Landscape Photography in Iceland | Using a 6 stop Lee Filter Little Stopper for a Long Exposure

- In this landscape photography vlog, it’s an early start to catch the sunrise. I drive east to a location called Iceberg Lagoon. Where large icebergs that have broken off the glacier slowly float down the lagoon to where it meets the sea.
Not having much experience with shooting icebergs, I explore the shore of the lagoon to find a simple composition made up of layers, ice in the foreground, large icebergs in the mid ground and the mountains providing an breathtaking backdrop. Using the Nikon 70-200mm lens to get in tight to the ice formations, I add a polariser to cut out the glare from the surface of the water and a 6 stop Lee Filter Little Stopper to slow down the shutter, removing the ripples and smoothening out the water.It was so calm and peaceful.
I then walk across to the beach side where the icebergs floated out and are then pushed back to the shore by the waves. I explore interesting the shapes and compositions along the black sand shore. Again I use a 6 stop Lee Filter Little Stopper, on my Nikon 24-70mm, to slow things down and capture a majestic ice seascape.

very very cool. I love how the ice washed up on the beach gives a standard seascape a completely new look. I particularly liked the photo at 10:16 and how the bright lights reflecting though the ice provided such great contrast against the gloomy beach background. Thanks for the share! In a word Andrew, superb... I enjoyed your various approaches on composition. The 9 stich vertical pano @48mm was good & done very close to the 50mm recommended focal length as I understand it, however the single frame cropped pano's IMHO were just superbly done, not to mention less work in post! I really enjoyed this one, even the close-up of the absolutely clear beach ice done at f/4, 1/400... Very well done my friend...

Brilliant video Andrew. The footage you captured was absolutely stunning and really gave a feel for the mood of the place. Your comment about the ducks really made me laugh out loud too, perfect comedy timing. In regards to the images, I think you explained the challenges very well. I really loved the close in shot of the iceberg with the background blur..... a creative shot to compliment the set. The 6 second exposure was my favourite of the day. The ethereal and calm feeling provided by the long exposure really tells the story of that serene place. It also shouldn't be underestimated the amount of skill required to go out day after day on a tour like this and consistently come home with a great set of images. Great work.
Thank you Adam, what stuck me about the place was the constant change of the conditions, the light, the clouds and even the ice moving through the lagoon. It provided lots of opportunities for different types and styles of images. By the end, I was exhausted with having to think so much on my feet and adapt to what was happening! Awesome video Andrew. I think you described the challenges very well. Looking at your footage I was struck by the peaceful nature of the landscape and the abstractness of the shapes and colours. Totally adore Iceland and i will visit there one day, and seeing the blue lagoon full of ice is magical, i can only imagine how gorgeous it really is! Loved all the images specially that first one, the shape of the ice reminded me of some prehistoric seabird of some sort, really interesting shape!

I too had Iceland on my list of locations for a while so when was touring the UK I jumped at the chance to get across as I was so close...it's a long way to come from Australia. That's one thing that fascinated me about the ice, the extraordinary shapes it made, plus the amazing colours. It was a real treat to photograph. Thank you for sharing your comment! :)
