8 Tips for Landscape Photography in Iceland | Best Travel tips for Iceland

- Iceland is a dream destination for most landscape photographers. Together with Andrew Dawes, I share our best tips for improving your landscape photography experience in Iceland, to help you get the most out of your next photography trip.

1. Know where you are going - It's important to maximise your time while you are there. To do that I recommend a map called International Photographer of Iceland. international-photographer.co...
2. Work out what the weather is doing - One of the biggest elements that will impact how successful your trip is will be the weather. I used an app called Vedur for iOS.
3. Build flexibility in your plan - Hire a motorhome so you’re not restricted to check in and check out times that could mess with your landscape photography plans.
4. Optimise your shooting time - During summer the days are long and the nights are short and don’t get completely dark. The best time to shoot with the best light was between 10:30pm and 2:00am during which time included the sunset and sunrise.
5. Consider your Lenses - Think about the sorts of landscapes you want to capture. I took my 17-35mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses. If I could only take 2 lenses, I probably leave the 17-35mm lens home.
6. Avoid crowds - Generally, you’ll encounter fewer people in Iceland during winter, however, the weather is more extreme. During summer when the weather is likely to be more pleasant, many locations can be packed with tourists. Scout your locations out during the day but return at night. Find locations that are off the main ring road.
7. Be prepared for bad weather - During winter the weather in Iceland can get fairly intense, so make sure you’re prepared. Even in summer, it can get very cold, and it important if you are going to spend hours at night shooting that you are warm dry and comfortable, so sure you have gloves, beanies and plenty of layers.
8. Get into the high country with a 4WD - While there are lots of locations in easy reach of the main ring road around Iceland, they will be popular. To make the most of your visit, consider getting access to a 4WD (even for part of your time there) so you can access some of the spectacular and unique locations the high country has to offer.

I'm Michael, the designer of the Map of Iceland for Photographers.
I watched your video entirely (even to the nice making-of at the end) and found it so useful for anyone planning a trip to Iceland, and a real pleasure to watch thanks to this special Australia / Thailand split screen (great idea!).
I can't thank you enough for talking about my map, I put so much effort making it, I'm glad that travellers and photographers still use printed maps even though they use Google map (I think they are complementary).
I see that you used my map intensively, I'd like to remind if you don't mind that my map is printed on a very special paper that makes it 100% WATERPROOF & TEARPROOF so it can go through heavy rain and Iceland wind, it will never let you down.
If you plan a trip to Fantastic Faroe Islands (that I definitely recommend to combine with Iceland, cheap quick flight ticket between the two), I'll be glad to provide you with my FAROE ISLANDS TRAVEL PACK.

Hi Michael, first off thanks so much mate for designing such an awesome map! I used the Map of Iceland for Photographers in my planning and preparation for the trip and also while I was over there. Many of the images I walked away with was because of the information you had on the map.I recommend it to anyone who is thinking about heading over to Iceland.
When I get back to Iceland, I'll seriously consider visiting The Faroe Island while I'm there, so I might take you up on your kind offer.

Here's the reason I bought it!
Took my first trip to Iceland at the end of September last year and it was amazing. The vistas and landscapes made you feel like you were in another world. It was also the most challenging week of photography that I have ever experienced....50 mph winds gusts, rain, sleet, snow and yes.....a few sunny days. I would also suggest you leave your itinerary with the Safe Travel Iceland website in case of emergency. We started driving one day in beautiful weather and an hour later we found ourselves almost stranded in the middle of blizzard conditions in a remote mountain area. Your tips on being prepared for anything were spot on. We traveled the entire Ring Road and all the major sights were crowded with tourists. Great suggestion to shoot at night during summer season. We had the Map of Iceland for Photographers and found it to be invaluable. Can't wait to return!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, you make some excellent points here. Safety is essential particularly in such extreme conditions and in a location that's unfamiliar. When do you plan on getting back there?

Thanks Mike, glad you thought this was useful, I was a little hesitate at first with the night shooting approach but it worked out well. My only suggestion would be to use this approach if your on your own or with other photographers, this would be much harder if travelling with family that aren't into landscape photography. :)
Andrew! There is literally tears running down my face right now watching those bloopers and the baked beans scene at the end. What a champion! On a more serious note they are some excellent tips and to be able to give the autumn/winter perspective was an honour and pleasure mate. We will have to go back to be able to give some more tips next year!

Great info for planning a phototrip to Iceland, must say though that the mention of snack, being comfortable and weather were quite funny and brought a big smile on my face. , …but off course you are being used to a completely different climate.

Cheers Brian, it was a great process to go through, as content creators we are always looking for new ways to create new content with a bit of a twist. We were happy with the way the video turned out, and demonstrates that you don't have to be in the same location to collaborate, as you know being in Perth options to meet up and collab with other landscape youtubers are limited.

Great vlogs guys and some informative tips. Have visited Iceland twice. It’s a wonderful country to visit even if your not a photographer which I wasn’t on my first visit. Would recommend this country to anybody and it’s still the best place I’ve ever visited. Will definitely be visiting again. 🇮🇸 📸

Marvelous. Baked beans! Great tips provided by A2 (Andrew & Andrew) which are applicable to any road trip near or far. I particularly liked the lens and tourist discussion. I often find taking that "just in case" lens only to find I could have left it behind. Better planning can certainly help in this regard. Secondly, I also find that most tourists are absent early in the AM. I'm usually leaving a location when most arrive so good tip. Off to a short seaside trip this weekend so your video is timely. Thanks to you both!
It's hard to plan what lenses to take when you don't really know what you will see. I was in Greenhills, Western Australia a few weeks ago. I took a stack of lenses, as far as I can remember, I only used a kit lens on my 80D, TS-E 24 and 180mm macro lens on my 5Ds. I shot most of my landscapes with the macro lens.

Amazing place - my tip would be to head up into the Westfjords if you want to escape the crowds and photograph some incredible scenery :)

Just wondering how did you recharge camera batteries while travelling around in 4WD and campervans?
Unless you use cameras like Sony that charge via usb.
Charging phones & tablets I imagine would be easy thru the usb ports in the vehicles.
Also did you back up images to the Cloud or have laptops or some kind of portable drives?
All good I found your other video that goes more into detail about the gear for the trip.
The autumn-winter Andy Dawes mentions (around min 10) to get the longer sun-rise/set is it Oct-Feb? Given that you are in the Souther hemisphere it is not always clear if you refer to your home or destination season. And even in the destination it transpired towards the end of the video that you were talking about October. So pls use months instead. In an earlier (6:39) mention Andy Marr (put an asterisk to a similar reference to clarify).
Hi Dimitris, it a good point you make here, we intended to refer to time periods in terms of destination seasons however when I made the mistake I thought process was...when I was over there I was cold, therefore it must have been winter over there...in fact it was summer. You are right, using months would have been better. Regardless, the slow sunsets and sunrises occur at the extremes of the seasons, middle of winter and middle of summer, as the sun is moving at an acute angle to the horizon.
