  • How To Diagnose Air in The Fuel System of a 7.3
In this video I show a method to diagnose a fuel system on a older 7.3 motor. At first I thought my fuel pump was bad but through running tests I found out it wasn't my fuel pump but in fact several possibilities that the best remedy was to delete my whole fuel system and stream line the system to one large tank.
My original fuel problems started when the fuel filter light came on and my motor started surging and bogging down. Through running some tests i figured out that the fuel filter light can come on due to either excess fuel pressure or if the injection pump pulls a vacuum inside the fuel system. Since my fuel pressure wasn't too high that means my fuel system has a restriction or air is getting into the fuel system. So i started running some tests to help figure out my problem with my fuel system and my fuel pump.
    The possible problems could be:
    1) fuel tank pickup is broken inside the tank(possibility because if you run the front tank below a half of a tank it starts sucking air)
2)a clog or fuel restriction caused by a failed section of fuel line(which I found)
3)a failed/failing fuel selector valve(a possibility because the selector valve doesn't work to select the rear tank and one works for the front tank)
So this can help with diagnosing air in fuel systems, and help with trying to diagnose why the fuel filter light kept coming on, and help you on how to tell if your fuel problem is before your lift pump or after it.
All of these thing together makes it to where id would be safer to replace the whole system but with as costly as that would be it would be batter and safer bet to replace the tanks with a larger fuel supply tank and eliminate any possibility of problems from my old system.
One of the biggest issued the 7.3idi suffers from is air in fuel and air intrusion into fuel systems. The syompoms of a 7.3 air in fuel symptoms include the trucks rps bogging down and then surging. or could seem like a skip in the motor, regardless a 7.3 air in fuel system problem is a major issue and should be dealt with immediately!

In this video I show how to do a test to determine if your fuel filter light is a result from your fuel lines for from a weak fuel pump. if the low fuel pressure and volume stay the same or gets worse rasults it is from your fuel pump, but if the results improve it is due a fuel restriction or air intrusion. if you like this video and would like to see more videos like please like, comment, subscribe, and click that little bell icon to be notified of my future videos. my 7.3 has a slight engine skip and I had a very bad sputter under hard acceleration today when I got up around 70.. I just replaced injectors and the harness 2 days ago and injectors have been put through 100 miles.. I replaced IPC today thinking that was it. I’m am going to do the CPS again next. Did your 7.3L sound like a dry tap on one cylinder?

Currently have this problem in my 91 7.3l
Had the worst time with air intrusion in it.
Everything from the return lines to lift pump was sucking air (4th lift pump)
Got all that worked out and there is still air bubbles coming from before the filter. After a brand new lift pump, and 3 sets of return lines that are now dry.
Seriously considering ripping all the fuel system out and building it with better parts. Electric fuel pump etc etc

Clean the 2 filters in your fuel sending unit and clean the tanks

That was no the issue it was sucking air, and had plastic bits sucked up into the fuel lines from parts of the fuel sending unit. I ended up replacing the whole fuel tank and ran a new fuel line. That worked for a while until my fuel pump ended up starting to leak into the block. So I’m waiting to get around to swapping it over to a electric pump system
