitrix and Guilliman
They die as quickly as you'd expect
I have a Dark Angels force that is a combination of Relic Terminators (Cataphractii) and Blade Guard Veterans.
I have a Terminator Chaplin, Blade Guard Captain & Lieutenant, Blade Guard Ancient, a Redemptor Dreadnaught, & a Terminator Command Squad.
Currently working on the Leviathan Librarian, Leviathan SternGuard, and a custom Judiciar made from a Storm cast model.
Judicar Stormcast? Fascinating. You need to give me your formula for that.
Edit: Oh, it's with the Questor Soulsworn.
I've had fun putting these guys in a drop pod. 2 out of 3 games they got their charge off and caused mayhem. Using them with a judiciar let's you stay in combat knowing you will get two round in first. Plus the models are amazing.
I love Bladeguard Veterans! I own 6 for my Black Templars and another 6 for Ultramarines. Bladeguards’ model customization options are among of the best for Space Marines and all of WH40K.
In 9e, 5 Bladeguards + a Chief Apothecary were the anchor of my BT army. I’d load them into an Impulsor, advance them to a midfield objective on Turn 1, and they’d hold it for the rest of the game. Unfortunately, 10e’s rule changes ruined that tactic because an Apothecary can’t lead a Bladeguard squad and 6 Bladeguards plus a leader can’t fit into an Impulsor; I’m forced to only take 3 plus a leader, wasting 2 transport slots, or omit the 6th Bladeguard to take the leader, and waste 33 points. This is why I HATE the rigid unit composition rules in 10e!
It’s BS that Apothecaries can’t lead Bladeguard Vets. GW apparently decided that Apothecaries can’t lead any squad with 3+ wound models because reviving a model with 3 or more wounds is OP’d. (It’s also BS that Apothecaries lost their HEALING ability and can only revive models now, whereas the healer for every other WH40K faction can still HEAL!)
Since an Apothecary can’t lead my Bladeguard squad, I now take a Judiciar instead, which gives the unit Fights First, transforming a tanky unit of objective campers into a fighty unit of character assassins. I know the Blade Ancient boosts the Bladeguards’ Objective Control, letting them camp objectives like in 9e, but the loss of Fight On Death is a major nerf. With sticky objectives in 10e, I now prefer to use Bladeguards offensively to cut through enemy units lead by characters.
yea so far 10th edition is just functionally ... awkward and i'm not enjoying the limitations of group attachments for leaders. they created too narrow of a group that each leader can attach to and it makes very little sense.
@@aunderiskerensky2304Agreed, the only thing I really dislike is having leaders in a squad and not leaders being independent. 10th would be perfect for me with that one change.
Yeah, GW screwed me hard with that update. The apothecary was my warlord. I even named him “Auto Doctarius”… the losing of healing sucks…
@@kylekeenan3485 im not even sure im playing this edition. considering my army is no longer listed ....
They look sick therefore amazing
They’re my favorite generic SM box so I will always love them
Thanks for the video
Love Bladeguards! And veteran squads in general
I read somewhere about comparing them to BT Sword Brethren that if used as Black Templars they would be the Anvil ( tanky to hold objectives) and the Sword Brethren would be the Hammer ( damage dealers) good synergy between them.
Got a bunch of these Guys out of one kit by combining the extra bits with the bodies of a bunch of bladeguard lieutenants i got cheap thanks to the first issue of warhammer imperium (3€ per body if i recall)
I have some Bladeguard I made with spears instead of swords and they fit right in with my Salamanders, a good screening unit to block objective routes and take on nonelite melee units. Obviously, I wouldn't run them into a Greater Daemon and expect them to live but I think they're a very good unit to run side by side with some aggressors and have a serious melee threat with very little units, just 3 aggressors and 5 bladeguard vets can already turn attention to a specific direction.
Probably my favorite use of basic Primaris armor. Just looks knightly - like the black templar initiates.
Just need capes and hooded helmets, then they’re perfect.
There's ALWAYS at least 1 left standing at the end of my games. I like putting a Primaris Lieutenant with them for the Lethal Hits, extra plasma and sword. They are the Greenwing equivalent to my Deathwing Knights (which are hilariously OP when paired with a Terminator Librarian).
I Love bringing these guys in with a drop pod and a Captian/ Lieutenent combo, make your opponent worry about that drop and if you can drop the pod on an objective then all of the sudden you also force the oppenenent to focus fire on that while your other tanks can stay around longer
Run them with judicar they're an absolute blast.
6 Bladeguard: 200 pts.
5 Assault Terminators: 200 pts.
Bladeguard get's 24 S5 AP2 D2 attacks, re-rolling 1's to-hit (or IV-saves).
Terminators gets 25 S5 AP2 D1 attacks, re-rolling all to-wound.
-or-
Terminators gets 15 S8 AP2 D2 attacks with Devastating Wounds. (TH/SS)
Bladeguard have 18 T4 3+/4++ wounds.
Terminators have 15 T5 2+/4++ wounds. (or 20 wounds if taken with TH/SS)
Bladeguard have +1M.
Terminators have Deepstrike (and a largely irrelevant battle-shock rule.)
Assault Terminators feels like the better choice in most scenarios (worse against W2 models, better against everything else) and are way more resilient with +1 Save and +1T.
...And no one picks Assault Terminators because regular Terminators are much better for only +1 ppm.
Bladeguard are quite overpriced. They need to go down to ~28 pts at the most.
You should do more videos on Necrons
Surprised you didn't mention the drop pod as a delivery method for the Bladeguard. I run a full squad with the judiciar and drop them in. Calgar and his guard would actually fill up the empty seats. I should give it a try. Would have to switch out for LT but still...
Recently used a small unit with a judiciar and they did quite a lot of damage against my salamander opponent.
Confused, current codex listing (and the page you showed in the video) for this unit does not show the Relic Shield as a war gear option for models or Sergeant but does show a Lieutenant with Relic shield can join this unit. Is the Relic shield just assumed as an option in the 4+ Inv save?
Kinda like my Bladguard with a Primaris Lt. With the Beacon Angelis for ny Deathwatch. Drop in out of sight on opponets turn for free, then move in and remove a backfield threat. Easier to find a place to drop in than a bigger Termie unit.
I’m running my bladeguard in black templars with a lieutenant who has the sigasmand seal. Lethal and sustained hits on 5s
6 BG plus captain and ancient in a drop pod is fun
Blood Angels, they can be led by Chief Librarian Mephiston, which not only gives the squad Fights First, but in SoS Detachment, you get S6 melee, 30 attacks on the charge, and Mephiston hits in with 7 S10 Force Sword attacks.
But Meph can't lead them, which is a shame
They’re fun with Calgar. Most of the time I play with them in 10th my opponent just steers away
I was considering either bladeguard or aggressors for my primaris wolf guard
I always run 1 squad but usually 2 now. After the space wolf specific units have been butchered they are a really good replacement
Regardless if they aren’t the best unit for black Templars. I’m putting them in because I love the models.
Mine have been doing pretty well for me out of a landraider with a judiciar. It's sons of Sanguinius detachment since I'm a blood angel so +1 attack +1 strength
This is probably the best way to do bladeguard. Give them Lance on the charge while in assault doctrine and you’re good to go
I wonder how the Math stacks them against aggressors, no invul but T6 and a lot more shooting + S8 twin linked attacks in Melee.
Love my blade guards one of my best painted units so even if they’re not Meta I’m not as bothered
I enjoy all the poses and flexibility, but uh- I just really bought them for the extra bits.
I love my Bladeguards, even if now they are so so. How about a Drop pod and Rapid ingress? There's space for 6 of them + a Leader. it's an investment but may work (even if just to redirect other player attention and focus already in the firs turn.
The bladeguard veteran can be very good value; you can make 3 out of 4 bladeguard characters out of them, a Primaris company champion, a Lieutenant and a Captain, the bladeguard ancient is terrible so it doesn’t even matter that you can’t make him too
Yeah they are this and that and their stats are this and that but they look soooooo damn cool
I just played a game where they charged at a unit of Bloodclaws with a Primaris Chaplain attached to them and they dealt 13 damage, the chaplain took down the rest.
It pissed me off when the bladeguard veterans got multipart kit, while Obliterators and Skorpech Destroyers just recycled the monopose big-box sprue...
Good luck getting Honored of the Chapter, it's been sold out since pre-Adepticon
For kit bashing more blade guard would they work better on assault primaris marines or sword brethren
Someday I’ll get crimson paladins to run as these
As you aluded to, if they could go with a bunch of unique chapter captains theyd be top tier for every list. I know i want them with the likes of adrax, or maybe even vulkan he'stan so he can just sit on the objective i want n never move
Auspex and anyone else, Please don't ever complain that a squad has too many options. I have 3 squads and I can make them all look different! Its awesome not a bad tbing.
I’m contemplating getting them new in box or getting them second hand, does anothe one know just how many bits come with them mc sword and shield options and such
You know what would be a great unit for death guard? Bladelard veterans. They're composed of the fattest plague marines and they walk around with plague blades and a tower shield because they're so fat.
Captain+liutenent block of 6 did more for my armor then anything except my block of 10 terminators in a 2000 point game against necrons
These are my favourite models in 40k.
Пока что видится их использование сугубо ради красоты минек. Когда-нибудь обязательно их реализую за Саламандр)
I love the blade guard, their models are so cool.
But, as a casual and dark angel player, I find them very very very weak. In an edition where melee is not so great anymore, they lack of strength in combat, durability because now a Primaris body is very easily taken out of the bord and they shoot with bolt pistol.
So yeah, finally finished to paint my squad and I'm not going to use them any time soon 😥
How well do they do in White Scar?
I'm newbie and just building a 1000pt Army. And got a squad of BladeGuards x3 and squad of x5 assault intercessors. I got a lieutenant and didn't know what to have it lead. But just got Judiciar for free. And Judiciar can lead both squads also. So my question is what squad would benefit the most from each character.
I'd recommend the judiciar with the BG for the strikes first bonus, the s7 relic blade and to maintain the 4+ invul on the combined unit but the lieutenant is a pretty good option too. The lieutenant's lethal hits rule would benefit the assault intercessors more. Play a few small games with both combos, though and see what you prefer
I could see this being worth it if the kit were cheaper or had 2 squads worth in there for the price tag
The long vigil 😢
I didn't care much for bladeguard through most of 9th, I play Dark Angels so the nine I ended up buying all turned into robed sergeants and characters. I don't think I even knew their swords did 2 damage. When the Lion's Guard dropped I grabbed three more and enough Deathwing Knight shields for all of them, and I've really liked them. 6 Bladeguard plus a chappie is traumatic to throw at just about anything under toughness 10.
Melee needs a little boost in 10th across the board
Blade guard look amazing. Sword and Shield in a universe with guns !! Ballers
Only used them in one game so far. Ran with judiciar. They utterly destroyed everything the came in contact with.
How are the 3 marine elite units gonna work now? Sternguard veterans and terminators are back in 5 man squads. Directly at odds with the primaris 3 man elite squads.
Will bladeguard get released in 5 marine squads?
Yes finally
they are gold in Boarding actions
In your space marines tier list you rated them tier 1 top tier. Is this just a reflection of the meta or why are they more or less mediocre now?
Flexibility isn’t the word I’d use. Would be great if the bodies where modular, not monopose but I guess this is the era we’re in.
I’m sure they can also use drop a pod. If so 3 Blade Gaurd with a Judiciar alongside 5 Sterngaurd vets with a librarian makes for a pretty nasty combo in a drop pod.
Can’t see anything that says this isn’t allowed.
Looks legit!
It looks like you missed the Company Champion which is imo the best support model for the unit.
Frustrating it can't go with another leader though.
A good unit, I'm a bit miffed that they don't work well with BT characters. They can't join with Helbrecht, Grimaldus or Marshall, who prefer the Sword Brethen as the close combat unit.
What about space wolves with blackmane as the leader
I have a 6man squad with a Captain and Lieutenant. Run them up in a Land Raider Crusader packed with High Marshal Helbrecht with his 5man squad of Sword Brothen.
The pricing is even worse when you take into consideration the value of the Euro/Pound vs the dollar is nearly the exact same...
I don’t really see how they can ben very strong, theyre a little bit cheapet than terminators but they tank less and have no more damage
I like them, but I like terminators more so I never really take them. Sadly the base version doesn’t really match the Minotaurs aesthetic.
Honestly, I use them as a Command Squad/Bodyguard squad for my Command Edition Starter set (Indomitus) Primaris Captain.
And I play casual only, anyways, so I am more interested in if they look good, and are interesting to use, not if they are "OMG TEH OP, NERF PLZ!" type of unit.
you could load 2 squads into a Land Rider right?
My SW bladeguard unit (3 men) with Ragnar just bounced off of 3 Obliterators.... T7 on them is CRAZY!
Why are you throwing them at T7?
Yeah, my bolters weren't able to hurt the land raider, CRAZY!
Doesn't Ragnar go in with 10 attacks at s8? He should've made progress even without the bg
@@hickorybane9323 it's still a poor match up. With 5 Wounds and a 2+/5++, plus stratagem support, that unit of obliterators is unlikely to die in one combat. Ragnar loses that +2 strength and attacks after the initial charge
@@Dagenham_Swish enemy put them in vital point that I couldn't avoid. Brutalis dreadnought was too far away to clear that path.
How could you forget the Drop Pod?
You are wrong on one thing, the set value, the amounts of bits you get is incredible, it’s one of my favorite set, so many conversion were made out of those kit. Value isn’t necessary calculated in term of money
Do you know off the top of your head how many extra arm/sword/shield/pistol bits are in the box, I’m debating picking up a box of them
@@batshit36 each models make 3 poses with its own bits, so 3 blade guards means 3 extra sword and guns per models. Only 3 shields, 3 head option and 3 helmets.
BGV are decent ; their main issue is they are just a little bit too expensive. They are no longer tanky, and though they are killy, they aren't killy enough for their points.
What about drop pod bladeguard veterans?
Just wondering why he didn’t mention putting them in a drop Pod ? I’ve been. Doing that and it’s been working ok for me. Unless you can’t do that then I’ve been playing it wrong.
Years of tall marines not fitting into them is probably the reason. I'm kinda annoyed that Pod aren't dedicated transports any more so you can only have 3 in a force.
Bladeguard+Calgar+Ancient = 10 man squad with OC2 each
I’m still find it so odd that Mephiston cannot lead BGV.
to be fair i think they should have kept the 2+ from storm shields
